Oooff! Old Tubey pointed me at this yesterday and I knew I had to link it here. Roll Eyes

Nice track. Lots of Herbie in there. It veers off into noodle land here and there. To me it's more lounge than Vanguard.  I know it's supposed to be jazz, but an edit version would be nice. I do like it.

It was that wicked bass line that did it for me. Nice splashes of synthetic sound in there too.

I found myself pointed in the direction of Henry Threadgill the other day. This was the second track of his I heard and it's a beauty. I looked further than "100 Year Old Game" but found most of the other stuff too abrasive for my liking. I guess jazz isn't really my thing...

A nice relaxed album featuring two fabulous guitarists. With thanks to Cool Cool Water for the heads up. Wink

What happened to all the jazz buffs on this forum? Anyway, this is a piece I was slated to play with a saxophonist colleague in a couple of week's time.

In the end we dropped it in favour of "Misty". It's a gorgeous instrumental all the same:

This is cheating, since "Jazz Thing" from Ultimate Spinach's 1968 album Behold and See is basically a pop song with a jazzy instrumental break. But it may serve to bring this topic back to life...

I've been building my nascent jazz collection over the last couple months. I recently started checking out the Blue Note Tone Poet series and the new Acoustic Sounds/Verve jazz reissues on vinyl. I also got the Bill Evans "Some Other Time: The Lost Session from the Black Forest" Record Store Day reissue this past weekend. I still don't know much about jazz, but I'm exploring and now own a bunch more of it.

I've yet to be bitten by the jazz bug so my interest is that of a passer-by peering in through the window. LOL

I got to hear this album opener yesterday, thanks to a former poster in this thread, and thoroughly enjoyed it (see wiki link for details):

Hard to go wrong with Art Blakey and/or Thelonious Monk.

I continue to enjoy my exploration of the different corners of jazz. Since my last post, I added a few more albums from the third Record Store Day installment, with Dexter Gordon, later Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and J.J. Johnson and Kia Winding.

Did you know Kai Winding had a US top ten hit in 1963 with "More"?

I believe he's also on Miles's Birth of the Cool...

I was listening to West Virginia NPR the other day and they played a Clarinet Concerto by Artie Shaw.  It was a classical music program but in introducing the number, the dj explained he blended elements of classical with jazz.

Heard this last night courtesy of Kapitan at BBT (thank you, that man).

The title track of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 album Red Clay features some stunning playing from all involved:

This December 6 will be the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s birth.
There will be lots of celebrations available for listening online. Check out DaveBrubeck.com for more info.
A couple of recordings have come out : one is an album of lullabies, the last recordings he made. I wasn’t able to read a review because it was behind a pay wall, but the British reviewer said in the headline that Brubeck was about the only jazz performer who could have pulled such a thing off. I’ve heard a couple of them - very sweet and calming . His Brahm’s Lullaby can be listened to online. It has a delightful video. Great for kids of all ages.
The other recording is called “Time OutTakes.” It’s alternate versions of all but two of the songs on Time Out (the last two songs, Three to Get Ready and Pick Up Sticks, were done in one take. Two other previously unreleased songs take their place).
This is available online to listen to. Take Five is a particular delight, and all are quite good.

In addition there have been a couple of great books that have come out this year concerning Brubeck. Will post about them later.

Thanks, Lizzie. Here's the Brahms lullaby Brubeck-style. The video could do with a few more views!

Just got word that Eugene Wright, 97, last surviving member of the “classic” Dave Brubeck Quartet, has joined his bandmates
and is making some heavenly odd time signature fun with them now.

Sad news, Lizzie, but a great age.

Be well in 2021.

I’m watching the Ken Burns doc Jazz. Have watched it before but it’s been awhile.
Part 3 spends a good amount of time covering cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. All I really remember about him was that he was in his 20s when he passed away.  But the doc indicated how much Black musicians respected him and that it was a shame that he couldn’t perform in concerts with them . Wanted to cry when he finally got the opportunity to jam after hours with his hero, Louis Armstrong . Very sad life, a shame that no matter the success he had, his father considered him to be a failure.
Looking for a good Bio, plus checking out recordings.

Hi Lizzie. This book about BB seems to be the one you need:

And this 2-CD set looks pretty good as well:

Hello Lizzie. First off, many belated happy returns on your birthday! I hope you are well. A poster at EH remembered you yesterday and another remarked on your absence there, so you are not forgotten. I had your birthday in my diary and onscreen but still missed out on it (crazy day)!

Here's Mr Beiderbecke with a suitably celebratory tune for you:

Thank you for the kind words and the link.
Things have been crazy in my world for a while now so it’s hard keeping up with the message boards.
Spent yesterday listening via Zoom to some fascinating history lectures.
Had a goofy dream that involved Al (for some reason he’s been in at least 3 of my dreams over the years). I told him that I was impressed that his cat knew how to play the mandolin. He looked at me as if I was crazy. Said he didn’t have a mandolin (does he have a cat?) Don't know why I dreamt that as I haven’t seen any mandolin playing by man, woman or cat in quite a while.  LOL

Glad to hear you seem to be okay if a little busy. That's one heck of a dream!! Grin

As for mandolin playing (by a person), Smiley poster aeijtzsche has a SoundCloud page of her playing music by Handel on electric mandolin. Highly recommended!
