101  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Gary Zekley - As good as the Beach Boys? on: May 16, 2011, 02:23:27 PM
I'm a fan of Zekley but he's nowhere near the talent of BW or even Jan Berry. He has more than a few awesome songs (fun we had, don't be gone long, other towns other girls) but he never seemed to be able to get past that silly sort of lyrical theme and move towards songs with emotion. I do love  (and own tons of) his stuff though!
True!
Here are my top five 45s (non-LP stuff only):
The Group - Baby Baby It's You WB 5840
The Visions - How Can I Be Down? UNI 55031
The Fun & Games - We UNI 55128
The Visions - Small Town Commotion UNI 55042
The Young Stuff - Poor Boy Canterbury 514

Their album are rather patchy, if any try "Here They Come", " Midnight Ride", " The Sprit of 67" and " Revolution" (all produced by Terry Melcher).

Try STAN CORNYN's book about the Warner Brothers Music Group

Tracking down Usher productions has become something of an obsession for me. He produced a group called The Peanut Butter Conspiracy, which though not incredible, is quite decent. He also worked with Chad & Jeremy on two albums, they seem to have been a real pet project of Usher's, but I really don't care for them. He also put together a really weird spoken word album, The Astrology Album, which tells all about the different signs.

If anybody knows any other good Usher related projects from the later half of the 60s, please share.

The Wackers - Wackering Hights
The Wackers - Hot Wax
(both early seventies)
Danny Cox - Birth Announcement (Double Album)
Danny Cox - Live at the Family Dog

Hundreds of tracks as arranger, producer and player on other people's records. For details check my last update on www.vandykeparks.com/works

Amazing website, btw. I have frequented it quite a bit for lyrics/updates/etc.
True, but as I said, it has gone to sleep since early 2010, except for a couple of tour dates.

Hundreds of tracks as arranger, producer and player on other people's records. For details check my last update on www.vandykeparks.com/works which includes everything (I hope) up to the beginning of 2010, when Jan Jansen quit as webmaster of the VDP site. Since then nobody seems to take care of it.
108  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BWRG - Wow on: October 05, 2010, 01:37:18 PM
I hope he get VDP in for some of the arrangements for the Disney album (assuming than Van Dyke would be interested, of course).

Didn't VDP do a lot of arrangements for Disney movies? If he was brought in, therefore, it might not be a "re-imagines" project.
At least he was involved in the Hal Willner project.
109  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: VDP Presents... Mighty Sparrow/Esso Trinidad Steelband on: September 07, 2010, 10:10:01 AM
There are 2 singles VDP was involved in that are really great that are also in a caribbean flavor: Goldie Hawn-Pitta Patta  (he's credited as musical director) and Dino Martin-Sitting in Limbo (producer). Has anyone heard the single The Andrew De La Bastide Steelband-Proud Mary single he co-produced?
Shame, no - I've been looking for it for years

Esso....... non-album 45 prod by VDP: Superstar WB 7532

Has anybody heard The Trinidad Tripoli Steelband 45 Apeman (org. by the Kinks) WB 7476 (1971)? VDP produced that one too.

That's the same as on the album no?

I would give anything to get hold of Superstar.... shame it wasn't included on the reissue. Was it the Carpenters/Rita Coolidge song?

a. probably
b. No, it's Webber/Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar b/w Singer Man (from the album)

The article can also be found in "Record" - a collection of Siegel' s writings, which was published in 1972 (Straight Arrow Books, San Francisco). That's where I read it for the first time. By the way most of the other stuff in the book is quite good as well.

Is that a cover of the Ian Tyson song?
Yes, it is.
114  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson v Curt Becher according to Gary Usher on: July 20, 2010, 02:17:25 AM
I think his vocal arrangements are his trademark.
If you listen to Gene Clark's The French Girl/Only Colombe bare bone versions as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of his first album and listen then to the Sundazed 45 with Curt's backing vocal arrangement (performed by his usual group of singers) you will see how much good this arrangement does to the songs. It's a shame that the 45 wasn't released at the time.
Most of his stuff as arranger/producer only came out on 45s - the best stuff is from 66/67 when he still was with OUR PPODUCTIONS (Jacobson & Tansley, The Plastic People, Something Young, Susan Carter, The Mother Love, The Oracle, Action Unlimited etc. etc.)
The Moses Lake 45 on Together is worth a mention as well, not to forget Eternity's Children.
After the demise of the Together project in 1970 Curt went into hiding. When he reappeared his music had changed radically - to the worse unfortunately. His solo for Elektra is a pleasant singer songwriter album, but nearly all C.B. ingredients are missing.
115  Smiley Smile Stuff / Other Solo Albums / Re: Blondie Chaplin - Blondie Chaplin (1977) on: July 19, 2010, 03:26:06 AM
I've always liked the album, but it has been quite a whilw since I've listened to it.

a great album, but it's hard to explain why.

I only listened to the album twice; can't relate to it.

Unfortunately there's no website dedicated to Terry's work as an artist and producer.

True, but there is... SpectroPop !

Unfortunately there's no website dedicated to Terry's work as an artist and producer. There are over 80 45s he produced as well as numerous albums - some obscure stuff among the singles e.g. Jimmy Boyd's cover of the Bee Gees' "That's What I'll Give To You" (VJ 686/Feb 1965,when hardly anyone knew Barry Gibb!)) or The Osmonds "Mr. Sandman", which sounds like "I Get Around" (MGM K 132817/ Summer 1964)

What 'Black Jack Davey' is doing there only VDP knows... It might be a comment on the dying of the folk craze, or a hundred other things, knowing him.
Steve Young is singing that bit, isn't he?

"Sheriff..." and "Kustom..." were released as a 7" on the Sundazed label (candy colored vinyl with PS) in 2003 (Sundazed S-158) - nice one!
