Actually, I much prefer the live version on In Concert over the studio version.

I think WIBN really showcases everything that makes the Beach Boys great: beautiful harmonies, upbeat rhythm, sad lyrics. It's like every Beach Boys song rolled into one.

That's true. It combines the energy of early BB hits like I Get Around, Surfin' USA and Fun Fun Fun with the sophisticated and rich brilliance of Pet Sounds. If they ever made one song that's representative of what they were all about musically, than WIBN is probably it. Maybe even more so than GV.

This ^ is one of the reasons PET SOUNDS is revered to the extent it is — like Elvis Costello said in the ENDLESS HARMONY doc, the PS music was creative, complex, sophisticated, and interesting, but hadn't become too weird and spooky yet (SMILE).

DYLW is definitely a possibility, as is GOK, GV, and a host of others...WIBN is awesome but would not be the only song to listen to...the subject matter would get boring. Jury's still out...

Very tough call.  If someone put a gun to my head and told me to pick my favorite Beach Boys song, I'd probably say Surf's Up, but it's the kind of track that I don't listen to as much as some of the others--I sometimes save it for special occasions.  If I could only listen to one?  The ten minute version of H&V!  Or else maybe I Know There's An Answer.  Or This Whole World.  Aw heck, it's impossible to choose...

I don't think I could do this easily for any of my top 5 bands (except maybe Black Sabbath), but at a push, today, I would probably say "You Still Believe in Me" tomorrow will be different though I'm sure.

Live version of "Sloop John B" from In Concert.

A close second would be "At My Window".

Hi All,

It's either God Only Knows (Mono) or God Only Knows (Stereo) or God Only Knows (Backing Track) or God Only Knows (Brian lead) or God Only Knows (Lounge Mix) or God Only Knows (Acapella ending) or God Only Knows (Sung by Carl when I first saw the BBs live) or God Only Knows (sung by Brian when I first saw him live) or God Only Knows (BW last night 1st RFH tour)

Only balance I think it's God Only Knows any old how!

Cheers

don't forget the Lei'd In Hawaii version... quite lovely.

Ahhh...LHRW. The most underrated BB song? Perhaps. Is there a stereo version of LHRW out there?

GOK Lei'd (Heider)? One could argue it is just as moving if not more than the original. Imagine Smiley Smile had GV, GOK (rehearsals), TTGA (Demo)...Not to mention the Water Chant and Let the Wind Blow...

I think Hushabye might be a contender for the one song for the rest of my life. I think I sing it more than any other BB song.

...or the the beginning of California Girls. DANG! This is too hard...

God Only Knows or Surf's Up. Both are sublime, and that's an understatement.

Some people think that WIBN is sad? To me, it's the opposite of sad- the epitome of youthful optimism, love, & hope. Strange how art can be interpreted so differently. Now- Caroline No- that's sad. I wonder if some people actually think that's a happy song.
