Earlier this year Sprint began running a new commercial for the Samsung Galaxy, featuring a toddler playing basketball.  The commercial starts with a repeating guitar lick, punctuated by a shout of "GO!"  The music is from a song called "Nightshot" by the group Faca, but after listening to it multiple times I am convinced that the "GO" is sampled from the Beach Boys version of "Little Honda."  Judge for yourself:

What do you think?

Lee

[ps: The guitar lick sounds familiar as well -- maybe "Marie Marie" by The Blasters?  Bobby Lloyd, you out there?]

Sounds like it, Lee.

"Dennis, are you yelling "Go!" again?"

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Yup. I heard it when we saw Iron Man 3 on Saturday. If it was some random people shouting "GO!" I don't think my ears would have pricked up. IMO it's definitely a sample lifted directly from Little Honda.

That's exactly what happened to me.  I first saw the commercial during the NCAA basketball coverage, and my ears perked up when the "GO" came over the speakers.

I think the "GO" is also Faca and the song sounds like caca.  Evil

Hey Little Tomboy is creepy. Banging women by the pool is fun and conjures up warm summer thoughts a Beach Boys song should.

Sorry, it's obviously from Little Honda. Wonder if it was cleared, I might run and tell BRI, maybe I'll get an early boxset as a reward

I already dropped an email to Messrs. Linett and Boyd, to relay the message to Mr. Lott Wink

Do you have to get permission for a brief sample? I didnt think that was necessary.

Absolutely necessary, yes. Both from the owners of the copyright in the recording and the owners of the copyright of the song. If they *didn't* get permission (which they will have done) then that "go!" could even lead to Mike and Brian eventually getting sole songwriting credit for the track.

There are laws around fair use and so on which can affect things (for example if you're making a non-commercial educational recording, or if you're using the sample to create a parody of the original) but normally you would have to get permission.

Yeah, if this was just a club DJ creating a remix for non-broadcast use, it might be one thing, but since it's in a national (perhaps international) TV commercial it's a whole different ball of wax.

Interestingly, the version of "Nightshot" on YouTube contains some additional voice samples of the cartoon character Speedy Gonzales shouting "Arriba! Arriba! Andele! Andele!", but the TV commercial omits those.  I bet that was due to licensing issues -- but it's also much more recognizable than a single shouted "GO!"

Obviously taken from "Little Honda" (btw just yesterday I saw someone riding a little Honda).
Anyway, that "go" is so direct and energetic. In fact without it the song losses energy imo. But with that intro you are right in the drive and it won't stop

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.
