I remember when this came out as a single in the USA, and I thought whatthe? I still do. Does anyone know why this came out as a solo single? I wonder what the politics of it were.

Um, why didn't "Girl Don't Tell Me," for example, come out as a Carl Wilson single? Or Blue Christmas" for Brian? There has to be more to it.

Does anyone know why this came out as a solo single?

According to one interview, simply because he wanted it to. He asked Capitol to release it under his name because he thought it might be a hit.

"Summer Means New Love" was on the B-side, which may indicate that it was an attempt to rebrand Brian as a composer rather than purely a Beach Boy. Maybe he was considering his options?

I remember Brian saying he just wanted to promote his name.
A #32 (iirc) hit isn't too bad for a first single but I wonder if there woud've been any bigger chart succes if it was released under the Beach Boys' name

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.
