Clearly, since the March 2011 Capitol announcement, the "Smile" box hasn't been a hoax, but what remains to be seen is whether the surviving group members will approve the finished product. Just because these musicians may have signed an agreement agreeing in principle to a "Smile" box doesn't mean that there aren't things they could do to cause years of postponements with grievances over liner notes, packaging or the mixes and running order.

Phil, as you've tacitly rejected my offer of a few hours ago, respectfully, but with emphasis -
STFU
.
You've just proven what I said earlier - you have no idea what you're talking about, or of anything to do with the project.
But... because I'm an inquisitive soul, please, tell me - why do you so badly want this project if not cancelled, then delayed for as long as possible ? Nothing to do with your reconstruction of
Smile
readily available on that Italian website, perchance ? (And before you say anything about me running to teacher, one, you posted the addy yourself here a while back; and two, interested parties have been aware of it for a long time, as I've told you more than once).

Phil, the fact that the
Pet Sounds
box was delayed is not "evidence" that the same thing will happen again with the
Smile
box. It's 15 years later -- everyone's older, the music industry is totally different, and (most importantly) everyone involved REMEMBERS what happened with the
Pet Sounds
box and wants to prevent it from happening again. Maybe that's one of the reasons why they've gone into "radio silence" since March -- they know that if they announced the details prematurely, and then ANYTHING changed afterwards, they would look bad, and people would start saying "Here we go again." Unfortunately, they can't win, because what MIGHT be prudence on their part is being interpreted by you (and others) as a "sign" of problems.

I really don't think Mike will fight this release, I think he has come to terms with SMiLE and the fact that the fans want the album, proving the album was commercial all along. The album isn't his type of music, but if the people want to go to his concerts after hearing it, Mike will promote the album and the release could stir enough interest for a reunion.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Like I said, Andrew is great, and I've known him for years, but I just think as a general rule there are better ways of expressing one's opinion, you know, different ways of writing something, to sound 'nicer'.
True, but sometimes 'nicer' doesn't work. Trying to tell someone something they don't want to hear would make the Pope swear sometimes. Also, and maybe I'm wrong here, this is a hard-core BB/BW MB, and the best one still standing, thus I assume a certain level of knowledge. Maybe that's just me being overoptimistic. Opinions ?
I agree with AGD, and i feel the problem with the world today is everyone trying to be so goshdarn nice. .
What we need are more wars.
I live in the country next to Norway so do not tell me about it, my point being more in the lines of this vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnjJvzprjN0
huh? I'm _from_ Norway, but don't see what that have to do with anything.
Look, we all know Andrew is perhaps the most knowledgable person on this board. That's fine. But, yes, I do think we need to be nicer to each other, don't slam people just because they are being pessimistic or stupid, or have strange opinions, or whatever. Ignore them, or answer them with a smile. Bring some humour on to the table instead. This is a Beach Boys board, let's enjoy it and stop bickering over silly people or opinions.

it shows how the world can become crazy, people hating each each other for no good reasons. Unbelievable!

It's not the opinions held - it's the monotonous repetition of those opinions when it's been made transparently clear that we're bored with it - just like a wilful child saying "yes, but
what if
... ?" for some five hours on end. I've tried fact, I've tried humour, I've tried ignoring him, I've even tried a compromise: no dice, thus the only recourse left open to me is to find out where he lives, go round there, superglue all the doors and windows closed and then firebomb the place. And I'm not convinced even that would shut him up, but I'm prepared to give it a go.

Truly sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar. For once I really wish you would follow your own advice. So it's coming out, 100% for sure no matter what. Good! Great! I can't wait to get it in my hands! If you know for sure, how about just not letting Phil Cohen bother you? Why are you taking everything he says so personally? We get it, you're awesome, you're the best beach boys fan, you're the special insider with all the secret knowledge. Congrats. But it's clear you won't convince him of anything, so why not just let time prove him wrong? Is it really such an afront to your ego that one man disagrees with you?
Quote from: guitarfool2002 on August 03, 2011, 07:34:20 AM
I'm not trying to call anyone out for spite or anything, but if it appears that way I'm saying beforehand it's all business, not personal...So a poster made a statement that Smile really isn't that popular. Then the same poster later suggested something along the lines that popularity cannot be measured objectively and such discussions are foolhardy.
I'm back again after reading through 3 pages or so with no reply since those posts to ask directly: What criteria are you applying to your original statement that Smile isn't popular? I'm honest in saying I am genuinely interested in finding out your reasons for coming to that conclusion. One criteria you state is the lack of interest on an unnamed message board - from the content of your posts I'm guessing there would be more substantial evidence or facts than something random like that in your mind before making such a statement.
So what is it? And can you back up such a statement, or was it made to stir the pot?
Jesus, move on man. This feels like the "how am I funny?" scene from Goodfellas. By saying that you can't measure popularity objectively, I was in no way contradicting myself. When trying to determine something as ill-defined as "popularity" you can go on little besides personal experience and anecdotal evidence. And in my personal experience Smile isn't particularly popular. But I'm sure you have the scientific proof don't you? The formula that "proves" popularity. This board seems to exist mostly for people to bitch about how the band's legacy isn't what it should be, and about how different releases deserve more esteem. Except this one time, when all of a sudden smile is popular. I haven't seen much evidence to suggest that, and the reaction among most people I've spoken to has been very tepid. If you have a different experience, good for you, I don't really care though, and I suggest you stop freaking out about this as it's not very becoming.

So ignore him some more! Just let it go man. Your compromise was idiotic and was in no way a compromise, it was just "do what I want". You're not the mature one, you're not the wise noble good hearted gentleman. You're no less a child than Phil.

Are we the voices of wisdon here? the wise people, knowing most of the arguments are pure non sense and useless?
and yes, Andrew, you very knowledgable (with Peter Reum too), and humour is the definition of SMiLE, so why can't you guys just wait quietly, being nice, and go to buy the Box set when it will be release??? come on, it is just about music, and music is suppose to make people "happy together", especially with the SMiLE album, this is the way Brian & Van Dyke made and created the whole concept. Music is not suppose to be a unversal language, of peace and joy?

Better yet BiG GRiN, why don't you just ask Phil and Fishmonk not to post about it. Then there is nothing to respond to and peace and joy returns. As long as they insist on posting about it, then we should have the opportunity to respond to it. It is all a pretty simple matter of "post and respond" or "no post and no response".

Be reminded that Brian & Mike's permissions are not the only permissions needed for this release. Though Mr.Doe will be enraged if I mention this, one of his e-mails hinted(though didn't state outright) that Al Jardine might be a source of problems.

Man, seriously, wake up. They are allowed to post opinions, even if they are wrong - WITHOUT getting sh*t back. How hard is that understand?!
Read what Big Grin just wrote, he is vouching for peace and love, and humour - Smile! Is that so bad?
There is so much horrible stuff going on in the outside world today, and you know what, this is a message board. Like I said before, let's be nice to each other in here, even if that means you gotta swallow a camel. Moderator, perhaps one of the moderators should voice their opinion about this.

Mike took exception to the original liner notes as they focused too much on Brian and made the rest of the band appear to be bystanders, if I remember correctly. Phil seems to be convinced that lightning is going to strike twice.

As for my "Smile" fan mix, it was created back in 2001-2003, and I myself never put it onto the internet, and it is no longer being offered. I look forward to Capitol creating something more thorough and polished.

Be reminded that Brian & Mike's permissions are not the only permissions needed for this release. Though Mr.Doe will be enraged if I mention this, one of his e-mails hinted(though didn't state outright) that Al Jardine might be a source of problems.
I think both Mike and Al finally understand after BWPS this album is Brian's would-be masterpiece and won't block the release of the album.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

AH! So Alan's "to-do-list" has made relevance here....basically, getting Postcard from California released was at the top and Smile box set is at the bottom! Let's find that list and cut/paste his priorities right. 1) Help put out Smile, 2) finish dental school, 3) finish solo album proposed in the early 80s like Poly Peptide, 4) kiss and make up with Mike over SIP (an album not worth fighting over), etc.

What happend with the Pet Sounds Box release? What matter are you implying? I wasn't a fan when it came out, so I don't know what you're describing.
Mike took exception to the original liner notes as they focused too much on Brian and made the rest of the band appear to be bystanders, if I remember correctly. Phil seems to be convinced that lightning is going to strike twice.
Not convinced, but genuinely worried.

As Andrew has stated many times, Mike, Brian, Al and Carl's Estate have all signed off on this project over a year ago. If Al originally spilled the beans on this release back in February, it would surely not be him holding anything up. You are full of conspiracy theories. You must really get off on doing this stuff.

Oh Brian
Thou Art In Hawthorne,
Harmonied Be Thy name
Your Kingdom Come,
Your Steak Well Done,
On Stage As It Is In Studio,
Give Us This Day, Our Shortenin' Bread
And Forgive Us Our Bootlegs,
As We Also Have Forgiven Our Wife And Managers,
And Lead Us Not Into Kokomo,
But Deliver Us From Mike Love.
