I do not claim to be a smart person, nor a person of much education or intelligence. But sometimes I get the overwhelming sense that I am lost amidst a generation of people who are confined to absolute stupidity. I consider myself a part of this growing mass of ignorance and love for distracting hobbies. When I hear children scoffing at the enjoyable task of reading aloud in class I find myself lost for words. How can people be so enthralled in this other culture that they detest reading and sparking the imagination? I find us all to be nothing greater than a most simple minded ape, marching his way through his habitat while thumping on his chest for a rythmic companion. We seem to be a doomed generation of people. We're lost in the commercialization of anything enjoyable. Pop music can never progress because it is already so defined in our minds that any deviation feels forced or "wrong". Ever listen to the radio and automatically know the next word or musical phrase? That's because at birth our brains are already developed enough to interpret the simplicity of that sort of song's structure. I feel like I am submitting to this lifestyle of people and barely even minding. I try to explore my soul and really FEEL who I am as a human. What seperates me from other animal as a being capable of appreciating art and music. But art is vastly underappreciated by my generation. Show them a truly BEAUTIFUL painting and they'll merely glance with passing interest. Nothing moves anybody anymore. Perhaps the O.C does, or what, Skating With Celebrities? I'm finding that the Beach Boys are even starting to bore me. Oh dear.

Except, I don't think I can ever get tired of the Beach Boys. Luckily theres waves of good music, although not popular, its still good. Check out Sufjan Stevens' 'Illinos EP' and you'll see what Im talkin about. There's still hope!

Seriously though, why aren't people looking into themselves more?

I've tried to initiate conversations with close friends about "deep" things which they SHOULD be thinking about. Matters of the heart and soul which rests their whole life and being. At best the response will be a,  Afro or more likely a  Shocked. It's the most ridiculous thing i've ever come across in my life. Why are people no longer thinking? We're thinking no more than a dog does while he's laying his bone down ready to chew. We should be smack down in the middle of our soul, prodding the walls, asking "What's up with this then?". A distance is created between myself and many of the people I know. In that group I also place many teachers, parental figures, and all round general adults of over 60 years. These people have had all the time in the world to think, yet they haven't thought more than their choice of outfit for the day. It makes me want to jump off of a bridge.

Trust me. It beats driving behind a pick-up truck with a pair of chrome nuts hanging off the bumper...in 5 below temperatures.

I feel for those people.

They're dumbing down in shocking numbers.

Sad thing is, i'm one of them too. Except i'm on the outskirts of it. Maybe my children will too escape the inane life.

It changes if you go to college and surround yourself with the right people. High school/college were night/day for me.

H&V, you just have to realize not to care.

Sure, everyone is becoming uncultured simpletons, but this has been in motion for so long there's nothing we can do to stop it except react individually. If you, you who has identified there is a problem, rise above the problem yourself, that's more progress than mankind can hope for.

Seriously though, why aren't people looking into themselves more?

One, that would require discipline that a lifetime of mental laziness no longer allows.

Two, they are afraid of what they will find.

Entertainment and culture eventually will leave everyone empty and empty-handed.  The only fulfilling venture is to obey the commandments given to us, the greatest being loving one another and putting others first.  Only be seeking to make someone else happy will you find your own happiness.

I don't know that there's a way to recapture the thrill of discovery that the BBs have given me throughout the years.  New songs.  Unreleased gems.  Walking into a record store each week and finding a new release on CD, the best being Pacific Ocean Blue.  Part of that is the very medium we are using now.  It's hard to be surprised when so many people are telling me what's about to happen.

Well, that does beg a rather obvious question...

Why use this medium if it spoils the surprise?  Because at this point I'd rather be able to know and discuss history and recent events than be surprised by them.  Plus, I believe at this point in BB history, there are few surprises left to discover.

I think that's about right.  It's not so much that people are stupider or uncapable of profundity, but they are unwilling to do the "soul-searching" and kind of deep thought you descibe.  And I can't say I blame people.  Deep thought isn't terribly fun.  They should be afraid of what they find, chances are it'll be something very worthy of being terrified of.

Why our suicide rate in the Midwest isn't 100% I'll never know.  As much fun as 7-8 month winters on a completely flat, brown piece of land is...

As far as I am concerned the BB's are done...they were done in 1974...after Blonde and Ricky were let go..they stopped being a musical force going forward, they soon looked back at the golden years as their banner...(Endless Summer...it doesn't even have GV on it FODA!!!)
The Love You gasp was the last breath of their creative force and Kokomo was pure commercialism...sure I like it but its not the same...

As far as our Western society and lack of meaningful discussion...we are so precoccupied with getting to work, going home exhausted, emailing, web surfing, doing all the necessary things that we have to do to stay afloat financially and socially...we are on a treadmill and we have to take time to get off and just stop and think...meditation, prayer, these are the things that we dont like to do cuz it feels unnnatural or weird to stop the bus from rolling down the highway of life and take stock of who and what we are....and to bow before a diety and say, you are greater than I....
