You can't prove or disprove popularity. It's foolhardy to even try. Like there's some smoking gun out there, some fact that will settle the matter in an objective fashion.
Quote
You answered your own question. Why should Capitol spend anymore money on marketing & advertising for a niche product? The people who are going to buy it already know 98% of what will be on it.
That's exactly the point I was making in the first place...so....
Capitol is planning three different versions of this thing, they're obviously hoping that people besides us are going to buy this release. Yet they've done an awful job with marketing. If they want this thing to have crossover appeal, if they want regular people to buy this, they have to create interest. Which they haven't done. They people they want to buy the one disc version or the two disc version have all forgotten about this by now.
This generation wants Instant Gratification. To release information too soon, say 2-3 months ahead, would have people forgeting about it come release time. One month lead time is all that I would give it. Then once reviews are out, the release will either take off or sink like a rock. Only diehard fans are looking for what you are asking for.

I can't wait for this set either, but i am trying to cope by listening to the earlier material and collecting live recordings. This band has so much music to listen to help deal with the wait.

For reasons entirely beyond my control, and none of them at all pleasant, I've been away from not just this forum but the 'net as a whole since early Saturday, and y'know, it's as depressing as hell to see that the usual suspects are still whining like spoilt children who've been told they can't have another slice of cake: Phil's even moved to the Bloo to try and spread his gospel of doom over there, which is about as smart a move as me setting up a liquor store on Main Street, Riyadh and has roughly the same chance of succeeding. The box is going to happen, irrespective of whether you've been informed or not, however much you want it to or not. All anyone who preaches a doctrine of woe is achieving is to piss off the majority of the other board members and in the process make themselves look like, to be polite, dicks. If that's your aim, gentlemen, congratulations, you've been entirely successful.
And know something ? After this weekend, and reading the same tedious posts here, I truly don't give a sh*t because in the grand scheme of events, it's not that big a deal, as people like my good friend Mr. Mayo will attest. The project will be released, it will get some great reviews and some crap ones, people here will bitch about every last aspect of it, it'll sell a few thousand copies and, in the long run, precisely no-one's life will be altered and greatly enriched. It's a piece of music. Not world peace, not cold fusion, not a cure for cancer or AIDS. It will be released... and then we will move on.
To all those naysayers - you don't know anything. You tacitly admit as much when you whine that there's no new information. Again:
you don't know anything
. There are folk, here and elsewhere on the 'net, who do have an inkling (size may vary due to settling in transit), and I'm sure they're finding your regular lamentations amusing: I know I do, and hell, what do I know ? So... until Capitol put out a press release saying "sorry guys, we've decided to pull the plug, not going to happen" (which they've not done yet, thus by your logic, that means it's happening), if you could kindly stop playing at Eeyore and try making some positive contribution to this forum... well, that would be nice.

It's funny, how claims of not caring and even
enjoying
the wait go hand in hand with angry tirades and insults.
I do find it humorous how so many here believe captiol records to be their own personal buddy living down the street from them who's doing them a favor by taping a copy of a record. This isn't a gift, it's a product, it's being released to make money. We're the customers, we're the ones they have to please, and they aren't doing a good job.

Andrew,
Now, even Brian Wilson is expressing uncertainty over whether the box set will be released. I consider Brian to be credible. Is the "Smile" box set going to be released? Brian says "Maybe". This is from a recent interview with a newspaper in Kentucky.

Yes, and it was after he had answered consecutive previous questions with "Yes" and "No" -- in other words, he'd run out of one-word answers, and "Maybe" was the only one left. Or maybe he thought that answering three straight questions with "Yes," "No," and "Maybe" would be just
hilarious
. Or maybe he thought there were mind bandits in the telephone. Who the hell knows? How anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Brian Wilson and his interview habits can even be the least bit concerned about that "answer" is beyond me.

You consider Brian to be credible ? Did you see the post I made on the Bloo containing what Brian said about
TSS
six days ago ? According to you, that's also credible.
Brian hates doing interviews, and he'll say almost anything to get them over and done with. Established fact. Said interview was a phoner and was done, I'd say, a few weeks ago. When interviewed on the street in London prior to the
Mojo
awards recently, Brian said his next album project would be Disney songs... which he'd finished recording back in March. Brian may be credible to you, but hardly anyone else.

No, Capitol Records is a business with a business plan. Just because Fishmonk & Phil don't agree with it, doesn't mean that they don't have one in place. Times are tough my friend, and they will promote Smile in the most economical way that they can and still promote it enough to help them make a profit. I have no problem waiting or even being a little surprised by what is inside. Knowing everything before release date, at least for me, takes away some of the excitement. It's kind of like knowing what's inside a beautifully wrapped Christmas present before you open it.

No, but apparently Nostradamus HAS predicted that the world is coming to an end next year, so it would be a nice idea to issue this box set while the people that would enjoy it are still living.

You find Brian Wilson credible? Let me paraphrase a few things:
- "
Smile
will never happen. I burned the tapes."
- "'Surfer Girl' is the first song I ever wrote."
- "i was born deaf in my right ear."
- "My dad hit me in the head with a two-by-four, and that's what made me deaf in my right ear."
- "My favorite Beach Boys album:
Friends
."
- "My favorite Beach Boys album:
The Beach Boys Love You
."
- "My favorite Beach Boys album:
Keepin' The Summer Alive
."
- "The song I'm most proud of: 'California Girls.'"
- "The song I'm most proud of: 'God Only Knows.'"
- "The best production I've ever done: 'The Little Girl I Once Knew'"
- "My favorite Beatles song: 'Let It Be.'"
- "I can't listen to 'Let It Be.'"
- "I'm going to tour
Smile
for about four or five years, then retire."
- "I'm going to retire after this tour."
- "I want to go on the road for at least another year or two, then retire."
- "Van Dyke Parks wrote all of
Smile
."
- "
Norbit
is my favorite movie."
- "I will not be joining the Beach Boys for a reunion."
- "I'll be joining the Beach Boys for a reunion."
- "My next album is going to be a rock'n'roll record."
VERY credible.

In fact, he neither refers to 2012 nor the end of the world, unless you count
Les Presages
. Certainly not in the
Centuries
, and in a prefatory letter to his son he stated that his prophecies are designed to cover the history of the world up to the year
3797
. Aside from that, pretty much all of his so-called prophecies have been debunked as bad or wishful translations.
Your bad luck I know a little about him, I guess.

My theory is that Capitol blew their minds in figuring out how to promote the box set and decided to junk the whole campaign cause they felt it was inappropriate. If we're lucky, they'll release "The SMiLE Sessions Promotional Material Boxset" in 44 years.
