I wouldn't be too surprised if there is an excellent multi-track recording in the vaults. there was a lot recorded for the "In concert"-album and maybe "River song" was in one of those concerts...

The two live versions I have are from the Nassau Coliseum, and Hartford CT.  Both shows were professionally recorded.
In reference to the Hartford show, are you talking about the 1973 show? The one where Dennis told a Nixon joke? I'm pretty sure that's an audience tape. At least the version I heard. The audience is very loud...to loud for a professional tape. Especially in the intro. Jack Riely(sp?) is talking about almost drowning last time they were there(?), and an audience member can CLEARLY be heard screaming "This time we're gonna get it on!".

I was wondering, how many Beach Boys versions of this song exist on tape, as done in concert? The only version I have heard is from Hartford, 1973. The sound quality is pretty darn good for an audience tape. Are there any other live versions that sound better? What is the "best" version to have?

Not sure where it's from (on the '78 Oz tour, natch), but I've heard Carl sing the world's worst version of "Darlin". Pitch, timing, phrasing, key... none of them were even close.
I read somewhere that Carl fell into the drumset during Darlin' at one of the Australian shows. How you could wind up all the way across the stage into the drumset when you're supposed to be singing at the mic, I have no clue.   LOL

Do any other songs from the Sydney show circulate?

I was told that a sixty minute film from Brisbane was discovered in the 1980's.  I have a questuion about that Perth 14th show audio tape. Are any other songs besides "God Only Knows" and "Good Vibrations" circulating? I have asked that question sevberal times, but I've never been able to get an answer.

Andrew, were ALL of the shows from the Austrailian tour filmed? Do any of the films still exist? Well, I know that at least one Melbourne shows has been bootleged.

I have a question about band decisions, but I'm not sure where to put it. I guess in this topic is ok. My question is: right before Carl died, did he make any decisions to resign "leadership" to Mike? I'm just curios what he would think of all the legal sh*t between Al and Mike. Carl spent most of his life fighting for peace in the band, but it seems that the sh*t hit the fan the day that he died.
6308  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if Dennis had lived? on: March 02, 2008, 02:09:28 AM
What went wrong with Dennis? I mean, from what I've read it seems like Dennis was fairly in control untill around 1977. Before that year, it seems like he could have either taken drugs or left them. Maybe it was that famous Beach Boys fight at the airplane terminal? Dennis was quoted as saying that he would always remember that day. He said "The Beach Boys broke up on...", whatever the specific date was.

I skipped to the bottom because this thread's been done to death.
Show some respect. You didn't have to click on this topic if  you've read all of this before.

Plus, he was smoking alot too. That definitely didn't help the matter in the whole scheme of it.
I think Barbara Wilson's comment in Endless Harmony nailed it...when she said she felt Dennis actually died a couple of years before his body did. His life force seemed to be fading and the voice was another symptom of that. And Dennis knew he was done, he told a number of people he'd be gone in a year, and he was. You can see it in his eyes in photos, you can see it in Carl's eyes when he looked at DW. A dozen trips or attempts to detox and rehab and he never lasted more than two days in any of them. I think the premise of this thread is flawed. I just don't think it was an option, he'd already lived much longer than he should have. He beat the odds in a big way just to get to 39.
I have a feeling that you're right. I've always said that Dennis would not have lived to see Live Aid. Even if he had gotten sober.

We are forgetting one MAJOR factor. Brian Wilson is not british.
6312  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What if Dennis had lived? on: February 28, 2008, 08:06:45 PM
I read in a website once that Dennis had "several" operations to remove polyps and scar tissue from his throat. According to the website, Dennis always started drinking again against doctors orders.
6313  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / What if Dennis had lived? on: February 27, 2008, 11:32:49 PM
I was thinking about this the other day. What if Dennis had gotten sober, and stayed sober? I know that with his personality, he and Landy would probably have to worked out. But what if Dennis had met somebody that COULD have helped him? Would he have been allowed back into the group? Do you think that by 1983, it was to late for him to "make amends" with the group? The thing I'm most curios about is the problem with Dennis's voice. If he had gotten sober, and gotten back in to shape physically, would his voice have been salvageable? If he had quit the booze and drugs, would his voice have returned? Would there have been some kind of operation to help fix it? What if his voice had been permenantly ruined? How would that have affected his position in the group? Would he have been "banned" from singing on stage, and in the studio?

Virtually anyone here given a chance to be a part of a Beach Boys recording would jump at it.

I agree, you can't really blame Stamos for anything. I even like his version of Forever. It probably just shouldn't have been released under the Beach Boys name. Cause now it's officially a 'remake' and people will always keep comparing it to the original. But I think it's good for what it really is - a cover version.
There was a promo radio cd single released that credits it as "John Stamos featuring The Beach Boys".  Roll Eyes

I think it is just because all bands have seasons.

There is truth in that, I guess what get's me frusterated is something like the fall 1993 tour that shows that they COULD still be a great band. It's just very rare that they were all that engaged by then.
I guess that's what I'm saying. It's just annoying to see the band being "lazy" and using their backing band more often, when they could have still been a very good band if they had only tried hard enough. Think about their studio work too. Still A Mystery is a great song, but  group infighting made them eventually take the "easy way out" by doing the Stars and Stripes album as their new "product".

To conclude this typically lutherian long-winded post a bit more succinctly: I doubt it mattered much to anyone, inside or outside of the band.
[/quote] That's exactly the point that I'm trying to make in this thread. It's the fact that The Beach Boys themselves didn't care enough, that bugs me. When I watch the 1991 Japanese broadcast, it bugs me to see Carl just standing there smiling, not seeming to care that HE is the one who should be singing Don't Worry Baby. It's not about members of the BB's backing band singing lead. It's the fact that Carl, Al, Bruce and Mike didn't care enough to stop it from happening. I think THAT hurt the group more, as a whole.
6317  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: My theory on what helped \ on: February 21, 2008, 10:42:15 PM
. I can see what you mean though, when you pay to see your favorite group and singers, you want to see them sing the songs though instead of a back up band. It kills some of the excitement  a little.
Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of what might have been going through Carl's head as he watched Adrian Baker sing "Don't Worry Baby". I know that Carl's voice changed a little from the 80's to the 90's, but I just think that he shouldn't have given up so easily. If Carl couldn't sing DWB in it's original faster tempo, they could have done it in the tempo that they did for the In Concert album from 1973. It would have given him a little more time to transition from normal voice to falsetto. I just think that "giving the songs away" to people like Billy, Adrian Baker, Bobby Figuroa, and Matt Jardine was kind of a cop out. I can understand having to rely on people like Matt for some insanely high notes like the "Jai Guru Dev" ending to "All This Is That", but not for complete songs.
6318  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / My theory on what helped "kill" the group on: February 21, 2008, 09:59:15 PM
Aside from the cheerleaders, the group fighting, and Carl's general lack of interest after Dennis died, I have one more theory on what helped to destroy the Beach Boys. This seems to not get talked about much. Starting in the 1980's, members of the backing band were allowed to sing complete songs, over "original" BB members. I know that Billy sang Sail On Sailor in the 1970's, but people like Adrian Baker were allowed to tour and sing lead on "Don't Worry Baby" on a nightly basis. It should be noted that while this went on, Carl was still actively touring. I'm thinking of the Japan TV broadcast from 1991, specifically. Why was Adrian Baker allowed to destroy "Don't Worry Baby", when Carl could have easily done it much better? I think that this may have increased Carl's lack of caring anymore, as far as The Beach Boys were concerned.

My copy does the same thing. I don't think it's a skip though.

I'm a little confused about something. Is the "complete" Bambu album going to be issued with POB? Or just Bambu outtakes? I've read on here that some tracks that are going to be issued are previously unbooted tracks. Will these make up the Bambu "album"? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, will there be things on Bamboo bootlegs that are NOT going to be on the reissued cd?

To be fair, Brian didn't write Sloop John B. None of the Beach Boys did. The arrangement maybe, but not the words.

I was going to make a separate topic for this, but I guess it can go here. How long did Carl's "problems" last? Was the Australian tour pretty much his rock bottom? Or did it continue for the rest of the year?
6323  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1978 Carl and Brian P.M. magazine interview on: February 10, 2008, 08:23:16 PM
We were at that Oakland show, sitting out around second base. Long hot day barely describes it. People were worn out by the time the Boys came on, and it didn't help when Brian tried to sing In My Room.  Oh my goodness. Mike made a valiant attempt to blame "cousin Brian's" problems on laryngitis but the crowd wasn't buying it.  It was a little sad, knowing Brian was up there trying his best to please the audience when he probably wanted to be anyplace else at the tine. Carl had a cast on his leg.  As I recall, instrumentally the band sounded real good for the most part, but some of the singing was a little off.  Les Chan - help me out here - didn't they play Lady Lynda for one of the first times?  I never knew about the taped interviews.  Those would be interesting to see.  All I know is I finally got to see Brian live in person, playing bass like the old days, after waiting 15 years and that meant a lot even under his circumstances.  And my wife got to see Dolly Parton so all in all a good day.  The only Day On The Green we ever attempted., even when our other fave Boz Scaggs headlined.  Too much for one day.
Thanks for the story.  Grin In the P.M. interview, Brian can barely speak, so I don't doubt that he had at least a little laryngitis. Mike probably made a bigger deal out of it than it actually was though.

I remember this TV show- these interviews were shot backstage in May 1978 at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA.  The Beach Boys headlined one of Bill Graham's "Day on the Green" concerts that day, and it was quite an... interesting lineup: the Beach Boys, Linda Ronstadt, Elvin Bishop, Dolly Parton (!) and Norton Buffalo.

It was a long, hot day.
Did Brian perform at the show?
6325  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1978 Carl and Brian P.M. magazine interview on: February 08, 2008, 08:16:02 PM
Brian was also going through his divorce at the time, right? The thing i'm most curios about is where the performance footage comes from. You can see Brian playing bass throughout the entire concert footage.
