OK, this is what I need - something that's free, gives reasonable quality and above all is so simple a fern could operate it.

Any suggestions ?

You talking about a youtube music ripper?

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Yeah, you need to be more specific about what you're trying to do.  There are different ways to save the embedded stream on youtube, facebook, or whatever...  If there isn't a specific ripper for the type of stream you're talking about, you could always just record it with Audacity.

Hi Mr Doe,

Have a read about these 2 options - http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/how-to-capture-save-record-or-download-streaming-audio-for-free/

Option 1 lives in your browser, so you just click a button when you want to record.

Option 2 is a stand alone program that you have to open in a seperate window.

In each case there is a minor bit of techo stuff required, I'm sure there will be an inexhaustible line of people willing to help you out.

Cheers - A
