The title of this you tube video is ,God Only Knows-Brian sings lead however I'm pretty sure its Carl's voice not Brian. Can anyone on here clear this up? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC_UILNwWrc

It's definitely Carl. It's an early vocal take.
I believe the first instance of attributing this take to Brian was first made by David Leaf when preparing the GV Box Set and the error has been repeated in various official releases since then.

'zit possible it's one Carl vocal, one Brian vocal? Like as part of a rough mix? Honestly, it doesn't sound much like either of them, although occasionally a bit like one or the other in spots.
Also, welcome to the Pet Sounds box set imo.

I thought for a very long time it was Carl singing over the top of a rough Brian demo. Or Carl trying to do Brian!!

I just had another listen and does sound like Carl and Brian sharing the lead. Maybe it was some kind of experiment they were doing at the time. I always wondered what a Carl/Brian shared lead vocal would sound like. I think we just started another urban legend!

Carl sounds as if he is trying to be more "punchy" with the vocal.

Carl on one track in backround Brian on the lead track. Brian wanted a more straight sound on this song, to this day he sings it very straight.

When I first heard the track -- when Steve Dahl and Garry Meier played it on the radio -- my first thought was that it was Brian. Thought that way for a long time, but yeah, no question about it: it's Carl. Just didn't sing that take as gently.
BTW, smokey -- how exactly do you mean "straight"?? And...in both Toronto and St. Charles this year, he sang "God Only Knows" as if he were trying to channel Carl; he kind of over-attempted to sing it softly...

He has expressed in interviews that he wanted carl to sing it straight, no vibrato or whisper or stuff just straight singing. There are two voices on this recording Brian and Carl thats why you hear Carl in this, he is there but lower, second verse only Carl in begining then Brian fades in and they both finish it. I know he started to sing it softer, but up until now in the new recording and most of the live show he has sung it hard and straight.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I just got the Pet Sounds Sessions and was wondering if there is any new information available on this version of GOK from Disc 3. Was it ever confirmed whether or not there is any Brian singing lead on this (and if so, is it a blend of him and Carl/who sings what?). Just curious as to whether there's any consensus on this.

I don't know if it was ever officially 'declared' - but yes, it is certain there's no Brian lead on that take.

Definitely sounds like Brian to me. Certainly sounds different from Carl if you compare it to the final version.

http://swdstudyvideos.com~swd Very nice lesson and listen. Thank you! I can't get the youtube clip under discussion but is it the same as SWD's from the 27min mark? If so it was Brian.

I've got to go with Desper on this one... you know, since he was friends with both men and was in charge or recording their voices... and seems to know more than all of us combined about their voices. So yeah. Desper pretty much wins this argument.

Desper can make mistakes. In his Break Away study video he says it's Carl when it's Brian in the accapella lead. And I don't think he was there when the GOK lead was recorded

I don't know... listening to the single track accapella Brian seems to sound just like that again in the coda. More than Carl has ever sounded http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd9446M-ASc

The audio in that video is just Carl, no Brian in that at all.

The audio in that video is just Carl, no Brian in that at all. you're right and i'm embarrased. I've been listening to GOK for 10 years and never noticed the whole stereo coda lead is different. But Mark Linnet also misled me with his liner notes, where he says the "beginning" of Brian's vocal is missing
