Brian Wilson to receive NARM's Chairman's Award

Kudo to be presented May 12

Brian Wilson will receive NARM's Chairman's Award for Sustained Creative Achievement during the retail org's awards dinner at the Century Plaza Hotel on May 12.
Rachelle Friedman, NARM Board of Directors chairman and CEO of J&R Music World, said, "Since his first recordings with the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson's influence on the evolution of rock music has been profound. He is undoubtedly one of the most important modern composers, and his work continues to resonate with people all around the world."

Inglewood native Wilson co-founded the Beach Boys in 1961. The group epitomized the California surf sound, and forged more than two dozen top-40 hits. Its later visionary work included the 1966 album "Pet Sounds" and single "Good Vibrations."

After his split from the band, Wilson created such durable solo works as his self-titled 1988 solo album and 2004's "Smile," a rendering of the legendary, scuttled Beach Boys opus.

Previous Chairman's Award recipients include Garth Brooks, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, B.B. King and Smokey Robinson.

NARM's 2011 convention runs May 9-12.

Yeah. I think that planetoid named after him is bigger than his house.

So, that's the second award Brian's getting this year. Wonder how many more will come. In some form or another I think the Beach Boys should get one for their 50th year but I don't know what would be possible. A Grammy for The Smile Sessions ?

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

AGD hinted towards this possibility. He suggested that the SS box would be released not too long before Grammy time, to compete for the 'Best Archival Release' trophy. Come to think of it: I would really love to see the BBs box go into competition with the upcoming John Fahey 5CD box on the Dust To Digital label (his earliest years will be extensively covered). That'd be an aural feast if there ever was one.

Great to see another Fahey lover 'round here. I'd prefer a 15 LP (that's vinyl, folks) set to the Fahey Cds, as I'm sure would the Great Koonaklaster himself (although he'd actually probably prefer we forget all about that old stuff) but I'm sure I'll end up buying the damned thing. This is gonna be a hell of an expensive music year for me...

It's be a lot less expensive if you simply used the "Beatle Bob Matonis" technique
