And yours too, of course.
Nothing quite soothes my weary soul like hearing the Beach Boys sing unaccompanied, and I mentioned how I'd like to see a Stack-O-Vocals CD released in the "dream" thread, so I thought I put up my dream list.
I tried to go for things that haven't been done or even booted, but I had to leave a few on there because they're so pretty. I also tried to limit this to things that are technically possible in terms of what we have in the collection. And of course I assume that a lot of vocal only mixes have been made in the lead up to putting out the stereo remixes, that are in the can.
This would be a 2 disc set. I even made makeshift cover art for it once...
Disc 1:
1. Surfin' USA 2. Shut Down 3. The Surfer Moon 4. Do You Remember? (Yeah, I know, but Mike's vocal's kill me every time) 5. Don't Back Down 6. Dance, Dance, Dance (really want to experience this one) 7. I Get Around (not sure if this is technically possible, actually) 8. When I Grow Up (given the full stereo treatment) 9. She Knows Me Too Well 10. The Girl from NYC 11. Help Me, Rhonda 12. Let Him Run Wild (don't even need to do anything for this, already mixed) 13. You're So Good to Me (ditto) 14. Wouldn't It Be Nice 15. God Only Knows 16. Cabinessence 17. Do You Like Worms? (whatever is able to be mixed) 18. Brian solo Surf's Up 19. Smiley Vegetables 20. Little Pad
Disc 2 1. Darlin' (Not entirely sure if this is possible) 2. Aren't You Glad 3. How She Boogalooed it. (For Fun.) 4. Friends 5. When a Man Needs a Woman 6. I Can Hear Music 7. Time To Get Alone 8. Breakaway 9. Slip on Through 10. This Whole World 11. All I Wanna Do 12. 'Til I Die 13. You Need A Mess of Help... 14. All this is That 15. Trader 16. Disney Girls 17. Johnny Carson 18. Baby Blue 19. Their Hearts were Full of Spring 20. The Lord's Prayer
Now, I want to point out that these are not simply my favorite songs...but I've selected them because I think they highlight a lot of the Beach Boys best, most innovative, or most unusual vocal work.
I included You Need A Mess OHTSA, for instance, because it showcases the unusual double vocal and Blondie's rougher voice against Carl's. When a Man Needs a Woman could be almost any song from Friends, but I thought it showcases Brian's tender voice at the time with most BGs than some of the Friends tracks.
Disney Girls was selected because it's a pretty vocal arrangement, but mainly because Bruce has never got his own Vocals Only mix where he's on lead throughout.
Aren't You Glad and All I Wanna Do feature Mike's tender voice, displaying his full range as a vocalist.
I guess Dennis is a little overloooked as a lead vocalist on this dream comp, that would be a weakness.
But overall, the goal would be to give fans more of what they like, and hopefully also educate the general public as to what great singers the Beach Boys really were. Because they are, at their core, a vocal group...and deserve a CD showing how good of a vocal group they could be.
Anyway...it's the thought of hearing these and more that keeps me going, even if it will never happen.
