Dennis re-recording his own songs
«

We've all heard his cut of Only With You (which is fantastic), but I was wondering, he re-cut the whole track, right? The synth he added has a great sound to it.
Also, I've read on different sources that he re-did Lady, but just called it Flowers Come in the Spring, when was this?
Did Dennis have intentions of using Holy Man on Bambu?
Hypothetically, how could Dennis not want to release Wouldn't it Be Nice to Live Again? We all know the debacle of his songs cut from Surf's Up...but why not throw it on So Tough? Or was it to be on his solo album with Cuddle Up and Make it Good?

Hell, I've always wondered why he didn't throw it on So Tough. The album's only thirty minutes and eight songs long, after all. Maybe he just didn't think it was good enough. Maybe it conflicted with his assertive version of pop. Who knows? Hope it gets a release soon, though, before someone makes off with the master tapes.

That's not a synth on the "POB" version of "Only With You"...it's an accordion (played by Ron Altbach).

good call
Also, I wanna throw in the re-recording of San Miguel; was this part of Time for Bed? I know it's just an instrumental version...anyone know its intentions?

On the Dumb Angel Rarities for Bambu, there's a cut of what sounds like a re-cut of San Miguel (instrumental). I could be totally wrong. Maybe I'm just thinking of the track to New Orleans (time for Bed).

I know nothing specific about any of these recordings, but I do know from my fandom of 50's rock and roll that often people re-record songs because of ownership issues. Perhaps if he recorded some of the early ones on Brother records, he rerecorded them and paid for the studio time himself so he would own the masters if he released an album.
Or maybe not! Like I said I don't know anything specific about Dennis or his songs.

i would venture to guess Dennis' motives would be artistic in nature ... simply wishing to hear a different arrangement or perhaps a dissatisfaction with elements of the original.

Yes, if you go to Page 62, I think I can answer your questions.
Jon, I think Punkinhead was referring to the "alternate" versions of "Time For Bed" which incorporate the modulations from "San Miguel", one of which (cut for L.A. Light Album) has been widely booted.

That was for LA?
FAR OUT!
It woulda been the only rock song on the album, unless you consider the Shortenin' Bread cut a rocker.

I'm a hardcore LIGHT ALBUM defender, and usually don't like the fan lists for how the album could have been "improved," but more Dennis on there, particularly "Time For Bed"...yeah, that coulda been REAL cool.

Man, I simply
have
to sit down and take the time to really absorb all of your hard work in writing this, but more importantly, I have to thank you for taking the time to do this. It's fantastic to see Dennis' work taken so seriously; more importantly for me, though, it transports me right back to the time of these sessions... Again, thank you!

C-man, I take it that beachboysarchives.com is your handiwork? A great site and big thanks to you for all the fascinating information you managed to get on the POB/Bambu recordings, your dedication to the cause is admirable!

Thanks...glad to see you (and Ed) appreciate it. POB has always been one of my favorite albums from the time it came out, and the process Dennis went through to create it has always facinated me. Having all those great Bambu tracks available officially really drew me in even further. And thanks to many sources (both secondary and primary), I was lucky enough to have enough research material on hand to write those essays.

Hey! Thanks for all this wonderful info! Was about to write a request for some information on
POB
, decided to search for it instead and came upon this thread, and then onto your incredibly informative .pdf. Thanks for assembling all that info! Great resource.
I can't stop playing 'Holy Man' (instrumental version) - WOW! Basically just discovered how amazing this album is.
Anyone have any more info on the Dennis Wilson movie 'The Drummer'?

Just drop HCTN and Sumahama and replace them with Dennis tunes (and Looking Down the Coast!).

Wow, I got referred to c-man's long article on POB by this thread. What a fantastic resource Craig! I especially love the entry on "Holy Man." I just love the quote from John Hanlon in 2000: "If ever I could accomplish one thing, it would be to go into the vaults and find that song. Just to
hear it one more time, I wouldn't care if it never even came out". Thank goodness he persisted and was able to get the track onto the Legacy edition.
It is so cool to read about the band on the "Holy Man" track, which is in my all-time top ten. Really cool that Denny did all keyboards and synths, Carl did the guitar, and Ricky the drums. I just love the way the "band" sounds on it. Carl's guitar work is phenomenal. God what a track!
