Hi Peter, greetings from Gerhard (Germany); it really has been a long time!!
277  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Fun Fun Fun 45 credit on: February 02, 2008, 12:13:21 AM
You guessed right, it was corrected on the second pressing. The album was released about 6 weeks later, so it had the correct credits.

Even Dennis' "He's A Bum" was covered by Irish singer Cherry b/w "He Rides With Me"  Crashed Car Records # 91 (1984)

I don't think so.
He did a nice solo 45 though, released August 1971 on the Reprise label (1030):
Music is Freedom (co-written by Jack Rieley) b/w Don't Know Why - no BB involvement.
281  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: did the Ballroom influence the creation of Harpers Bizarre? on: December 12, 2007, 06:58:46 AM
definitely the 45 version - much more daring as far as vocals and instrumentation goes.

Yes, there are some great Waronker productions from the late sixties, collaborations with Parks as arranger, too:
Mojo Men (Sit down I Think I Love You 45)
Randy Newman's first album (The Beehive State on 45 was a different version as well)
Everly Brothers  (T for Texas 45)(Empty Boxes 45, written and arranged by Ron Elliott)
Ry Cooder (first album, with One Meat Ball as a highlight)
Sal Valentino (Alligator Man 45)
Arlo Guthry (Running Down The Road album/Valley To Pray 45)
Tom Northcott (his 45s are great as well, especially Donovan's Sunny Goodge Street - WB7051- with tons of balalaikas and accordions in it) - a blueprint of the "Burbank Sound"

Re: Cotton Candy Sandman
I checked my Canadian 45 again (WB 7172) it says "arranged by Perry Botkin Jr." In the Sundazed reissue booklet the label of the US 45 is pictured (WB 7172) but there it reads "arranged by Nick De Caro" - another mystery to solve. Maybe Lenny knows - he produced both versions.

five years old, but great. The Dutch love him.
284  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: did the Ballroom influence the creation of Harpers Bizarre? on: December 11, 2007, 10:11:50 AM
"Cotton Candy Sandman" seems two different versions to me. The 45 besides being speeded up, has the accordion missing and the strings are sometimes substituted by clarinettes etc. Even though it was not metioned on the Sundazed CD reissues, the 45 was arranged by Perry Botkin Jr. while the album version was arranged by Nick De Caro. My favourite from 4 is "There's No Time Like Today", only simple songs can be that beautiful. The same goes for some of the Boettcher/Millennium demoes.

who also produced Peter Noone's album "One Of The Glory Boys" for Bruce's shortlived Johnston label in 1982, but with far worse results.

Hi, Doc
287  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: American Spring - who wrote what? on: November 29, 2007, 09:56:04 AM
wasn't he? He got co-writer and co-producer credit on the record.
288  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Moby Grape is FREE on: November 12, 2007, 10:49:23 AM
not the first time and unfortunately not the last time that lawyers kill the music. It's them who rule the music business.
289  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Happy Birthday Johnny Rivers! on: November 11, 2007, 07:32:25 AM
"The Group" seems to be a Zekley solo effort (Warner Bros. 5840 - August 1966), he wrote, arranged and produced both sides and sings lead as far as I can detect.
"The Fun we Had" sounds a bit too barebone to me, rather like a demo, B-side is much better, Spector-style as was his co-written song "Missin' My Baby" by Clydie King (Imperial 66139).
Thanks for mentioning the other records which I hadn't heard of. Two of my favourites are
The Giant Jellybean Copout "Awake in a dream/Look at the girls" (Poppy 504) Jimmy Ryan of the Critters was behind that. A-side follows the structure of Good Vibrations, but isn't a copy at all. B-side is kind of The Association go Busy Doin' Nothin'. Also worth picking up is
The Full Treatment "Just Can't Wait" (A&M 878) great Harmony stuff ( a Buzz Clifford song).
290  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Happy Birthday Johnny Rivers! on: November 08, 2007, 02:11:02 PM
Yeah some of the Zekley stuff is really great.
I recently got the 45 by The Visions "Small Town Commotion/Keep Your Eyes On The Sun" Uni 55042, the A-side is just amazing, time changes all over the place - quite daring production.
The other 45 by The Visions is "How Can I Be Down/Threshold Of Love" which seems to be a Zekley Solo record, I can't detect his vocals on "Small Town", both seem to be studio projects.
Best thing for me - besides The Yellow Balloon - is The Group "Baby Baby It's You/Can't Get Enough Of Your Love".
He also borrowed the intro from "God Only Knows" for The Fun And Games non-LP single "We" (Uni 55128) - also a good one.
Sad to say that is later stuff is quite bad: Silver, Platinum and Gold "LaLa Love Chains/Yes You Are (Tutti Fruiti) WB 8057 from 1974 is the same disco trash Curt Boettcher was into when he did "Music Music Music" or "Here Comes The Night".

Didn't Terry Melcher produce "Tambourine Man"? Yeah, you guessed right - I collect his stuff, too - but that another story...
291  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Happy Birthday Johnny Rivers! on: November 08, 2007, 10:22:48 AM
Only got one of his singles: "Secret Agent Man" (Imperial 66159) from the great TV series starring Patrick McGoohan - song was written by Sloan-Barri, who did a lot of amazing stuff in the mid sixties - it's in my collection because of them.
292  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The second coming? on: November 06, 2007, 08:37:13 AM
careful - you might get lost in the BW/BB univers, but a lot of fun is guaranteed.
293  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: One more question - when was \ on: November 03, 2007, 07:10:16 AM
Ian - thanx for the corrections.
Maybe it's of interest that the 45 was noot only released in England, but also in Holland (Stateside 5C006-92147 with a title sleeve) and in France (Stateside 2C006-92147 with a Picture Sleeve). Anybody knows of other releases?
294  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: One more question - when was \ on: November 03, 2007, 03:01:14 AM
A sweetening session for Lady was held Jan 26, 1970 with Michel Colombier as the session Leader (Teras, Our sweet Love and Take a load were done at the same session). The exact release date of the single was Dec 4, 1970. Dennis sdang an accustic version of Lady live at the David Frost Show  February 25, 1971 (broadcast March 24, 1971).

An update was planned a couple of years ago, but it never came to pass. Other intersting sections of the book: Radioshows and discographies of Bruce, Van Dyke Parks et al.
297  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson on Bill Medley´s new album on: October 23, 2007, 07:18:46 AM
There was the duo version with Tammi Wynette (sorry if i spelled her wrong) and the German language version called "Ganz Allein" (= All Alone)

loveandmercy... I think the 45 stuff is really interesting. I've got all those on your list except the Mark Richardson side; I'm told it's of his lesser exciting efforts. Here's some more from my collection:
Goldebriars: Shenandoah/Pretty Girls...
Goldebriars: I've got to love.../Castle on the Corner
Summer's Children:The Summer's long/Everybody's been Talking
Association: Along comes.../Your Own Love
Association: Cherish/Don't Blame..
T. Roe: Hooray fro Hazel/Need your love
Mallory: That's the way.../Many are the times
Summers Children: Milk and Honey/Too Young to marry
Association: Standing Still/---
Mallory:Take my hand/The Love Song
Roe: Winters Day/Kick me Charlie
Roe: Sing along.../Nighttime
Roe: Sweet Sounds/Moon talk (great!)
Bootiques: Mr Man of the World/Did you get your fun
Jameson: The new Age/Places and Times
Jameson: Right by my side/Jamie
Millenium: It's You/I just want (PS)

We're in 68 now so I stop for the time being.

Two which are still discussed.
The Looking Glass: Silver and Sunshine/If I never love again (Vailliant V 750) no credit but it sounds very boettcheresque
The Hep Stars (pre ABBA) Musty Dusty/It's been a long long Time (label says produced by Steve Clark,  but many of those are supposed to be Boettcher productions. They did a whole album on Chartmaker with a lot of CB tunes in 1968
The Sandy 45 seems to be definitely non-Boettcher - still a very nice one though.

The Two goldebriars albums have recently been rereleased on Cd by Collectors Choice with a lot of bonus tracks from their third unreleased album.

@loveandmercy - there just a few Boettcher collectors around, but it's extremely difficult to find those super rare and obscure singles he did as a producer in 1965/66. For a nearly complete discography check www.curtboettcher.com.
I'll get back to you with some of my goodies when I've got some time to spare. Was just able to pick up an obscure one last week:
Lou Berrington and the African Kamp
The Kwella/The Kwella Stroll
Parkway 114
where he makes fun of a new dance craze and teaches the audience the steps. Must have been fun to make.

Great record, but totally overpriced. Picked it up a couple of years ago for $20. Available on CD: 1. Rev-Ola's Ballroom Collection and 2. Sundazed Magic Time. Still looking for some other Boettcher goodies though, especially one he did for Our Productions.
