1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / New Stereo mix of "Be True To Your School" on: May 30, 2021, 03:58:06 PM
The Eric/Hit Parade/Complete 60's label has just released four new CD's, and one of them contains a new stereo DES mix
of the single version of "Be True To Your School".  Sounds terrific to me, but take a listen:
The sample is track 23 on this page...

2  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Brian on SNL 1976 on: May 30, 2021, 03:16:16 PM
The Internet Archive has a literal goldmine of anything you can think of.  There is an archive of a huge number of
SNL episodes, and I was surprised to find this complete episode today.  From November of 1976, and hosted by
a young Jodie Foster, and while watching it, at the 12:00 minute mark is Brian doing "Back Home" from 15 Big Ones.
While I'm sure most here are familiar with this, it blew me away.  Brian sounds great and looks healthy.
And the picture quality is such that you can watch full screen.

Boy, this picture of Dennis (posted above)may be the best photo I've ever seen of him.  Remarkable...

Plus, I just noticed the entire hour long program is actually on youtube.  I hadn't seen it since
it originally aired, and watching it, it's actually better than I remembered.  Plus, Carl IS on a lot
of the sessions, which surprised me.  Especially on "Don't Worry Baby" with Lorrie Morgan.

I recall Carl being on many of the tracks in the videos, but not "I Can Hear Music", which I thought was odd.
I'm one of those who really liked both the CD and the doc, but this is my favorite on both, the whole group is
there, but no Carl.  But Kathy is sensational..

I don't see a mention of the latest issue of ESQ, as I usually do upon release...so here goes. Featuring a spiffy new sessionography by yours truly...
I got my copy of this a few days ago, and it was a great read.  Since you mentioned your sessionography, I want to thank you for
all of the details.  And, as others have said, it would be great if you put out a complete BB sessions book.  It would be the
ultimate resource for those of us wanting that type of session info.

I just ordered it and it said 20 copies left.
Yep.  I just went back there and now they have 8 copies in stock.  So it went from out of stock
to back in stock.  Ordered it.  Thanks for the update.

I just went there to order the single issue on Sunflower and it says out of stock.....
9  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Eric Records new stereo \ on: April 15, 2020, 02:17:47 AM
How is this done?  Digitally separate the different frequency ranges of a mono recording, and then lay them throughout the stereo spectrum?
That's basically correct.  Each voice, each instrument, etc. is separated using high end spectral software, then each 'stem' is remixed into
a new, true stereo mix.  The Both Sides Now website has a section where the technical aspects are explained:

It is really quite good.  There are phasey things going on but it's remarkably low on artifacts.

Da Doo Ron Ron sounds...weird.

Possibly, but "One Fine Day" sounds sensational.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Eric Records new stereo "Surfin' Safari" on: April 10, 2020, 04:32:46 AM
Eric Records released five new CD's with a remarkable amount of state of the art DES stereo.
On this CD, they have "Surfin' Safari" in first time stereo.  To me, it sounds perfect.  Listen to the
sample here, it's track 24:

DVR'd it and just finished watching it.  While it certainly was excellent, they didn't detail every song, including "Caroline No".
I got the feeling it was edited down to an hour, when it easily could have been two hours.  But it was great seeing the interviews
with Hal Blaine (RIP) Tony Asher, Linnett and others.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: New stereo mix of “I Get Around” on: April 19, 2019, 05:32:49 AM
There seems to be some confusion here as to what DES (digitally extracted stereo) is.  It has nothing to do
with Duophonic or separated frequencies. It is a way to separate, using state of the art software, each element of an
original mono recording into seperate tracks.  Each instrument, each vocal, background singers, etc. all now have
their own tracks.  Basically, multi tracks have been created from the mono.
These are then remixed by professional audio engineers into true stereo.  Some of the tracks on the new Eric CD's
over the last two years are jaw dropping.  They duplicate the original 45 versions, in perfect sound quality, but now
in stereo.  I have all of their releases from the last several years, and they are amazing.
Go to their website (in the original post) and listen to some or all of the samples.  All that said, the "I Get Around"
on the new CD is NOT DES, just reconstructed stereo. Here's a track from one of their releases from last year.

The Kalin Twins "When" from 1958.  Only in mono until this true stereo mix using DES was made last year.

To hear the stereo best, listen through good speakers or headphones.

14  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Mark Linett Thread on: July 19, 2016, 03:55:54 AM
I'm not Mark Linett (unfortunately) but I did find a few names here that may be of interest. Scroll down for Cry-Baby:

http://www.blastersnewsletter.com/newsletter/amer47.htm
Thanks!  The entire interview with Alvin regarding "Cry Baby" is exactly what I was
looking for.  He names those musicians used on the four rockabilly tracks, plus himself
and James Intveld on guitars.  I would never have found this out without the link
you provided, so thanks again......
15  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Mark Linett Thread on: July 18, 2016, 08:47:53 AM
Mark, I don't know if you are still here, but if you are I have a non BB's question you
may be able to answer.
I noticed recently that you engineered the soundtrack recordings for John Waters' 1990
film "Cry Baby". I love the movie, and bought the soundtrack back then, and the music, and
the recording quality, to this day, blows me away.
But my question is, who were the studio musicians on those recordings?  I know that James Intveld
and Rachel Sweet did the main vocals, but nowhere have I ever seen credits for the musicians, anywhere.
I've been leaning toward the Wrecking Crew since 1990 due to sensational tight sound this group
achieved, but it could be an entirely different group (Dave Alvin, etc?).
If you recall, or have access to the session sheets, any info would be GREATLY appreciated.
Or possibly a link to that info, which I've never been able to find.  THANKS!
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / Ask The Honored Guests / Re: The Stephen Desper Thread on: March 30, 2016, 09:57:30 AM
Stephen, thanks for all of the terrific study videos, especially the "Sunflower"and "Surfin' Hits" ones,
really sensational.
About two weeks ago I started a thread over on the Hoffman board about the "Surfin' Hits" video.
It wound up being only one page, but you might want to check it out and/or comment over there.
(One of the users there had some, well, "disparaging" remarks that you might be interested in. I completely
disagreed with him.)
