EMI, the record label that signed the Beatles, is likely to be broken up this week and sold to a Russian-born billionaire. The sale will mark the end of an era for UK music. EMI is the last major domestic music label and its record of signing homegrown talent has made it the unofficial home of British pop.

The sale to Len Blavatnik and his company "Access Industries" fell through when a price couldn't be agreed on. The latest buyer for EMI's recorded music division(subject to regulatory approval) is Universal Music.

In my youth Afro I lived near the EMI "factory" in Wellington, New Zealand. My Dad knew some of the guys that pressed records there.
