Speaking of Best Buy exclusives, one wonders if Capitol and the ubiquitous electronics retailer will cook up something for TSS.   A bonus track in the 2CD set?  Perhaps a t-shirt giveaway?

If it's a t-shirt giveaway, I'll have to order yet ANOTHER version.

MUST HAVE SMiLE T-SHIRT!  Tongue

Hey, me too.  I was thinking of the t-shirt giveaways Best Buy has done for Clapton and Dylan packages in the last couple years.

"Part 3 (Animals) is a mystery to me, possibly something Barnyard related? Does anybody have any idea what Heroes sections Brian was calling Part 3 and Part 4? These maybe are new."

"Animals" = 'Swedish frog' grunts & groans ?

Also, now we have sections of "H&V" logged as parts 3 and parts 4, does this invalidate the notion of a part 1/part 2 single ?  maybe we've got a "Surf's Up" pt. 2 scenario here. Discuss.

Playing H&V for Humble Harv, after he sings the Barnyard lyrics, Brian also says something like "let's hear the ANIMALS!" or "cue the ANIMALS!" or something along those lines. Then he, VDP, and possibly someone else (can't recall) start making the animal noises over the chords.

That tape sounds more specifically like animals than the grunting and groaning, but I realize that's just splitting hairs. Cheesy

Maybe the notations of "part 3" and "part 4" are more indicative of Brian's scattershot approach to recording the sections of the song without having a firm masterplan for the sequence than they are suggesting unheard sections of a "suite" he had in mind.

Disc 3:

First song is Do You Like Worms, all the tracks are from October 18th, 1966. A Western session. The vocal session was on December 21st. Does that mean all of these tracks are instrumental only?
1. Do You Like Worms: Part 1 [DO YOU LIKE WORMS (ROLL PLYMOUTH ROCK) Session: 10/18/66]
2. Do You Like Worms: Part 2 (Bicycle Rider) [DO YOU LIKE WORMS (ROLL PLYMOUTH ROCK) Session: 10/18/66]
3. Do You Like Worms: Part 3 [DO YOU LIKE WORMS (ROLL PLYMOUTH ROCK) Session: 10/18/66]
4. Do You Like Worms: Part 4 (Bicycle Rider) [DO YOU LIKE WORMS (ROLL PLYMOUTH ROCK) Session: 10/18/66]
5. Do You Like Worms: Bicycle Rider Overdubs (Heroes And Villains Part 2) 1/5/67 [DO YOU LIKE WORMS (ROLL PLYMOUTH ROCK) Session: 10/18/66]

Which part is which? What's the difference between part 2 and part 4? The song on the GVbox has the first verse, the bicycle rider bit, the distorted second verse with bg vocals, bicycle rider again, the slide guitar part, and then bicycle rider a final time. Which track here contains the slide guitar parts? Part 3? I think track 5 may be the only one here with vocals. But I don't think we're getting anything new on these tracks.

6. My Only Sunshine: Parts 1 & 2 11/14/66 [MY ONLY SUNSHINE (THE OLD MASTER PAINTER / YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE)]
7. My Only Sunshine: Part 2 (Master Take With Vocal Overdubs) 2/10/67 [MY ONLY SUNSHINE (THE OLD MASTER PAINTER / YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE)]

The first track here is a Gold Star session, the second one is a Columbia session. The first track is apparently over 6 minutes long, less than what's available on UM 17. I believe Part 1 is Old Master Painter and Part 2 is Sunshine. Notice how track 7 says only for "part 2", it's probably the vocals recorded by Dennis that are available on Vigotone.

8. Cabin Essence: Verse [Cabin Essence Session: 10/3/66]
9. Cabin Essence: Chorus [Cabin Essence Session: 10/3/66]
10. Cabin Essence: Tag [Cabin Essence Session: 10/3/66]

Sessions for each of the sections, verses, chorus, and tag? 10/3 wasn't a vocal session so are we not going to get things like truck driving man as vocal only? I imagine the tag part includes stuff like the banjo-sitar rehearsals, so that should be cool.

11. Wonderful (Version 1) 8/25/66
12. Wonderful (Version 2) [Wonderful (Version 2 "Rock With Me Henry") Session: 1/9/67]
13. Wonderful (Version 2 Tag) [Wonderful (Version 2 "Rock With Me Henry") Session: 1/9/67]
14. Wonderful (Version 3) 4/10/67 ? [Wonderful (Version 2 "Rock With Me Henry") Session: 1/9/67]

Sessionography is confusing on this one. This is what's on Wikipedia for the song:
"Brian Wilson claims that he and Van Dyke Parks wrote the song along with "Heroes and Villains" "Cabin Essence" and "Surf's Up" in a giant sandbox with a piano in it that Wilson had built in his living room. The original version was based around a harpsichord (with numerous bootlegs documenting Wilson's attempts at recording the basic harpsichord track on his own). The harpsichord track was then mixed with some horn overdubs together with a bass, both entering in the second verse. A recording session featuring only Brian and Al Jardine was held in January, 1967 in which they recorded the backing vocals. Afterwards, Brian recorded the lead vocal on his own."
So tracks 12 and 13 are from a session with just Al and Brian, doing rock with me henry? There were a few vocal sessions in between 8/25 and 1/9, presumably that's where the yodeling vocals from the mojo single are from. After all in David Oppenheimer's notes he did mention the yodeling, and that was from a December 1966 session.
Also what's the tag? I don't have anything that might be considered a tag.
And 4/10/67 for "version 3" that's gotta be something brand new right? That day was supposedly a Vega-Tables vocal session. Ugh, so confusing.

15. Look 8/12/66 [LOOK (SONG FOR CHILDREN)]

Backing track session. No vocals were found I guess.

16. Child Is Father Of The Man (Version 1) 10/7/66
17. Child Is Father Of The Man (Version 2) 10/11/66

Both of these were western sessions. No vocals on either of them?

18. Surf's Up: 1ST Movement 11/4/66
19. Surf's Up: Talking Horns 11/7/66
20. Surf's Up: Piano Demo (Master Take) 12/15/66

So does track 18 not include the horn overdubs done on 11/7? Track 19 is George Fell Into His French Horn. Track 20 is the demo we already had. The date on the demo is kind of weird. The Goodbye Surfing article says that the demo was recorded with David Oppenheimer present and that it took place after a vocal session that went poorly. AGD's site doesn't list any smile sessions for 12/15. What's that all about? Also the 1967 session on Jan 23rd isn't included. Is that supposed to be the "second movement" one?

21. I Wanna Be Around 11/29/66 [I WANNA BE AROUND / WORKSHOP (FRIDAY NIGHT)]

Nothing surprising there. Any reason they didn't include "Jazz"?

22. Vegetables: Verse (Master Take Track) 4/4 - 4/11/67 [VEGA-TABLES (VEGETABLES) Sessions: 4/4-4/11/67]
23. Vegetables: Sleep A Lot (Chorus) [VEGA-TABLES (VEGETABLES) Sessions: 4/4-4/11/67]
24. Vegetables: Chorus 1 (Master Take) [VEGA-TABLES (VEGETABLES) Sessions: 4/4-4/11/67]
25. Vegetables: 2nd Chorus (Master Take Track And Backing Vocals) [VEGA-TABLES (VEGETABLES) Sessions: 4/4-4/11/67]
26. Vegetables: Insert (Part 4) (Master Take) [VEGA-TABLES (VEGETABLES) Sessions: 4/4-4/11/67]

Confusing dates. Vocal sessions were held April 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 14. April 12th was the only instrumental session it seems. All of these range from between the 4th and the 11th. Does anybody have any idea what sessions are on the UM box?

Isn't there an April 1967 version of "Wonderful" on the SOT Source Tape?

As far as "Jazz" goes, my best guess is it wasn't significant enough to warrant inclusion.  If it's just a improvisation or a short burst of music, it was probably listened to by the compilers and then passed on by.

From what has been told about "Jazz", you can get the same effect by listening to that tape of noodling jazzers from the GV sessions.

April 1967...isn't that the "rock with me Henry" version? I'm not a fan of that one compared to the harpsichord/trumpet version.

I believe that one is more like the Smiley Smile version if I remember correctly. "Rock with me Henry" is from January I believe.

I thought the January version was the one with the yodeling overdubs? That's a vocal session that David Oppenheim and CBS happened to be filming in mid December 1966 for Inside Pop, it's in his notes.

A little bit of the April '67 Wonderful is on the SOT Smiley set. Just piano and group backing vocals (emphasis on Mike). It's a very interesting snippet and I hope they give us alot more of it.

This is probably wishful thinking, but i don't know that it's safe to assume that vocals weren't found just because they are not represented in the sessions portion of the box. Acetates could have been found, in which case, just glancing at the tracklist, you wouldn't know that something with only instrumental sessions would have vocals on the "album."

That's why I said I thought it was April '67...not that it was. Smiley I always thought the Henry version was later in the timeline, but obviously it's not. I still like the one from the GV box set, that was one of the songs that just floored me at the time and still does. Any other version of Wonderful falls short of that one, to me.

On the topic of giveaways, I'd like to see a Michael Vosse bobblehead to go along with the set. Maybe a Best Buy exclusive, like they do at baseball games for the first 1,000 fans.

I was thinking the same thing when I first saw the track listing - it's not like they're going to have it say "Do You Like Worms (with newly discovered lead vocal)" or anything.  I'm betting (or, let's be honest, hoping) that we get a newly unearthed lead vocal for either "Worms," "IIGS," or "Barnyard."  No doubt vocals were tracked for at least one of these, if not all three, so there must have been an acetate out there somewhere.

I always thought the same thing actually, on all counts.  Brian should have left "Wonderful" as it stood at the end of '66 - there's just no bettering that version.  I remember hearing it for the first time and just being blown away by it's beauty.

Animals or whatever is probably what Al Jardine said about Brian making them do animal noises in the studio.

I think if they had found a new acetate the track would be labeled "acetate version".

From looking over the tracklists, I don't see any mention of acetates - does this mean there are none utilized for the release?  Or would they not list it as such?   I'm curious because I'm wondering if any of this was sourced from such items.

EDIT:  Oops, well guess Peter just answered my question.  So there is at least one acetate source then.
