1  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "The Beach Boys Story," produced by Unistar Radio Programming, 1993 on: July 06, 2010, 05:19:56 PM
Is anyone familiar with this radio program that is available on 3 CD's?   It is 3 hours long, includes 43 songs, interviews, and supposedly "rarities".  Is it worth owning?

Thanks.

El Coyote restaraunt... the location of the last meal for Sharon Tate and her three houseguests.    Next time I visit L.A. I am going to take in a few of his fave locations.  Maybe I'll get lucky and bump into Brian and exchange hello's!  Now that is atop my bucket list.
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boys Stereo Remixes on: May 24, 2009, 10:15:15 AM

There are 2 versions of She Know me and When I Grow Up in the box set and ITunes does not identify the stero mix versions.  Do you know the track numbers in iTunes of the stereo mixes?  Thx.

itunes has the collection set us as the individual discs are in the actual CD set - the two original mono 45 mixes followed by the alternate versions (which are original stereo versions, stereo remixes, backing tracks, etc).  The stereo remixes of of WIGU and SKMTW are therefore tracks 3 and 4.

Thanks JeffRetro!

What a bummer that She Knows Me in stereo is only on a US box set of singles!

Hit the iTunes store!

6  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Pet Sounds AF Gold re-issue on: April 29, 2009, 10:43:21 PM
I have had the AF for a few weeks now and it is indeed wonderful sounding. took a few listens to start hearing the increase in detail and overall appreciate it. with the HDCD, there isn't much difference, if any during playback with or without decoding. from what i can tell at least. i made a copy for my car, which contains the HDCD data, but it still sounds great.
i like it much more than the DCC disc that Steve Hoffman did years ago.  it's is definitely more balanced. even with the slight dropouts more noticeable on the AF, it's completely worth it. You really get the sense of the faders being adjusted at different moments, etc.
pick it up now if you can, i'm sure the price of used copies will go through the roof like the DCC has for many years!

Your reccomendation put me over the top.  I just bought the AF for $32 on E-Bay.  Can't wait!!

I found mp3s of the track in my temporary internet files folder, then copied them to my music.

Thanks for this awesome tip!!

What is the better cd to have the 1993 Gold or this new 2009 mix?  What are the pros/cons of each? Thanks.

At the end of the daily ESPN sports talk show Pardon the Interruption (PTI) , Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon always close with their reccomended t.v. viewing for the evening.  Tony reccomended "Watch the genius Brian Wilson on Jay Leno".  Michael came back with "A genius? I thought Brian Wilson was a Beach Boy". Tony replied "What?  You can't be a Beach Boy & and a genius?".  Way to go Tony!!

Brian is scheduled to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday September 3rd.  Any guesses on what his song selection will be?

I am going with "Good Kind of Love", though "Forever My Surfer Girl" would not surprise me.  Thr Venice Beach narrative would also be cool.

Thanks Bicyclerider.   With all the BB historical knowledge I have observed on this board, I am surprised that more information is not known about this topic.
12  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Unsurpassed Masters... what's the story? on: September 23, 2007, 03:13:17 PM
Would someone please enlighten me on how the Sea of Tunes Unsurpassed Masters series came into being?  How were the original studio tapes attained?   What producer/engineer decided which takes to include/exclude?  Are they illegal bootlegs?  If illegal, was production shut down and was there prosecution?  How were they originally sold and how many were sold?  I occasionally see them posted on E-Bay, but half the time E-Bay removes the item before the 7-day listing is over.

Thanks to anyone that has some or all of the answers.

Good Morning Judge and Dreadlock Holiday are my favorite 10CC tunes.  Always interesting music and lyrics.

16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Purchased my first Beach Boys album in 2006... and I am 48! on: August 19, 2007, 04:45:16 AM
I'll share my story tomorrow, but have a quick questions...what was the first album you bought?

The Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary cd/dvd was my first.  My most recent purchase, 3 weeks ago, was the M.I.U./L.A. 2fer.  Despite the wretched reviews of these albums, I actually enjoy a number of the deep cuts... Full Sail, Baby Blue, Hey Little Tomboy, My Diane, Kona Coast.   Is there any album after L.A. worth buying?

I look forward to your story...
17  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Purchased my first Beach Boys album in 2006... and I am 48! on: August 18, 2007, 12:39:56 PM
But in the last year, I have purchased 31 Beach Boys cd's (quite a few 2fers) and 6 Brian Wilson cd's.  I have always loved music and owned many albums, cassettes, then cd's over the years, but for some reason never a Beach Boys album.  I've always liked their hit songs and Good Timin' will always remind me of my college days.  I would have to say that in the last year, 90% of the songs I listen to on my iPod are by the Beach Boys and I have 7,000 songs on my iPod, of which about 750 are Beach Boys/Brian Wilson.  I have absolutely fallen in love with their songs!  Whenever I bought a new album, for me it was like a new release, where I had never heard most of the album cuts.   I own all of the Beatles catalog and I previously thought they were untouchable for the volume/quality of their music for my tastes.  The Beach Boys are now right up their with them for me!

I saw them (Mike/Bruce et al) at Branson, MO last month from the fourth row center and really enjoyed the show.  My wife went with me, but had no real interest in them.  She ended up enjoying the show and commented that she never realized how many hit, catchy songs the Beach Boys played.  I stuck around after the show and got Mike's autograph after the show.  The next time Brian tours the states, I will not miss it.

To bring an end to this rambling, how many of you were around during the Beach Boys heyday, yet did not fully appreciate them or never got into their music until later in your life?

p.s. I just discovered this board and it is more interesting than most of the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson books I have been reading.  Thanks to everyone that contributes.
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surf's Up Lyric Help on: August 16, 2007, 06:48:22 PM
I always heard it as "wipeout, wipeout" - which makes a crazed kinda sense - until I heard the vocal tracks isolated out. It's "bygone".
What Smile collection contains the isolated vocal track?

19  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Surf's Up Lyric Help on: August 16, 2007, 02:44:38 AM
What are the whispery background vocals saying at :12 and :23 in the first part of Surf's Up?  Sounds like "Wake Up Wake Up" or something like that.  These words are not included in any lyric 's for the song that I have found.  If anyone has insight into this, please let me know.  Thanks.

This is the "Good Time" appreciation thread. I love that song, especially when I listen to it in the context in which it was created, with other early-'70s recordings. I love Al's and Brian's voices. I love how it's goofy. I love the cheesy organs. I love the horns. I love the percussion. I love singing along with all the parts at once (or thinking I am doing so until I realize that's impossible and maybe I've had too much to drink and am actually massacring the song).

"Good Time."

It needs your vote. Vote yes for "Good Time."

Yes. Yes.

I also enjoy the low key "Hey" with 7 seconds left in the song.
