While reading the awesome "50 Sides of The Beach Boys" I found that John Philips recorded an early version of Kokomo. When I listened to it, I realized that the song itself is absolutely amazing, and is FAR FROM the Beach Boys "Classic"...

For those of you that have heard it... what do you think?

I think it's boring.

Granted, the production on the original is less grating and more natural, but otherwise, the changes were warranted. No version of Kokomo would make my list of favorite Beach Boys songs, but theirs is catchier and more exciting by a long stretch.

I have to admit, The BB version is much better in just about everyway. Trimming the fat, attaching a catchy hook, and even the production.  Shocked

Yes.

Although I really enjoy this "original version", the Beach Boys' take on it is far catchier and just better...

...Unlike Fairy Tale Girl / Somewhere Near Japan: to me, those two versions are both brilliant in their own different way.
