Smashing Pumpkins did it in 2000.

Machina? That was on a label, Caroline. Plus, they were hardly at the peak of their powers--probably four years past them. A lot of people who had liked them earlier already thought Adore was a step down. Granted, Radiohead may find themselves in a similar boat, but there is a lot more notice of their upcoming online release than there was in 2000 around the Pumpkins.

No, it wasn't Machina. It is the one after Machina called Friends and Enemies of Modern Music. Though I do agree, their career climaxed at Mellon Chollie and the Infinite Sadness and by 2000 they were quite boring and their fan base knew it and they knew it (very different from Radiohead).

Don't forget Brian has ALREADY put an album out just through his web-site.

When Live At The Roxy was first released it was only available from his web-site. It was how I got hold of it and how I discovered the Blueboard and later this site and others!

It then got released by labels in the US and UK (all of who added bonus tracks damn them!) later, but the Brimel label version was the first.

The trouble was then no-one takes it seriously without a full release in shops - so there were no reviews in the UK rock mags or anything to push sales.

Bit of a different scene now.

I'm certain kshane does realize this. But he's also probably aware that they are the first major rock band that is arguably still in its prime when it decides to do it ("It," of course, being not only releasing an album initially as download-only, and without a label, and letting customers set the price.) Nobody of Radiohead's magnitude has yet done that combination, and so it matters more that they do it.

Let's be realistic: I could do the same thing. And it wouldn't matter in the slightest bit. Radiohead does, and it does.

There--now I've spoken for kshane, which was entirely unnecessary and not asked for.

Luther, thanks for speaking so eloquently on my behalf. You're exactly right of course. And if any other band of any stature has allowed purchasers to name their own price, I am not aware of it. The whole point is that this is one of the biggest bands in the world. That's why it's important.

I can't think of another band that's so admired by young musicians particularly. When word of this reached me on Sunday, I was at a benefit show that featured about twenty local bands. The story spread like wildfire, and the excitement was palpable throughout the music community.

It's one of the main reasons I love them, really.
