This is one beautiful underrated song, imo.  The melody is haunting and Brian's lead, although a bit rough, is effectively sad and longing.

I noticed a number of people ranked it #1 over on the Surfin' USA thread, while a few people voiced their dislike for it.  I can't help but wonder if a tighter performance and less primitive mix would have made this song more hitworthy.  As someone pointed out in the Remasters thread, the mono mix is so much better than the stereo.  Still, I'm surprised they didn't rerecord it for Surfin' USA.  The Boys' harmonies had improved a great deal by then.

I've always wondered about that.  Is the version on "Surfin' USA" the same as the one on the tape that Murry gave to Capitol to try to get the boys a contract?

I think it is the same, except the backing vocals were overdubbed during the SUSA sessions.

I never knew that.  So that's why there's so much hiss on this track?

I've never given a thought to it's origin or whether it was re-recorded or not, i've just always loved it. Great song!

Steve Almaas and Ali Smith do a splendid cover of this song:

This is by 3 women and a guitar player,  without the spoken words:

"This pain in my heart, these tears in my eyes, please tell the truth..."

Yeah the mono is great on the early albums. I don't think I've listened to a stereo Surfin USA in fifteen years.
