I would love a Beach Boys show with them playing no hits at all. Wouldn't it be nice...I mean And My Dreams Came True! Although, I know they won't. I just hope to hear a lot of their "other" stuff on this tour. They have way too many great songs that shouldn't be ignored. What's the closest concert they've played with minimal hits in the past?

Probably this one, Honesdale, PA, August 17, 1963:

1. Surfin Safari
2. 409
3. Little Deuce Coupe
4. Runaway
5. Blue City
6. Farmer's Daughter
7. Monster Mash (Mike)
8. Movin N' Groovin
9. Silly Boy (Dennis)
10. Papa Oom Mow Mow (Brian)
11. Honky Tonk
12. Shut Down
13. Louie Louie (David)
14. Surfer Girl
15. Let's Go Trippin
16. Surfin USA
17. Johnny B Goode (Brian)

Encore:
18. What'd I Say (Carl)

12 non-hits from 18 songs - 67%

Nice! I've never heard of Blue City, Movin' & Groovin', or Silly Boy. Some of them covers I'm guessing? Thanks.

I don't think it will happen. They might build in a few rare songs, but as Mike mostly mentions Pet Sounds and Smile when asked about "rarities" in interviews and Brian seems to stick just to his own songs (and then in the last years not too many rarities) I guess it'll be like a Mike & Bruce or Brian show nowadays, which of course isn't bad. Al seems to be the only one wanting to go a little deeper (like Surf's Up, Sunflower, etc.) - I don't know about Dave and have my doubts about Bruce. IIRC Al was the one behind the unplugged tour in '93 so maybe he can bring in some suggestions.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Does that riff remind you of a certain Beach Boys song ?

I remember reading in Back To The Beach, Bruce saying in an early 2000's interview that we can just forget about it and just enjoy the albums. Maybe he's had a change of mind since then seeing the success of Brian's shows.

Mike mentioned a few weeks back that they're thinking about doing a well-balanced show: the inevitable hits and well-known album tracks plus "stuff for the fans" (or how he put it..), meaning lesser-known songs. But yeah, I guess it'll basically turn out like your average Mike&Bruce/Brian show (regarding set lists). Also, set lists and the percentage of lesser-known songs will vary between venues and countries. At least, that's the experience with Mike&Bruce/Brian shows.

I'm sure there will be a few lesser-known songs and maybe even a suprise or two at the Berlin gig.  Smiley

Didn't mean new album cuts by "suprises", I guess at least the new single should be a given.  Cool

I think it'll be a well balanced show, some don't realize it, but Mike and Bruce have really done some eclectic stuff with their setlists over the last few years and are amazingly willing to do some of the more obscure stuff.  I'd honestly say they'd be more up to do weirdo-favorite songs than Brian would!  So my point is I think the whole group will be willing to do some of the more album-cut stuff.

Why do you think that? From the M & B shows I've been to in the past few years, it's usually just a hit show with maybe two odd numbers like "It's O.K." At least in the states it seems that way...Brian's show on the other hand has had stuff like "Drive-In", "Custom Machine", "Til I Die", etc...

... but nothing from Holland... or 15 Big Ones... or Love You... or pretty much anything after Surf's Up...

Meanwhile, Mike & Bruce do things like "Bluebirds Over the Mountain".... "Getcha Back".... "Good Timin".... "Sail On Sailor".... "All This Is That".... "Disney Girls".... "Forever".... "Cotton Fields"....

I mean they're not doing it every show, but over the years Mike & Bruce have shown much more willingness to do strange, less popular songs than Brian has.  Not that it matters.  I was just making the comment that it's very possible that you'll hear anything you dream of on this tour.

Brian has done songs from "Love You."  He did "The Night Was So Young" at a few shows some years ago.  He's also done a few other rarities here and there.  I don't think Mike & Bruce have made a habit of doing unusual songs, either, just in front of certain audiences that might appreciate it.   The fans and promoters want the big hits.  I imagine that's mostly what they'll be doing on the reunion tour, with a few exceptions.
