I dunno how many of you folks here have heard of this absolute Pioneer (yes, with a capital P).

Raymond Scott started out as a bandleader during the swing era in the 30s, playing very rigidly structured tunes that later found their way into Warner Bros. cartoons in the 40s.

He's most known, however, for his experiments in electronic (Manhattan Research, Inc.) and ambient musics (Soothing Sounds For Baby series). Have at it for this genius.

Suicide's made a nifty career copying him, no?   Tongue

I doubt Suicide ever heard his electronic music, it was unreleased until years after it was recorded.

I like Raymond Scott, and I think most people do, whether they know who he is or not.

Everyone here knows Powerhouse, but at the same time, they don't know its history.

I've been wanting to check out Manhattan Research for one time.
Anything genuinely different related to composition I can generally dig.

It's an awesome listen. Doesn't sound like it was recorded during the 50s and 60s, either. It sounds very much ahead of its time.

I have his best-of CD, it's all excellent. I used to listen to it while I delivered pizza.

Is that the CD of his jazz sides?

Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights.

That's actually not a hits CD, that's all of his studio-recorded jazz output. There is, however, a two-disc set of live performances and radio rehearsals available.

What about Scott's collaboration with Jim Henson, Limbo: The Organized Mind?

Very weird music. Interesting, but weird.
