I was AWOL when the Definitive Vocal Credits thread was hashed out, so I apologize if this was already covered.  But:

In looking through the DVC thread, I noticed that the lead on How She Boogaloed It is credited to Carl.  I'm sorry, but I would almost stake my life that the singer is Al.

Similarly, the "let the bees make honey" bridge of Let the Wind Blow is credited to Carl.  This may be a slightly closer call, but again I am sure that is Al.

Am I crazy?  Does anyone agree?  Has the statute of limitations for raising questions on the DVC thread passed?

Al and Carl can definitely sound alike (as can many combinations of Beach Boys), but sorry to say I've got to disagree with you on both.  Carl's vocals on the Wild Honey album are quite distinctive, and had an edge to them that I don't think Al possessed.

It would take a lot to convince me that HSBI is sung by anyone other than Al.

How about Bruce telling you it's Carl... like he did me when I asked him ?  Grin

I dont think Al could have pulled HSBI off. IN fact, I think Carl only barely pulls it off.

Sort of a hard question to answer -- I am by no means knowledgeable about vocalizing or technical singing terms.  To me the HSBI lead has a raggedness and nasal quality that say Al to me, not Carl.  Obviously Carl really let loose on his WH vocals, but even when he went craziest, like on the title track or I Was Made to Love Her, you can still hear the innate sweetness and smoothness of his singing that is absent on HSBI (a phenomenal song I really adore, by the way).

It sounds to me like the whole track of HSBI is speeded up; if the case, that would further disguise the vocals.

Anyway, if Bruce told AGD that HSBI is Carl, that's pretty strong evidence that I'm wrong.  I can be convinced on these things -- I believed for a long time that it was Brian singing on the fade of ADITLOAT, but I accepted that it was Al based on AGD's report that no less an authority than Brian himself said so.

Try "Al says it's Carl", then I might distrust my ears.

HSBI is definitely sped up, and by more than a semitone.  When you slow it down by around 5% it's pretty obvious that it's Carl singing.

It seems like most of the confusion in these "who sings what" threads come from the fact that Brian often sped up the final mix.

I admit - sped up (or slowed down) masters can be very ear-deceiving.  Will go away away test the 5% theory.  Thanks!

There are live soundboard tapes from late 1967 that circulate, and one has a rare performance of HSBI; if you listen there, I think you will see that it's Carl singing lead.

Plus, Mike introduces Carl as the singer on that song.  Smiley

The booklet for the 2-fer says it's Al, and we all know those booklets are 100% accurate!  Razz

AHHHH!  Not this again.

Yes, covered exhaustively in the Definitive Thread.  Carl, Carl, Carl, Carl, Carl...we have multiple confirmations from various inside sources on that.  Bruce, the live tapes, Alan Boyd...

Plus, I'm always baffled by people who insist it's Al...the second section is obviously Carl singing.  Al never sang like that.  We went into that part of it in some detail before...

Yeah it's definitely Carl. Not only does Alan Boyd, Bruce and the live tapes back it up, the liner notes say Carl too. Maybe you have an old edition or something sockittome but mine say "Carl".

I've got the '90 edition, so they must have corrected it for the '01 release.

And I'm assuming you got my sarcasm, right?
