I'm like 90% sure it was released after the deadline to be considered "this year's album"

When's the cutoff date again?  In addition to SMiLE, I'm hoping Paul Simon's latest gets recognized also.

As I recall, the cutoff date stated by AGD was September 30th.

Does that mean that anything after October 1st is counted the following year? If not, then I quit!

I think it would behoove Beach Boys fans to ignore the Grammys, but let's remember - by and large, Beach Boys fans aren't known for their dizzying intellect.

Try reading the Grammy rules. It'll save you this kind of embarrassment in the future.

Why does anyone even give a merda about the Grammy's? It's like a High School popularity contest only much, much worse. Great art transcends award ceremonies. Even Homer Simpson knew this. He threw a Grammy out the window.

And it wasn't Homer that did it, it was the busboy he gave the statue to.

At this point, I'm almost thinking it's better not to even be associated with the Grammys, considering the kind of "artists" they've been (for the most part) honoring in recent years (Kanye, Katy Perry, and (shoot me now) Taylor Swift). Let's face it, none of them are even in the same atmosphere of talent as the BBs.

And (totally off topic) I think the same thing has happened to The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. There is no way (at least imho) on God's green Earth the Sex Pistols, Madonna, The Stooges, Metallica, Run-DMC (apparently they switched to Rock when I wasn't looking) and the other 90% of inductees from the last 10 years belong in a club with the likes of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee, The Beach Boys or Elvis for goodness sake! I mean how long before it's Britney and Bieber?! The prestige is totally gone.

The point is that art is subjective...and the busines of art is not always built on ability or creative talent, rather too often what will sell. How does one award prestige in a Hall of Fame for art? Or for that matter hand out a trophy?

Would any real artist greatly depend on an award for self-esteem? IMO, no. However any humble human being would accept the honor with gratitude without investing too much into the popularity circus, which for the most part, those things are.

I feel it may be more about people trying to feel good for handing out awards rather than actually quantifying, elevating, and appreciating great art.

What do I know though, I've only wasted 22 days, 17 hours and 54 minutes of my life on SSMB...compared to zero time being involved in the Grammy or RnR HOF selection process. *sigh*

The Sex Pistols, The Stooges and Run-DMC absolutely deserve to be inducted into a club that also includes the acts that you mentioned. Furthermore, if there is anything that those rock and roll artists stood against in their day it was "prestige". The video of The Kinks being inducted into the Hall of Fame is well worth watching. Ray Davies, in his speech notes, "Tonight, rock and roll has become respectable." The audience applauds. Then Davies says, "What a bummer." His point, initially not taken by the conservative, self-congratulatory Hall of Fame audience, is well taken by me - that in order for music to have any kind of real vitality, meaning, and importance, it must actively shun respectability and, for that matter, prestige. I think that the Pistols, the Stooges, and Run DMC are particularly fine examples of this and something that is significantly missing in music today.

The Stooges don't belong in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame? Now, I don't care who you are, that's funny.

You invite me to pick up my award
After all the time I've been out here
My music is still the same
Why is it just now getting there?
Wonder why this one got such play?
Wonder why all the fuss is made?
Now the turntables goin' 'round and 'round

Who's the judge of this anyway?
My music said what I had to say
Who decides if it's wrong or right?
The authority with such insite?
Wonder why this one got such play?
Wonder why all the fuss is made?
Now the turntables goin' 'round and 'round

We thought you wanted to be a star
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/carl-wilson-lyrics/grammy-lyrics.html ]
You worked so hard to get this far
You played all the small time scenes
We just wanted to fulfill your dreams
You won a grammy, you won a grammy
You won a grammy, you won a grammy

Don't think I want to be bothered at all
Maybe I'll just give them a call
I won't go through pomp and circumstance
Anyway, my music isn't fancy
You invite me to share my fame
I've decided not to play your game
Now the turntables goin' 'round and 'round

We thought you wanted to be a star
