This was posted to Pitchfork today.  The vinyl reissue sounds tasty:

Pet Sounds, "Good Vibrations" Reissued
Fans now literally able to pick up “Good Vibrations”

Brian Wilson turned 64 on June 20, and this year also marks the 40th anniversary of his two biggest classics: Pet Sounds and "Good Vibrations", which means the man was 24 when he wrote and recorded them. (Yeah, you and I are total slackers.)

Fortunately, you don't have to be a musical genius to appreciate the Beach Boys reissues Capitol/EMI has planned for this summer. First up is the June 27 release of a "Good Vibrations" CD single featuring five versions of the song, including the original single version and an alternate studio take never before released in the U.S., as well as the song's original B-side, "Let's Go Away for Awhile".

Let's take a look at the tracklist:

01 Good Vibrations (original 45 RPM single version)
02 Good Vibrations (edit taken from various sessions)
03 Good Vibrations (alternate studio take, previously unreleased in U.S.)
04 Good Vibrations (instrumental)
05 Good Vibrations (live concert rehearsal, August 25, 1967)
06 Let's Go Away for Awhile

Pet Sounds' reissue is a more extravagant affair. According to Billboard, the release is planned for August 29 and will come in two editions: double vinyl and CD/DVD. The press release for the reissue floating around the internet claims the vinyl edition is "limited to 10,000 numbered copies worldwide" and comes "in a deluxe gatefold sleeve [with] the album's mono mix on yellow vinyl...complemented by the stereo mix on green vinyl."

The CD/DVD release is even more awesome. The CD portion suspiciously resembles the 1999 remastered reissue of the album, from featuring both the complete mono mixes followed by the complete stereo mixes of the album down to the "Hang on to Your Ego" mono bonus track dividing the two, so it seems unlikely that this release will feature a whole new mastering job. It will, however, include a 5.1 Surround Sound mix on the DVD. Just for the sake of thoroughness, we've listed the CD's tracklist below.

Animal noises:

01 Wouldn't It Be Nice (Mono)
02 You Still Believe in Me (Mono)
03 That's Not Me (Mono)
04 Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) (Mono)
05 I'm Waiting for the Day (Mono)
06 Let's Go Away for Awhile (Mono)
07 Sloop John B (Mono)
08 God Only Knows (Mono)
09 I Know There's an Answer (Mono)
10 Here Today (Mono)
11 I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (Mono)
12 Pet Sounds (Mono)
13 Caroline No (Mono)
14 Hang on to Your Ego (Bonus Track) (Mono)
15 Wouldn't It Be Nice (Stereo)
16 You Still Believe in Me (Stereo)
17 That's Not Me (Stereo)
18 Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder) (Stereo)
19 I'm Waiting for the Day (Stereo)
20 Let's Go Away for Awhile (Stereo)
21 Sloop John B (Stereo)
22 God Only Knows (Stereo)
23 I Know There's an Answer (Stereo)
24 Here Today (Stereo)
25 I Just Wasn't Made for These Times (Stereo)
26 Pet Sounds (Stereo)
27 Caroline No (Stereo)

The real reason this release is different (and better!) than the kajillion other Pet Sounds reissues, box sets, and imports is the DVD, which features promo films (basically an early name for music videos) for "Pet Sounds", "Sloop John B", and "Good Vibrations" in addition to a photo gallery synched to audio of "God Only Knows" and three documentary films.

The first documentary is called The Making of Pet Sounds and features interviews with all of the Beach Boys, including the now-deceased Dennis and Carl Wilson. According to the internet-leaked press release, the second documentary, Pet Stories, is more of a reflection piece and includes a couple of in-depth discussions of specific songs as well as a chapter called "Competition With the Beatles". Finally, there is an excerpt from BBC TV documentary Rhythm of Life, a previously unreleased Brian Wilson interview conducted by Sir George Martin of "fifth Beatle" fame. Below is that not-quite-confirmed tracklist.

California's funniest pet videos:

01 The Making of Pet Sounds
02 Pet Stories
03 Rhythm of Life
04 Good Vibrations (previously unreleased)
05 Sloop John B
06 Pet Sounds
07 Photo Gallery

Finally, the three living founders of the Beach Boys (Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine) made a rare appearance together with longtime member Bruce Johnston and onetime Jardine replacement David Marks on the roof of Capitol Records' Los Angeles office tower on June 13 to accept plaques commemorating the group's double-platinum sales of the 2003 hits compilation Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys.

Love, who has sued Wilson twice now (most recently just last November), praised the songwriter for his genius and has hinted at a possible Beach Boys reunion. Will it be a tour? An album? The only thing we know is that the Boys have a Sounds of Summer sequel titled Warmth of the Sun tentatively planned for next spring, and Love has never shied away from milking the cash cow. For now, let's just cherish the reissued memories.

The mono/ stereo CD has been remastered for the anniversary and most importantly a newly found flat digital xfr made in 1987 was used as the source for the mono version.

Mr. Linett,

Is the 5.1 mix on the new release the same as the 5.1 mix from the DVD-A?  I already own the DVD-A, but I don't own a DVD-A player, so I can only play the DVD video side of the disc.  Will the quality and/or mix be any different on this 5.1 release?

Thanks,

The vinyl sounds great. I wish they were doing vinyl on the whole catalog. (The Pet Sounds and Good Vibes Box set, Hawthrone, Endless Harmony, the Christmas) I can dream can't I?

It is the same mix w/ dolby digital encoding as on the DVD-A . The collection of videos is the most unique aspect of the DVD and the new improved mono master on the included CD also makes this worth getting imo.

I was at Best Buy in my hometown (Knoxville, TN) today and saw 3 copies of the new GV single.  I guess they put them out a tad early!  Unfortunately, I am flat broke until Monday and couldn't pick it up!!  What a blow!  Anyways, I don't know if it was released early or if this was just a mistake with the store but keep your eyes open!  Oh, by the way, the price was $9.99.

@Mark Linett: Is "Pet stories" the same video as on the "Brian Wilson presents Pet Sounds Live"-DVD?
And the other film ith all the BBs, does it include Al this time? On the Audio-DVD, there is a Pet Sounds-documentary (15 mins I believe) but Al wasn't included. So is this video a new one?

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

It is a 1630 flat copy of the original mono master which we assumed had been lost or intentionally discarded. (the 1630 that is)
