Not the grocery store, but about half an hour into NPR's The Splendid Table, they exited a segment about a vegetarian holiday meal with, you guessed it, "Vegatables." Not sure of the version though: it wasn't BBs/BW.
It could've been Laughing Gravy (Jan & Dean).

Right now, for real... listening to Smile while cooking. Busy doing other stuff too, so running around the house whilst the cauldron bubbles. Run down to the kitchen to check on things, and find I've singed something on the stove. Mrs. O'Leary's Cow comes on. Smoke alarm goes off. Me waving dishtowels at the alarm. Christmas cards flying off the shelves. TOTAL MAYHEM. Pulse slowly returning to normal now... Maybe Brian was right about that song being cursed!

I love seeing how many times Surfin' Safari gets released through sketchy labels as compilations.
One came through today: "Fantastic Music for Christmas (All the Greatest Tracks)" on the Classic Mood Experience label.
1. Heads You Win, Tails I Lose 2. Ten Little Indians 3. 409 4. Little Girl (You're My Miss America) 5. Moon Dawg 6. Surfin' 7. Cuckoo Clock 8. Summertime Blues 9. Chug-A-Lug 10. Surfin' Safari 11. County Fair
I've never understood how this happens, and why it's always Surfin' Safari.

I knew Al was born in Lima, Ohio, but I didn't know until I read James B. Murphy's book, Becoming the Beach Boys, 1961-1963, that he'd lived in New York State. He went from part of first grade through part of third grade in Rochester, then completed third and fourth grades in the West Irondequoit School District near Lake Ontario, not far from Rochester. The Jardines moved from New York to San Francisco in 1952 and then to Hawthorne in 1955. As for their "California accents," this Wikipedia article, "North American English regional phonology," https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_English_regional_phonology, may be helpful. It's rather long, I admit. Thanks for the answers! Al should sing about New York after SC/BH (Ohio) & California Saga. Shall check the wiki page. Didn't Al sing the demos for Back Home (1970)? If so, he shouldve sang lead on it for 15 Big Ones! "I'm goin' back this summer to Ohio..."

Just listening to my music at the moment... Buddy Holly: "Rave On", "Every Day", "Heartbeat" The Iveys/Badfigner: "Maybe Tomorrow" Emilio Pericoli: Al Di La Herb Alpert: "This Guy's in Love With You" Sammy Davis: "I've Got to Be Me" Billy J. Kramer: "Bad to Me" The Kinks: "A Well Respected Man" Roy Orbison: "Dream Baby" Spencer Davis: "Gimme Some Lovin'" Del Shannon: "Runaway" The Beatles: "Mother Nature's Son" The Zombies: "This Will Be Our Year", "Hung Up on a Dream", "Gotta Get a Hold of Myself", "The Way I Feel Inside" (Actually, covering Odessey and Oracle would be amazing!)Bobby Darin: "Beyond the Sea", "If I Was a Carpenter" J. Frank Wilson: "Last Kiss" America: "Sister Golden Hair" Neil Young: "Heart of Gold", "Old Man" ELO: "Livin' Thing", "Strange Magic" Faces: "Ooh La La" George Harrison: "Don't Let Me Wait Too Long" CCR: "Someday Never Comes", "Lodi" Frank Sinatra: "My Way" The Guess Who: "Laughing" Paul McCartney: "That Would Be Something", "Heart of the Country" THIS!! I knew I would strike a chord with at least one person! They are in bunches because that's how I was listening to it: 60s, 70s/80s, single artists. I threw in "Al Di La" because of the reference at the end of one of the SMiLE "Psychedelic Sounds" tracks.
