OK, I need a distraction from all this SMiLE inactivity. Let's make a playlist/mix CD of BB/Brian Wilson homages. A few to start us off:

1. Pale and Precious (Dukes of Stratosphear)
2. My World Fell Down (Sagittarius)
3. At My Most Beautiful (R.E.M.)
4. Hawaiian Smile (High Llamas)
5. Pancreas (Weird Al)
6. She Is So Beautiful (Paul McCartney)

Let's hear some more!

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!   That was a quick thread!

Now what.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

What Paul song do you speak of on there? I haven't heard of it.
When I think Paul and BB homages, I think Backseat of my Car.

"She Is So Beautiful" was a bonus track on the Japanese version of Paul's Chaos & Creation CD. It's very Pet Sounds/"Caroline No" -- especially the instrumental break at 1:55:

Nobody has done a better BB homage than a group of Nashville studio cats under the name Vinyl Kings. Their first album, "A Little Trip," is an incredible Beatles replica with amazingly skilled instrumental and vocal accomplishments. On their second album, "Time Machine," they branched out a bit; there's still a lot of Beatles influence, but they also did a track (Pray for Peace) which sounds just like a lost Marvin Gaye gem and two songs which recreate Beach Boys harmonies and instrumental textures better than anyone. "Sycamore Bay" is a Sloop John B-ish track which starts with an a cappella section before the beat kicks in. Somebody does a killer Mike Love nasaltone vocal, too, but the real treat is the coda which is so beautiful I made it the ringtone on my phone...replacing "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times"! The other BB-like track is called Pale Blue Dot and it's more SMiLE-era-sounding with a very Carl-influenced lead vocal. These albums are available on iTunes and Amazon. If you invest 89 cents in Sycamore Bay and don't like it, I will eat Brian Wilson's shoe.
Seriously...you need this music. The group is no more, but I have played these two albums many, many, many times. Great---unknown---stuff.

Chaos & Creation is one of my personal favorite albums by anyone. I was delighted to download the bonus tracks later. I particular love "I Want You To Fly" as one of those Macca multi-part songs.

But "She Is So Beautiful"? Try "Dear Boy" from Ram for some interesting BB-esque harmonies.

God On My Side:  World Party
All My Sorrows:  Lindsey Buckingham
Hung Up and Overdue:  Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers [Carl sings backup on this track]
Summer Turns to High: R.E.M.
Beachball:  R.E.M.

The best song that I have heard that fits the meaning of a homage is Dave Edmunds "Beach Boy Blood (In My Veins)". A terrific tune that incorporates "Add Some Music...", "God Only Knows" and "Til I Die".

I love lyrical nods such as that in Neil Young's Long May She Run.  Much more tasteful than many failed attempted to emulate BBs' vocal arrangements/deliveries.

Second greatest band of all time with a song that appears to be about Mike Love, with some BB influenced vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unzQI3Fq6FE

I wanted to start a thread about the best songs Brian never wrote.

The Dukes (XTC) definitely, but here's one that just came out - and my wife thought it was the Beach Boys!
I'll give her the benefit of the doubt on this one (she should know better) since I loaded the car up with BB's and other summer favorites...

Cut Copy: Where I'm Going http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw6nviOv3tk

It sure reeks of unbridled happiness. Also tends to lean towards using vocals entirely to carry the melodies.

At least Coldplay asked Kraftwerk for their music. Panda Bear always wore their Brian Wilson influence a bit more on their (his) sleeve than AC, but I hadn't heard that song before. Does playing it backwards count? Hmmm.

How about this one from Roy Wood; a spot on Carl vocal imitation and some direct musical quotation (I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda)

"Why Does A Pretty Girl Sing These Sad Songs" is another great homage as well

Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids: Sons Of The Beaches

In the covers field: The Surfsiders (catch this if you can in a 2nd hand store: the most inept, funny and therefore pleasurable cult tribute possible. It beats, speaking in analogy, the work of Ed Wood Jr. The intro to California Girls is 'reduced' to fit the abilities of the boys so much, you can't stop laughing out loud; and the boy who sings 'Little Honds' sounds so terrified, you are fearing for his life, instead of admiring his motorbike driving).

(BTW: I had in on tape and that got lost. Will get it again if I come across it...).

Oh, OK; never mind.  I thought maybe you had a copy of the original "Beach Boys Songbook" cassette on the General Electric label, from 1967. That MIGHT have been by the Surfsiders, but I've never seen a copy to confirm it.

Cheers, and I take it that the DJ who presents the whole album goes by the name of Gaylord Fields. Elegant, that...
