COMMENT to  SteveMC:

You will find answers to "How was Deirdre recorded? Was it done quickly? How did Bruce and Brian collaborate on that one?" by going to my website, http://swdstudyvideos.com.  While there, check out Recording The Beach Boys and click on page one. Read about Sunflower and then eventually the recording details of "Deirdre."

Wow.  Glad you kept a journal and have a good memory.  I really like how the bass vocal is louder on this and also the processing on the lead vocal. Thanks!

Would love a whole docu just on Sunflower.

How was Deirdre recorded? Was it done quickly? How did Bruce and Brian collaborate on that one?
Thanks.

COMMENT:  With some of the songs being discussed on this website, now might be a good time to re-visit the second in a series documentary:

Brian Wilson Songwriter 1969-1982

It is posted by a reviewer, Justin Plank, on YouTube. It tells an accurate story of Brian during this period (69-82). Besides myself, a number of people contribute facts and view points, some about songs rarely spoken about.

If you haven't seen this British made documentary for a while or not at all, it's worth your time for a reviewing. (Part 1 is a review by Justin Plank)

When an old buddy, Peter Leinheiser, approaches, Wilson blurts, "How's your sex life, man?"

Leinheiser sputters, "I ride a bicycle – it's hard to pick up women on a bike."

"Oh," Wilson says, adding, "Well, you look good. If you were a chick – I don't know what I'd do!"

Classic!

I suppose this is the part of the film where you tell me I have a small willy and I live in mother's basement --it's not true. My gf happens to have a large vee-j-j and my folks live in MY upstairs. So you see it's about perspective. What I mean is that you learned of all this and the nefarious details in real-time. I just learned about it mostly this week. In real time you may have posted some harsh things. Having said that, this thread(and others), if you read the whole thing, helps one connect the dots to wtf went on and is going on.  In real-time maybe your perspective was different and perhaps mine will be in a few months.

Christ almighty if that's fine irish wit please let me never visit that country in my lifetime. sh*t like that is what gives this community a bad name. Calling out stupidity and petulant behavior is one thing, but wishing some people that kind of ill will is going way too damn far.

I need a break from this place.

Agreed. Totally uncalled for.

The truth is rarely called for --that's kind of the issue.  But go ahead and edit it. Ask the mods. Enjoy.

Peace & Love, Peace & Love as Ringo would say.  Grin

Was that necessary? Perhaps you should modify that and then I'll do the same.
Maybe or you could see it for what it is and appreciate my fine Irish wit.

Someone at PSF did a version of "Melt Away," which reminded me how cool a song I think it is. So, having not recorded in like 6-9 months (wow) and with distractions out of the house, I decided to throw together a quick version, myself. It's primarily just piano and lead vocal, though there's a bit more to it, especially at the end. But it was also pretty quickly arranged and recorded, mostly first takes, so forgive any blunders you catch. Try to convince yourself they're charming.

Nice piano. Vocals need a smidge of work.
10  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Pet Sounds Forum on: February 12, 2017, 12:32:15 PM
Well, I did a fast tour there and can't help to notice two things. Several posters there seem to be convinced that joining "there" means to be banned "here".
Er... Captain? Cincinnati Kid? Jay? Bringahorseinhere? Bubbly Waves?
Worse, there I have read, several times, sentences like "people are better here" or even less flattering (for us) variations on that. Really folks? People are "better" on PSF? Do you think life is so easy?

Well they're attempting to build a strong community but sadly their member list is full of banned Smiley members (ones who slandered, harassed people, hell one guy even threatened the family members of the administrator of this forum!) so it's obvious they overcompensate with pats on the back and they have to publicly reassure themselves that "the people are better here" because the facts of reality don't back that up. They have to do this to market the board to new members - otherwise the reality would scare most people off. Guitarfool, Billy, and LePage rid this forum of the filth that was dragging it down - and the other forum opened its arms to what Smiley Smile rightfully threw away.

The honeymoon is nearing it's end there - tensions occur and this fan community is complicated as hell (and this shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone). I'm sure idiotic board politics will come up there thanks to members wanting a Mike Love coddled forum (like what was attempted here)...and it will continue to drag that community into a downward spiral.
Well, you nailed it.

I have never been harassed here yet over there they are paranoid about everything. The few decent people over there seem totally helpless as it all crashes in around them.
It takes awhile to fully understand what's going on.  They cannibalize themselves.  CKid is a spy though, he hates you all.
11  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds Overrated? on: February 12, 2017, 12:12:08 PM
No.  There are few albums  that I can turn to for the last 26 years and still be emotionally moved by it.  I am still riveted every second when listening to it.
And for me, as a musician, it(along with their other material) was a gateway drug to exploring music theory in a more in-depth way.

I'll probably get quite a lot of argument about this, but I'll say it anyway. I think that the belief that everybody over on PSF are evil is toxic, and I believe that PSF believing everybody on the SS board are evil is also toxic. Somewhere down the line this board split into two factions, with everybody against everybody else. I can't even muster up enough energy to be pissed off anymore. I'm just incredibly sad. SmileySmile used to be the number 1 Beach Boy's website on the internet. But not any longer. In the last day or so I've come to believe that everybody banned starting with Andrew Doe to today should be allowed to come back for 30 days. If those 30 days end without any "incidents", then another 30 should be added, and we would just play it by ear from there. Of course, more than two mods would be needed to help keep an eye on certain people.
I can tell you he has a few minions & nut huggers that use the same MO over there. They flood you with PMs to curb your freedom of expression. They are an utterly disgusting group of people. However, there are some good people over there that are lost in the shuffle not affiliated with "the expert".  And of course some good folks are on both places., well, really only kds.

Well, I read and post (rather infrequently) on both boards, am not affiliated with "the expert" or anyone else over on the PS board, and have never received even one PM to curb my freedom of expression.

I'm am bummed, however, to learn that SteveMC, whoever he is, has excluded me, Desper, and others who post on both boards, with the exception of kds, from the "good folks" category!

Personally, I'd like to see peace between the two boards. Doesn't mean various members have to agree with each other, but I don't think bashing all the members of either board achieves anything of positive consequence in the world of BB/BW fandom.

Sorry custom machine, I don't know you but perhaps you can build a custom machine and merge the best elements for your own enjoyment.  But if you're sympathetic to that I'd like to continue not knowing you.  LOL I kid, I kid. Nice meeting you.

Nice "meeting you" as well.
I can already tell you're a "wonderful person" like your friends in Kokomo-istan.   Grin

Your hypocrisy is stunning.

I can tell you holding AGD's nuts so tightly is not your path to redemption.

No redemption needed whatsoever in his case. He reveled in busting balls whenever the opportunity arose so payback time has arrived and is overdue. And cuddling up to myKe luHv is a further indication of the kokoDoughster's desperation.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

19  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Paul McCartney Solo on: February 11, 2017, 02:13:14 AM
I'm no expert on his solo material but he has a number of great songs, IMO.

Lonely Summer lamented the fact that the Henry McCullough tribute thread turned into a thread about Paul's post Beatles career.

I found the Paul discussion to be interesting, so I decided to start a thread just on him.

Great frankly, I've always thought Paul needed a collaborator.  He had that with John during The Beatles' early run.  But, especially in the last 25-30 years, it's really been evident in his solo career.

I would definitely rank Paul's solo catalog behind John and George.  With Paul's catalog, it's more about quantity than quality.

On the plus side, we're extremely lucky that Paul still tours.  And even more lucky that most of his set is filled with Beatles and Wings songs.

And, that thing he did with Kanye West and Rhianna.....what was he thinking?  Paul, you were 1/4 of the greatest rock band that ever existed and 1/2 of the greatest songwriting duo of the 20th Century.  You're a legend.

He's right about Syd. They way Floyd gave him this shaft yet gladly use his over-arching image to make $$ is a little sickening...and yet I like some of there later stuff and enjoyed Gilmore's last solo record.

Gotta hand it to Mike. He's often in the middle of these major trends like seeing him with Maharishi and The Beatles.
Now he's with Trump and a bunch of bikers at a POW rally. Pretty cool.

Gotta pass on him as VP though as we really do need to eff with formula in this case  LOL

23  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My Ultimate Theory about Smile and the Beach Boys on: May 16, 2016, 02:50:26 PM
That's a logical fallacy.
Argumentum ad populum– concluding an argument is true simply because lots of people think it’s true. We see this on commercials all the time: “9 out of 10 doctors recommend Acme Brand Toothpaste,” or “3 million Brand X Customers Can’t be Wrong! Buy Brand X Today.”

Other's people's/critic's ratings doesn't actually prove it's quality but I respect that you love SMiLE.

//rock onwards dunder

You do realise that Metacritic took an aggregate review score of Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE and The SMiLE Sessions, 7 years later. They scored 97 and 96 out of 100 respectively.
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My Ultimate Theory about Smile and the Beach Boys on: May 16, 2016, 02:42:17 PM
I just want to say I'm very impressed with your analysis. In totality, I also never liked Smiley Smile or Smile Redux though I always loved Wonderful with Carl's vocals and With Me Tonight. Surfs Up is incredible.

Pet Sounds is the masterpiece, fully realized.

Hello there fellow travelers. I haven't posted here in a while, but some of you might remember me as "Fishmonk,"

Truth be told I haven't listened to The Beach Boys much in the last 2 or 3 years, been busy with other things. And with blogging on other, more interesting parts of the internet. But recently I was induced to once again take up the topic of band, their successes, their failures etc. Now that I have a little more perspective on the band, and am perhaps able to be objective about them, I feel as if I have reached my Ultimate Fan Theory regarding why Smile didn't work.

Smile sucks. When you get right down to it, it's just not that enjoyable to listen to. The material has never been presented in anything more than a barely adequate way. I have listened to every fragment a million times, and truth be told, most of them aren't really listenable in any meaningful sense. Many of the experiments are utter failures, despite their nigh mythical status.

I feel that Brian's primary aim in creating Smile was to impress some of his friends. The only problem with that: Brian's friends considered him to be a bit of a fool, and listening to many of them today, it's clear they never respected him very much. I've emailed with Loren Schwartz, he's an asshole. And given Van Dyke Parks' later-day ingratitude towards Brian Wilson, it's hard not to catch a whiff of some long-festering resentment about his person. He was always a bit of a mooch, creatively. He associated with many talented musicians and songwriters, but never amounted to particularly much. As bad as Smile is, Song Cycle is much worse, and Van Dyke has struggled to eek out a legacy using it.

Van Dyke is an old Southern aristocrat at heart. One gets the impression that much of his artistic and public persona is stolen from Truman Capote. One often hears that he was a musical prodigy, and that he played violin for Einstein as a child. In his mind, he is the true creative, not Brian. He was the genius, not Brian. Brian wasn't smart enough to be a genius. And I think that's a sentiment that some of Brian's Smile-era friends shared, that Brian was a bit of dunce. It is almost embarrassing how hard Brian tried to impress these people.

Brian's friends during the Smile Sessions were some pretty insufferable people. Brian wasn't hanging out on the Strip, with Buffalo Springfield and Love. He surrounded himself with industry people and wannabes. They were pretentious. I mean, can you imagine wanting to be friends that badly with Curt Boettcher or somebody like that? If you ever listen to the discography of someone like Gary Usher, there's a really weird vibe of sanitized mysticism. It's incredibly lame stuff. There's a novelty factor that makes it enjoyable, sure. But is it 'cool'? No way.

Here's what I really think happened during the Smile era. Brian became enamored of a bunch of hipster-losers, and then he paid them all to be his friends. They all thought he wasn't truly capable of 'getting it,' in the way that they were, and came to deeply resent his influence upon their lives. Brian, with all his might, tried to tune in, or whatever. He tried to 'get it,' he wanted to be hip. But he's just too naive a person, and the whole scene that he wanted to be a part of so badly was simply too cynical in its constitution for him to ever enter very naturally into it.

Really what I'm saying is: these people Brian courted possessed no substantive beliefs other than an affected contempt for everything 'uncool'. Brian wanted to be cool, and they probably thought it was fun to perpetually label everything that he did 'uncool' in order to torment him. With Smile he wanted to make something that appealed to these people, this was his true and core audience. Smile was never made for the world at large, it was made for his immediate circle of dependents. Commercial success was only once factor that Brian thought might impress these people, because they leaned towards being industry types.

The problem came about because Brian really looked to them for help work shopping ideas, and they frankly weren't good at that, despite all being promoters and producers and wannabes.

Consider this: We take other people's words over Brian's. Why is there an Element Suite? I ask you. Because one of Brian's friends intimated that there was. These aren't Brian's ideas, they were often concocted out of discussions. Brian asked them "is this cool? what should I do? what's cool?" and they fed him a constant stream of lame brained ideas. At the end of the day, you can construct anything out of that. It's a fool's errand.
