I'm fairly new at downloading torrents, and I was wondering if somebody could help me out about something. I have about six completed downloads in my tracker. Under where it says "seeds" it says "0", but there is usually a number in parenthesis. I don't see any activity though. How do I know if I'm "seeding" a torrent file? I have clicked on the "start" and "force start" buttons, but it still says "0", and nothing seems to be happening. There is a certain website that won't let me download again until I upload a certain amount, so having people download from me would give me the ratio boost I need. I think?  Huh I'm using UTorrent, by the way.

Don't worry about it. When somebody wants to download the files then you'll seed automatically.

Yeah, but how do I actually know when/if somebody is downloading from me?

I don't know about Utorrent, but usually at the bottom of your program, it'll say upload/download and have a kb/sec associated with it.  If you see yourself uploading a significant amount of material, that's because people are downloading it from you.

I sometimes see "kb/sec", but it only lasts for about a second before it's gone again. It's like the download/upload keeps cutting in and out.

you've got to realize too that you may be downloading stuff not too many other people are interested in downloading right now.  So you may be trying to share the Bee Gee's live album from 1976 and everybody else either has it or don't like the Bee Gee's.  Personally I can't concieve how anybody could possibly not like the Bee Gees, but you get my point.  If you specifically want to 'seed' something, maybe download the newest Lady GaGa video, you'll have people constantly downloading from you and it'll help your ratio out.  Usually I think if it just shows uploading for a second nobody's actually downloading from you, it's just the program sending bits of information to trackers or something like that.

What are peers and seeds, exactly? I guess I don't really know enough to know if I'm doing things right. What does it mean when it says "0(5) seeds, and "0(7)" peers, for example?

The seeds are how many people have the entire thing.

So lets say you're looking for a 1976 Bee Gees live album.  Notice it's been weeks and I still remembered the hypothetical.

If it says "0(5) seeds" that probably means that the tracker knows there's 5 people with the whole album, but only 0 of them are online right now, or you're only downloading from 0 of them.

the peers would mean 7 other people have fragments of it and are trying to download the thing.  The higher either number is, I believe the better off you are.  Say they split the album into 1000 parts (I'm not positive exactly how it works, but for example).... you can download all 1000 parts from one of the seeds, but one of your peers may actually have already downloaded the first 100 parts.... so you can get also get some of those parts from the peer, etc.

It's a pretty neat little system they dreamed up.
