Which session does this song come from?  Is it part of the Andy Paley sessions or is it from the aborted Don Was sessions?

IIRC Soul Searchin' that does the rounds is the Paley Session with Carl's vocals flown in from the Was sessions?

I ask because the backing for You're Still a Mystery don't sound like the rest of the Paley Sessions.  It's more minimalist like the Was produced I Just Wasn't Made For These Times album.  I can hear Mike and Bruce on this track, is Al there in the backing harmonies too?

EDIT: I have checked AGD's excellent site but couldn't find an answer.

It's the Beach Boys. Believe it is actually a Don Was track, although not 100 percent. Was written by Brian and Andy, however.

Later remade during the Imagination sessions, and remade a third time for GIOMH. Neither of those versions circulate, I believe.

Long story short, Carl was putting up a fuss...was probably bogged down by the cancer...BBs said Sean O`Hagen should be involved, Brian wasn`t too hot on that...probably some other complications involving Paley and/or Was...Brian said screw it and went along with the Stars and Stripes idea instead.

I think it was done with Paley, recut with Was, but the version we all know and love has instrumentaation from Paley sessions and vocals from Was sessions.

I know that's true for Soul Searchin', but for some reason I doubt it for this track. As stated earlier, it just sounds different from the other Paley backing tracks. Too clean.

I'm interested in knowing what the backing vocals in the choruses are.

I hear "tell me your secrets, _________", "tell 'em to me straight now, _________", "give a little hint now, _________" "gotta find the key now". I can't tell what the parts in red are.

To my ears it's:

I thought you were my friend
But help me through this please
Help me find the key

... and I think it's "give a little hand now"

No no no, the backing vocals. Not the lead. There's something behind "I thought you were my friend", "help me through this please" and "help me find the key".

I hope it's going to pop up in an official context sometime soon, but there's no need to re-record it as far as I'm concerned.

Great track. BTW, I can also hear Al on the track, too...but I always felt that if the Beach Boys had just set aside their prickiness and let Brian call the shots like before, YSAM would be a perfect example of the quality and artistic maturity they COULD have put out instead of that dreadful Bummer In Paradise...

Oh....and forget the backing vocals...I swear I hear Brian sing something about "moo juice" near the end of the song.
