101  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Bob Dylan Thread on: April 16, 2008, 04:37:56 AM

8080, I have to admit I'm not familiar with "Tangled Up In Blue" from Rare & Unreleased 1961 - 1991. Is it live or a studio outtake?
It's a studio outtake. It's from the 'original' sessions (produced by Phil Ramone) for "Blood On The Tracks" at Columbia A&R Studios, NYC, September 12, 1974. He later re-recorded five songs in Minneapolis, and "Tangled Up In Blue" as we know it is one of them.

Personnel for the (stripped down) NYC version:

Bob Dylan -- Guitar, Vocals
Tony Brown -- Bass

Unknown additional acoustic guitar possibly:
Charles Brown, III -- Guitar
Eric Weissberg -- Guitar
Barry Kornfeld -- Guitar

I really like the version of "Tangled Up In Blue" on "The Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3, Rare & Unreleased 1961-1991" too.  A superb song.

Some cool pics there of Dennis!

Sadly no audio clips.

Does the photo gallery work for you Andrew? Cause I can't get it to work. I can only see the first (default) photo and then it wont let me click on any of the other photos.

Yeah it says on the page though "Check back here often for more updates and a special sampling of the incredible music from Pacific Ocean Blue and Bambu!" so hopefully we'll get a taster for it before it comes out

Yes, that would be great.

The whole site works fine for me. For everyone else who has problems with it, make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed.

A great story! And the last one left of the three sublime singers in The Band, a wonderful artist.

By the way, isn't his daughter on his new record too?

I've heard and read some good things about "Dirt Farmer", think I'm going to pick it up.
106  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: R.E.M.'s new album- fantastic on: April 07, 2008, 04:36:20 PM
I've only heard it twice so far, but yeah, it's definitely a lot more energetic (and compact) than their previous three albums. It has a lot more in common with "Monster", than with, say, "Reveal" or "Up". Call it The Return Of The Guitar.  Rock! Peter Buck must be a happy man.

Now show me the way to the next whiskey bar............

Don't think Rubin would be a good choice either, although I love his work with Cash.

I've always admired T-Bone Burnett's work, also a veteran, and a 'career resurrector'. But thankfully, no Don Was.
109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Dennis' tattoo? on: March 31, 2008, 07:59:17 AM
I was wondering if anybody here knows more about Dennis' tattoo? I know he had one on his (upper) right arm, but I've never seen a good picture of it. What kind of tattoo was it (the design)?

Just curious.  Grin

Thanks folks!!

New Order (except that last thing they did, without Gillian Gilbert)

I bought that album, and I tried, and I tried, and I TRIED to dig it....but I couldn't. They lost their edge. I love Gillian though....she really contributed to the feel of the music with her amazing 80's keyboarding and synthesizing....did I mention that I love her?

Their last two albums actually were recorded without Gillian, "Get Ready" (2001) and "Waiting For The Sirens' Call" (2005). But I agree, especially "Waiting..." is an uninspired mess. "Get Ready" has some good songs on it, but it's too long, and nowhere near as good as their earlier work with Gillian. But they split up last year, a wise decision......

I forgot to mention Simian, their first album "Chemistry Is What We Are" in particular (from 2001). "One Dimension" was a minor (radio) hit. Very nice as well.

And The Bees!! How could I forget The Bees?

Is that the same Simian that gave way to 2 of its former members forming the techno act Simian Mobile Disco?

I think The Bees are called A Band of Bees over here in the states.
Yes, that's the same Simian. They split up in 2005, and two members formed Simian Mobile Disco. One of them, James Ford, (co)-produced the last Arctic Monkeys album.

And yes, The Bees are called A Band Of Bees in the US.

More modern day bands/artists (besides the ones mentioned above) that have listened to The Beach Boys (post 1966) more than once:

The Besnard Lakes
Panda Bear
Caribou
The Apples In Stereo

Alfred Hitchcock's "Music To Be Murdered By".

All doors and windows are firmly shut.

I love the album he did with Ryan Adams ("Songbird"), I think it was in 2005.

Besides The Beach Boys, I'm still listening to another 'outlaw': the great Lee Hazlewood, plus various other albums (Van Morrison's "Veedon Fleece", R.L. Burnside's "A Ass Pocket Of Whiskey", Harry Nilsson, The Jayhawks, Alex Chilton, Scott Walker etc. etc.).

124  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Chronology of Dennis Wilson's released recordings with the Beach Boys on: February 08, 2008, 05:01:29 AM
WIBNTLA is a Beach Boys track from 1970 or '71. There are NO Beach Boys recordings on the Dennis Wilson POB/Bambu release that is coming in May on Sony. It is all solo Caribou era DW from '75 to '79 and its fantastic. There I've said it again...sigh. The people who are putting out the forthcoming DW solo release have zero rights to the Beach Boys material. BRI on the other hand has had every opportunity to include WIBNTLA on a BB"s release for many many years...and they have chosen not to. Direct your request for this song to Brian, Mike, Al and Carl's estate because they (BRI) are the ones who own it's release rights. Thanks, I feel better now.

 Cheesy

I think that now finally an interesting and important part of the DW archives are going to be opened (apart from the fact that POB gets it's well deserved re-release) makes many a fan wishing for more. Overhere they would say (Dutch saying): "Give them a finger, and they want to take your whole hand!"  Grin

Haha, can't deny that Dennis had really beautiful 'hands'....  Wink

Pretty fancy place he has/had here in Vlodrop, been there a couple of times. Not difficult to spot where all the money was going. Still, R.I.P.
