In many ways, I'm surprised that the whole "Smile" project was never simply titled "Heroes & Villains" and released as a concept record. Most of the songs deal with the white man coming to America and bringing good and bad with them. Brian could have had the 3 or 4 versions of 'Heroes & Villains' segued in between other songs to return to that motif. And besides being released prior to Sgt. Pepper's and containing better music than that album (in my opinion) it would have overshadowed 'Pepper' for the non-existent concept album that really was.  'Heroes & Villains' - the album - would have been an actual story - - a true concept and re-telling of the settling of America; 'Pepper' isn't a concept at all - except that the first two songs link together.

(Is there anything out there that collects all the various Heroes & Villains song fragments onto one cd? Please PM me. I have the 'Cantina' and 'Bicycle Rider' versions, but I'm sure there is more. I love this song and want to try and find everything I can that exists of every session and overdub, etc.)

Anyone else agree with my idea? "Heroes & Villains", the ALBUM may have been an even more powerful, cohesive statement than the 'Smile' idea.

In another universe, Heroes And Villains is a 1966 EP, and SMiLE is a 1967 follow-up comedy album with some nonsensical "element" music in between jokes.

Everyone remembers where they were when they first saw this ad in Billboard Magazine:

I've always thought Smile would have made a great double album.

One of the discs having a 15-minute Good Vibrations 'suite' backed by a 15-minute H&V 'suite'. That way Brian gets to spend months recording his gorgeous snippets AND use them all.

I'll probably add Murry a few flights up, glaring at Brian!   Grin
