There's a new 2-CD Beach Boys collection coming from the UK label "Easy Action"(the label which released The Yardbirds 5-CD boxed set "Glimpses"). The Beach Boys set combines the "Surfin' Safari" album(probably public domain material in the UK) with a verbatim reissue of "Lost & Found", the Morgan sessions disc originally released in the U.S.A. by the DCC label.

You'd think that Capitol & The Beach Boys would want to release an upgraded/expanded "Surfin' Safari" CD (perhaps partly remixed for stereo, for those song which can be remixed) to compete against unauthorized UK/Europe releases, and to extend the copyright protection of The Beach Boys 1962 archival material, but Capitol & The Beach Boys' response is to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

I'm surprised, but, then again, ABKCO is totally oblivious to the fact that nearly two hours of unreleased (but already bootlegged) 1964 Rolling Stones music will enter UK/Europe public domain in mid-December. Labels releasing public domain CD's still have to pay song publishing royalties, but the performers don't get any artist royalties.

Been very surprised and disappointed at be inaction from the band's own label since these grey reissues stated to appear two or three years ago.  Keep hoping that they have somehing up their sleeves but no whispers.

I was under the impression that, as of now, the European public domain law extended copyright to 70 years. Is the Beatles' I Want To Hold Your Hand public domain or the Surfer Girl PD? Anyone have more info on the status of PD?

Effective since changes in UK/Europe laws, RELEASED recordings from 1963 onward get 70 year protection, but UNRELEASED recordings still get only 50 year protection.
