Am I the only person who has listened to In The Key of Disney more than SMiLE over the past couple of weeks? Understandably the Disney album has been overshadowed by the release of SMiLE but there seems to have been very little written here about it. I love it and only wish the bonus tracks had been included as standard to extend the running time.

I've listened to the Disney album quite a lot the last couple of weeks. Somehow it goes really well with Smile because in many ways it's the exact opposite of it. After a few hours of brilliant Smile madness, In the Key of Disney is the perfect mellow antidote to chill out with.

I'm going to guess that since "smile" has been boot legged and most people have heard over the years and that because the Disney c.d. is new it's going to be more fresh to a lot of people ears

When I saw the title of the tread, i immediatly though of this: what if SMiLE was released as a animation movie? A la Fantasia?

I disagree, unless you mean Brian's recordings...theres something about the majesty of all that is Disney that lies in perfectly with SMiLE. The idea of Americana for example is exactly something Walt wanted to portray with Main Street USA in his parks, it was something he longed for. I remember having moments of clarity when walking down the park and having parts of SMiLE just playing in the back of my mind...and it made sense.

When I listen to the Disney songs, I think of everything collectively...and it makes sense.

For me it goes more with BWPS because of the older Brian vocals and "happier" vibe vs. the young Brian vocals and slightly spooky/ominous vibe of TSS.

Totally agree.  In many ways the Americana section of SMiLE was like Brian's own musical version of Disneyland, riffing off of themes explored in Frontierland and Main Street.

You could even compare the way Disney composed the soundtracks to their animatronic rides at the time to Brian's modular style; both were recorded in small, diverse sections with a central musical theme or idea pinning them together.  I find a lot of similarities between something like Yo Ho! Yo Ho! (A Pirate's Life For Me) and Heroes And Villains for instance.

Yeah, that's kind of where I am.  I've heard every damn thing on the Smile album a thousand times.  I mean it's cool and all, and I'm glad it's out, and there was a few new things, but all in al I've heard hundreds of hours of "Heroes and Villians" in my life.  It's a great song.  I'm kind of over it, lol.

The Disney album, however, many of those songs I've never heard period.  Others I've always loved, and like Brian's take on them.  Great album, I've been listening to it a lot.  I'm going to have to go download a bunch of Disney movies, now.  I've GOT to see "Snow White", "Dumbo", and "Pocohontas" again now that this album has grown on me so much.

I've listened to it far more than SMiLE.

ITKOD is such a friggin' great album in my opinion. It's a shame that SMiLE has overshadowed it - and I've been bummed that very little has been said about it since its official release. But I've been enjoying it, and that's all that matters Cheesy

I downloaded the Disney album and listened to one or two songs. Not very interesting imo. Maybe I'll give it a complete listen in a year or so, when I'm done mixing my own Smile, and done listening to it.

I've listened to Disney more, too. It's less demanding. It fits the way I live better, you could say.

Well, the Disney album is mellow, unambitious, uncomplicated, goes down smoothly, entertainment rather than art, it just sounds like it works without even trying all that hard. So in those ways it's the exact opposite of Smile. I see your point though.

I listened to Feel the love tonight and it sounded like BW singing over a karaoke. I'll never listen to that again.

Have to agree. I'm not the Gershwin album's biggest fan but at least it didn't sound like karaoke.

(I'll admit that some of the vocal performances do sound good, however, such as "Baby Mine".)

Passing judgment on this album without even listening to it all the way through is foolish.

This might not be the time for some people to give the record a chance, but it is a record produced and arranged by Brian Wilson, featuring some excellent lead vocals. It really is worth your while, regardless of its modesty.
