In the Smile box set packaging, there is a little news item reproduced that reported a meeting between Brian, Carl, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison at Derek Taylor's home. When did this happen? I saw it, thought about it, then realized it was a meeting I don't recall hearing about unless I did and forgot about it.

Putting the pieces together: There are two specific early-to-mid 60's Beatles-Beach Boys meetings described in several sources, one of them obviously the Paul McCartney-Brian "On Top Of Old Smokey" meeting in April '67 when Paul was in Los Angeles (through Derek Taylor), and another in Portland Oregon, August 1965, where the Beatles met up with at least Mike and Carl backstage at a show.

This other meeting - Brian, Carl, Paul, George at Derek Taylor's house - does anyone have additional information or details on this? I'm thinking one of the only times it could have happened prior to the meeting with Paul in April '67 was when the Beatles visited Los Angeles in '65, held court at a rental house, and spent time with the likes of Elvis, the Byrds, Peter Fonda, and other assorted LA scene-makers.

There are multiple press reports of Dennis at the Beatles Aug. 23, '64 Hollywood Bowl concert, and at least one of these refers to him as being "backstage"...no idea if he said hello to anyone in the Beatles entourage. Considering the Beach Boys were in PA playing shows on the 22nd and 24th I guess its possible he flew in and out.  Also, didn't Brian attend the '65 HB Beatles show? Its aways seemed odd to me that Beatles/Brian weren't introduced then.

I read about the meeting at Derek Taylors house a few weeks ago in the new Byrds Biography Requiem for the Timeless by Johnny Rogan. Ill look it up later tonight.

That would be great, please report back GuyO! I don't have that book and if it's in there, I think that's the meeting being reported in the news clipping from the Smile box.

And that would beg the question, if it were in 1965 why include the snippet among the Smile-era news reports in that collage? Or maybe the meeting was later, but I can't remember or think of any other times George and Paul would have both been in LA, and I don't recall Brian or Carl mentioning it in interviews or books as they did other meetings.

And I'll also need to track down the source, but *one* book has another backstage meeting mentioned where some Beach Boys (Dennis, if I recall, I could be wrong...) were not being as friendly to the visiting Beatles as others (no info on that date if it happened), while another book only lists Mike and Carl as meeting them at that Portland concert, August 22 1965, suggesting also that it was a "surprise" when Mike and Carl showed up. This was the concert they were flying to when the Beatles' airplane filled with smoke and they thought the plane was going to crash.

As the Beatles were on the flight, apart from the chaos/emergency, Philadelphia journalist Larry Kane recalled overhearing them discussing Brian Wilson and meeting the Beach Boys, and Ringo was a very big fan of the Beach Boys and was excited ('A thrill to meet them...' Ringo told Kane) to talk to them. That's part of the story you don't hear too often: Ringo was a major fan of the Beach Boys.

I'm working on something related to the Beatles in Los Angeles, and wanted to ask if anyone had some new info for this topic.

While researching and gathering info, I found an interview Brian gave in the past year since this was posted where he says specifically "I didn't meet Paul until 1967", yet as it says above there is that printed report shown in the Smile box which says otherwise.

Obviously in '64 it couldn't have happened because as the Beatles were in LA playing the Hollywood Bowl that third week of August 1964 (the subject of my researching), the Beach Boys were on the east coast, playing in Allentown PA of all places.

In August 1965 the Beatles were back in LA, so has this time period ever been confirmed as the time Derek Taylor got these four together?

If anyone has since found something new on this, I would really appreciate any updates, short of something written which I'm just not remembering right now. Obviously there is a contradiction between a press release written at the time of the meeting, and what Brian said in the recent interview.

Thanks!

For what it is worth, I found notes of a Tiger Beat article in a December 1966 issue on page 38 about the Beatles most recent US tour which claimed  Bruce partied with the Beatles during their U.S. tour and on the  first night, after a pre-dawn arrival, in LA and after a late afternoon visit to Capitol Tower for a press conference; The Beatles staying at 7655 Cusan Terrace. Was that Taylor's address?

“That night about 30 party guests were greeted at the garden gate….Paul, the perfect host, mixed most, Ringo talked with his family on the phone.  George and John sometimes played pool, Beach Boys albums played continuously. Among those present…John, Michelle, Cass … Jim McGuinn…David Crosby… Bruce Johnston, the sixth Beach Boy,…. Mr. And Mrs. Derek Taylor, Mr. And Mrs. Bill Medley, Mr. And Mrs. Bobby Hatfield. Priscilla and Elvis Presley were invited . They didn’t show…Rodney Biggenheimer, 19, …Chris Hillman…and a girl named Tracy”  and about 15 others.

Edit: Google Maps does not find even a Cusan Terrace in LA.

On the next page 39 of the same issue of tiger Beat is “After dark Paul and George popped in on the Derek Taylors, had long talkathon with Brian Wilson and Carl Wilson, and their wives. David Crosby ambled in. Dave may pick up George in London for a quick trip to India to buy new Indian musical instruments and take a few lessons.”

I may still have the magazine, I'll look if I remember.

Isn't there a Derek Taylor story about Paul meeting Brian at his house and Brian plays a tape or acetate of GV or H&V and Paul asks if he can have a copy and Brian declines?

PS. in searching for "Paul" I found a longish discourse by Michael Vosse  from 2001 about Paul Jay Robbins. Did not remember it.

OF course, if you were to google 7655 Curson Terrace, you might find something...

Well done. Now I'll have to find that mag to see if Tiger Beat can't spell or I can't type. Or both.

That is terrific info and research, I had no idea that article existed. Questions answered, mystery solved - It doesn't get much better than that. Great stuff, thanks for the info.

I had a feeling it was during their stay in LA in summer '66, it was the most logical time and place it could have happened. This fills in the gaps, thanks again.

I didn't know whether to post this here or in the other thread...maybe I'll try to merge them so all of this info is in one place.
