part of Murry's original lyrics:
why don't you mow the lawn
it's getting reallllly long
why risk a beating when you want to be free
mike love just passed us by
i'll make him start to cry
and now my foot is in love's ass
that very same ass, that passed us by
and that is why....
I WILL BEAT YOUR ASS
TILL ITS RED AND HARMED
AND I CAN DO WHAT I WANNA DO
I'LL BEAT YOUR ASS TILL MY EMPTY LIFE
AND WORLD IS THROUGH
While unbeknownst to many fans of the Beach Boys, the words that Ghost has posted above are in fact part of Murry Wilson's original lyrics for Break Away, which was initially titled Beat Your Ass. Brian, at Murry's request, dutifully wrote the music for Beat Your Ass, and a recording session was scheduled for this last US Capitol single. However, as has so often been the case in Beach Boys history, major quibbling developed within the group when Mike Love insisted that Dennis Wilson's name be substituted for his in the lyrics. While other band members pointed out to Love that his simple two syllable name sounded better lyrically than Dennis Wilson's four syllable name, Mike could not be swayed and thus Bruce Johnston, using the pseudonym Reggie Dunbar, was asked to write new lyrics to the retitled Break Away.
The band's rejection of Murry's lyrics caused him to go into a mental tailspin. Needing cash but deprived of songwriting royalties for Beat Your Ass, Murry angrily sold Sea of Tunes to A&M within days of the recording of Break Away.
