With the SMiLE news this seems pretty unimportant but it's always cool seeing the guys getting a shout out

Even if it is from Taylor Swift  LOL

I think the cover is pretty unremarkable but it's a nice gesture all the same.

Her banter was kind of corny. At first I thought the girls yelling "I love you Taylor" were shouting for Sail On Sailor...but I'm sure that 90% of the kids in that audience wouldn't know real music if it smacked them in the face. If only she'd drop the sweet and innocent act, leave the C&W world behind, and do some non-corporate-non-manufactured-and-aimed-at-unsuspecting-teenagers-genuine rock and roll.

What's cool is where the crowd of screaming fans join in a clearly audible singalong -- that says an awful lot about the power of the music. I'm thinking GOK has always been an oldie for that audience, and very few of them (if any) were around to see Carl Wilson sing it live. And yet, they know the song.

"God Only Knows" is going to be around far longer than any of the people who originally sang or played it.

If Taylor Swift sings it, that exposes it to her fans.  Even if it leads just one of those tweens to Pet Sounds, then it's all good.  FWIW, I got my first copy of Pet Sounds when I was a tweenie girl, in 1986.

Also, I'd rather see Taylor Swift--who writes songs and plays instruments and can actually carry a tune--perform GOK than some overprocessed, overblown pop tart.

As for the screaming in the video clip...how is that screaming any different than what we saw for, say, the Beach Boys in the T.A.M.I. Show?  It's just the way it is.

Yeah, well said.

It was even worse for The Beach Boys

It says a lot about your fans when they love you so much they would rather scream their lungs out than actually listen to what you are singing.

The screaming itself isn`t a problem. I`d just rather see tweens screaming for Neutral Milk Hotel or the Jesus and Mary Chain. But I doubt that will happen anytime soon.

Pretty much exactly how I feel - nothing mindblowing about it, but it's nice to see that she knows and respects the song enough to do it in concert and expose her fans to it (most of whom would never hear it otherwise).  Music like that just doesn't get made anymore, and I admire her for helping to preserve it and pass it on to the next generation.

I get your point about the screaming too, but that's a lot of the reason I don't like live music, especially when it's an artist I like.  I'm going there to listen to that artist perform, not a bunch of morons (who care more about the personality than the music) scream.  If you're such a "fan," you'd actually want to hear the person sing!

i agree it's very nice of her to do it.  she's obviously a fan, and it's cool to hear the music still getting played by anyone.  anyone who's against this is pathetic.

Nah.

A cover is never an insult to the original artist, no matter how well or badly done.

What was your experience of Pet Sounds like as a young girl?

I was practically born a Beach Boys fan.  I first heard GOK when I was 10 and thought that it was the most beautiful song in the world.  Nearly 30 years later, I still think so.
Even though I liked plenty of the music of the times, I have always been a fan of 60s music, history, and pop culture.  For Christmas in 1986, I asked for PS and Sgt. Pepper.

I absolutely loved PS from the first time I heard it.  Even though I was only 15, a lot on that album spoke to me, in particular IJWMFTT.  I had a lot going for me in school...honor student, part of the in-crowd, involved in activities, plenty of friends, almost always had a boyfriend.  Yet inside, I never felt secure in my position.  Even though I always had people around me, there were times that I felt alone in what i believed.  So that song was a comfort and helped me know that it's okay to feel insecure even when things seem to be going great.
Really, I found something to relate to in every song in PS, which I think is the whole purpose of that album.  It has persevered because it's universal.  No matter who you are, you're going to feel all kinds of emotions growing up: joy, pain, insecurity, longing, confusion, etc.

Forget about that top 40 crap...we do have Panda Bear, Best Coast, Beach House, Wavves, the Vivian Girls, the Drums, Surfer Blood, Dirty Projectors, Camera Obscura, the Postmarks, etc.
