Van Dyke Parks did the strings for that track (Tuna...) and a couple of others. He was also involved with "Young Modern".

I prefer "Do Ya" by the MOVE
179  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What are you listening to? on: January 24, 2009, 02:23:26 PM
THE MOVE - Anthology 1966-1972 (4 CD Boxed Set) - great!!

The French "Wild Honey" is worth picking up.
At least  the copy I owned roughly twenty years ago had a faint voice coming from the off at the start of side 2 saying "ST 2 - 2859".

@pearlfisherdavid
Hi David, great to have you on the board. Just got your latest album "Up With The Larks" a couple of weeks ago. Great stuff on it just like on all of the ones before; especially like the title track, London's In Love and Blue Riders...

183  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Looking Back With Love - The 1st solo album of a Beach Boys' member on: January 11, 2009, 01:08:16 AM
Calendar Girl: The arrangement is pretty much the same as on the BB outtake (from 15 Big Ones ?).
For collectors who wanna have them all:
France: Running Around the World/One Good Reason (w. PS)
Germany: Looking Back.../One Good Reason (w. PS)
Germany: Be My Baby/Teach me Tonight (w. PS)
184  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Dave Dee Dies (65) on: January 09, 2009, 10:42:55 AM
They often appeared on German TV (Beat Club), I especially remember them for their funny clothes and their first couple of 45s (Hold Tight, Hideaway). They were quite big in Germany 66-68. Dave even cut some solo 45s.
185  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Holland - did they change sides? on: January 09, 2009, 06:10:58 AM
What surprises me the most is: all of them are printed in... The Netherlands! Strange is though that at the time of release I've never heard nor read anything about this. Let be that I saw them being sold. I bought all of my EPIC-pressings either from a German of a British seller.

Not that surprising really, at least nearly all CBS vinyl for the German market was pressed in Holland since 1979.
186  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Japanese version of BWPS and Blondie Chaplin 1977 solo album reissue on: December 23, 2008, 11:53:15 PM
While THE FLAME has a very 60s/Beatles touch the BLONDIE CHAPLIN album is much more rock'n'roll - good album though. I think the WOUNDED BIRD label is a legal enterprise.

189  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: One for the experts Which LP came first? on: December 19, 2008, 02:42:18 PM
the twofer booklet also states Oct 19 for Concert.
190  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: One for the experts Which LP came first? on: December 19, 2008, 08:28:01 AM
The number should indicate that Xmas was first, but Keith Badman states the release dates as follows:Concert Oct 19, Xmas Nov 9th.
Xmas was recorded in July 64, Concert in Dec 63 and August 64 (according to Brad Elliott)

I hope that helps to sell some more copies.
192  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Review of Jump by Van Dyke Parks on: December 19, 2008, 08:12:10 AM
Yes, all ages. The stories of Brer Rabbit by Joel Chandler Harris were apapted by VDP for a couple of Jump books with great illustrations by Barry Moser. I've got one here called " Jump Again", probably vol. 2 of the bunch, with the sheet music of "Opportunity.." at the end. Has a different title though "In Love For a Day".

ad 1. First version 1983, 2nd edition 1985 (I doubt that they were of Japanese origin)
194  Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: This Whole World - The Complete Beach Boys Singles and EP Cover Collection on: December 11, 2008, 06:00:04 AM
I own two copies exactly for that reason.
195  Smiley Smile Stuff / Book Reviews / Re: This Whole World - The Complete Beach Boys Singles and EP Cover Collection on: December 10, 2008, 08:30:03 AM
Totally agree, although the English translation is a drag. Many more PS 45s have surfaced in the meantime. Unfortunately the book sold quite poorly, so there won't be a second edition, which is a shame. Great job, Manfred and Christian.
196  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Van Dyke Parks on: December 09, 2008, 01:27:58 PM
dig his songcyclish arrangement on Jackie DeShannon's version. Thanks Christian!!
197  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Van Dyke Parks on: December 08, 2008, 11:07:40 AM
ex-band mate (Greenwood Singers) and future Jefferson Airplane producer Rick Jarrard recorded the song on a 45 (Chattahoochee 700), he sounds like a mid-sixties Dylan produced by Phil Spector.
There's another version on 45 by a band called Fault Line on RCA 9771, but i haven't heard that one yet.
198  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Post 1965 BB music more popular today in the US then any other time? on: December 08, 2008, 07:40:07 AM
You're right there, Alex, these albums are great.
199  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Has anyone watched this DVD? on: December 08, 2008, 07:35:52 AM
If I remember correctly, I liked the doku quite a bit when it was first shown on German TV in 1997. And don't worry it's NOT entirely about the Manson connection.  So the title is misleading indeed.
