I think Brian was searched on his way in
"Um, Mr. Wilson, why do you have so many lighters in your pocket? You don't smoke, do you?"

He said that too. But I am sure he said both. Or else my brain is not functioning because of all the cocaine I have been snorting.

He can be seen throwing the tapes into the fireplace in the "American Family" movie. That settles it!

Total proof! I can't believe Andrew G Doe didn't catch that bit of historical evidence.

Incontrovertible evidence, to be sure.
In all seriousness, not to cry over spilt milk, but in the general spirit of perfectionism and ambition for greatness that inspired Smile, a certain amount of music was lost as Brian tried to re-record and improve on his previous efforts, the quotes from ear-witnesses about H & V coming to mind, among others. Impossible to quantify of course, but to me that constitutes one of the saddest aspects of it not coming to fruition at the time, and extends to what is available for this set. Every working version or fragment that was taped over or otherwise lost to history is a minor tragedy. What exactly do we know about this, based on available information? If only Brian remembered or wanted to remember these kinds of details, it would be fascinating.
