76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was the Beatles break-up the real turning point for Brian? on: March 20, 2009, 08:44:08 AM
I would argue that vocally, Brian's falsetto was the sine qua non of his commitment to the Beach Boys -- and it's all over Sunflower but nowhere to be heard on Surf's Up.

This is an interesting idea that I had not thought of before.  The three albums that followed Sunflower (Surf's Up, So Tough, and Holland), where Brian's falsetto is obviously lacking, are the albums where the Beach Boys were viewed as returning to "hip"; not to mention these albums sold better (I think) than Sunflower (Brian's last great effort as semi-leader).  While a lot of this is undoubtedly due to their improved live shows, they still gravitated towards a more hip sound.  Maybe Brian realized that his signature sound (falsetto voice) wasn't needed or wanted by the public anymore, he didn't perform live, Desper was gone, and others were producing and writing....so f**k it and just give up.   Add coke indulgence and paranoia, topped with Murry's passing, excessive smoking to sound like Randy Newman (i.e. hip and masculine) and it was all over.....well the old Brian anyhow. Smokin+ 3D= Sad

California Feeling w/ Carl Wilson lead vocal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wpYkAfNaUQ.

If you look up the user's videos, he has a whole bunch of other rare Beach Boys songs uploaded.

Great find!

Is this Rocky Pamplin on lead?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wNvJS_Pfx4&feature=channel_page

At first I thought it was Brian.  But the more I listen to it I think it might be Rocky.  Then again, I have no idea what Rocky's voice sounds like.

Who knows if he had given up cocaine and smoking it may have gone back to normal by 1975.

Do we know when Dennis started using cocaine?  Was it in 73' after Murry died?  Seems a lot changed for he and Brian at that point.

Actually, I think Audree talked out of the side of her mouth too.  At least when she was older.  I recall from one of the biographies where she's interviewed that she spoke out of the side of her mouth a bit.  Maybe its on that side of the family and Carl and Dennis take after Murry in that regard.
82  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1981 up at Bellagio... on: July 11, 2008, 07:44:33 AM
I don't think Carl would've left The Beach Boys to join Brian because of $$$$$$. That was always the driving factor that kept the individual beached boys coming back to The Beach Boys. Actually, if Carl had lived, it wouldn't surprised me if Brian went back to the Beach Boys....

Hmmm......I have always wondered though, if Carl had lived, and Al and Mike's relationship had turned sour enough for Al to leave, and Brian did his thing as he's done, (Al teams up with Brian for shows), would there be more $$$$$ seeing Brian, Al, and Carl or Mike, Bruce and Carl?  Of course that would really hinge on whether or not Al left, which is unlikely.  He probably would have put up with Mike as long as Carl was in the band.  But if he didn't, I think things would have gotten interesting.  If Carl did join Al and Brian, who would have the better right to the name "The Beach Boys"?  Three original members (including two Wilson's) or one original member and a 60's add on?  Perhaps a judge would have given the name and rights to Brian, Carl, and Al?Huh?

All BIG 'what ifs', but interesting to ponder.

Born and raised in San Francisco, CA, then Monterey, CA for 10 years, back in SF (five miles south of SF actually).

The website lists David Crosby and Steven Stills as contributors.  Does anyone know what Crosby and Stills contributed?  Vocals?  Would love to hear David sing with Al (Brian too for that matter).
85  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Current Record Collector-issue on: June 26, 2008, 01:21:16 PM
Regarding Mike's comments...

My take on it is that Mike rarely (if ever) can give an opinion without mentioning some sort of indifference "he" had with it (either POB, Smile, GIOMH, BW88 etc) or how he would have done it differently, or some sort of shortcoming.....unless he had direct involvement (i.e. Warmth of The Sun, Kokomo, and Endless Summer).  He always seems to have a wall up where he can't hide his feelings (JEALOUSY).  I do understand how he must feel, and sometimes feel he is crapped on unnecessarily, but here he should have been bigger than that and said something like...."I think Dennis was a great song writer and this album reflects that. He had a big heart that is obviously reflected in his songs and his arrangements.....I am extremely happy for him and his family for this success and wish it would have happened sooner...." or something like that.  He should be blown away and happy for his cousin, instead he points out Dennis's shortcomings as a song writer.

Even if you don't want to come off this way, or don't necessarily feel all of that, its the "classy" thing to do.  Mike Love and class are not often used in the same sentence (if ever) and this is another example. In fact I feel he had a perfect opportunity to gain some respect from the anti-Mike crowd with this statement.

And its a bummer that Bruce is starting down this same path.  He used to be so generous with his compliments.....now he too appears to be hyping himself in his comments about other peoples achievements.
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / In Bloom on: June 25, 2008, 01:39:35 PM
I haven't been able to track down In Bloom's website to see if there are any comments/announcements etc. about the POB re-release and just simply to see what's new with them.  Did they disband?

For those not aware, In Bloom is a three piece band that includes Justyn Wilson (Carl's son) and Carl Wilson (Dennis's son).

This is truly great to witness and as a listener, experience.  Lets hope more of his unreleased songs see this treatment.

88  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson podcast - Episode One on: June 21, 2008, 04:52:38 PM
Has the 3rd part of this podcast been posted? I don't think so, but I could be wrong.   If not, it seems that there has been a long delay since the 2nd segment (May 30th).  Now that the album is out it would be perfect timing for them to release the 3rd and final segment.

If I'm not mistaken, it looks like Paul is holding two carrots.  Maybe for the Vegetables sessions?
90  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Vocals on \ on: June 15, 2008, 10:30:37 AM
I've seen numerous discussions about when Brian's voice really changed, and I don't know if anyone has a real, definitive answer. The unreleased "Rollin Up To Heaven (Hard Times)" dates from, I think, 1974, and it is different by then. But he is singing pretty well in the early '70s. So it's narrowed, I think, to '73 or '74. I have no doubt someone will happily correct me, though, if I'm wrong.

I think Brian still sounds good on "Rollin' Up to Heaven (Hard Times) and he sounds like the old Brian in 1973's single with Jan Berry "Don't You Just Know It".  I think it was late 1974/early 1975 that he decided to chain smoke cigarettes, which ended the youthful Brian voice for good.
91  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Velvet Underground fans... on: May 27, 2008, 01:00:10 PM
The band 'Yo La Tengo' played the role of VU in a movie called 'I Shot Andy Warhol'. See Wikipedia.  Not sure if this is from that movie.

Anyhow, 'Yo La Tengo' are huge VU fans.  You can hear the influence in their music.  The bass player in this video clip (the only one that you can get a good look of) looks a lot like James McKnew (bass player for Yo La Tengo).

Its page 166 and it looks to me like thick shag carpet.  He is sitting in a recliner-like chair (next to sofa) in front of a coffee table.   I don't ever recall hearing he had his living room furniture (other than piano) in the sandbox.......although who knows this is Brian we are talking about.

Speaking of Cabinessence, did the Beach Boys ever perform it live?  If so which years?

96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Monterey Pop Festival...What If? on: March 30, 2008, 02:29:10 PM
So if you want to re-phrase the scenario that started this thread as, "how might Monterey have turned out if the BB's released SMILE?"...then you've got to think yes some of those things like new clothes and backing musicians might have happened...maybe.

You are right.  "It's all a What if?"

My initial intentions were for these criteria to be assumed (Smile not shelved, willingness to try other outfits etc.) .....my bad, I should have been more clear.

I guess I was wondering if they did make changes X,Y, and Z would they "The Beach Boys" have been able to shed their surf, hotrod image with their new sounds, a different stage appearance, larger stage band with fuller sounds, etc?  Would that have been enough? Or would they always be weighted down by their earlier music.

I use quotes on "The Beach Boys" because the name itself doesn't exactly jive with the new direction Brian was going.  I think Brian knew that Monterey was going to be big; in terms of exposure and mingling with other bands from all over.  If I had to guess, I'd say he knew the Boys weren't going to come over very well with their old hits and that they didn't have the time or energy to rehearse some of their newer sounds, so screw it.

97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Monterey Pop Festival...What If? on: March 30, 2008, 10:53:59 AM
This probably has been discussed at length in older threads and its all a big "What if", but I want to discuss (or re-discuss) the idea of the Beach Boys performing at the Monterey Pop Festival.

"IF" they had decided to play....what would the reaction have been from the crowd and the other bands?

I think their reception would have depended on multiple factors.

(1) Their set list (Good Vibrations, Pet Sounds stuff, Smile stuff - no car or surfing songs);

(2) Their appearance (striped shirts....NO);

(3) Who played (Brian with the group as well as other studio musicians (horns, strings, to get the full sound, etc.), and

(4) Where they played in the line up.  Meaning, better to follow The Mammas and Pappas, Simon and Garfunkel, as opposed to The Who, or Hendrix. Or maybe not...if they sound good then maybe it wouldn't matter.

(5) Their ability to pull off a decent performance of these songs, meaning lots of rehearsals to get their chops up (i.e. not like the Hawaii 67' shows).

So, what songs would they/could they play? Assuming (as headliners) they played ~5-8 songs, and assuming they had backing musicians could they do the smile stuff?

My picks:

Our Prayer
Heroes and Villains (cantina version)
Vegetables
Cabinessence (probably tough to play live, but man I think it would have blown peoples minds if they could pull it off)
Pet Sounds
Sloop John B
God Only Knows
Good Vibrations
Surf's Up (Brian solo on piano)

So, assuming they had some of their more progressive tracks well rehearsed and down pat, backing musicians to fill out the sound, and  they performed the songs well (good vocals etc..), how would it have been received?

99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson biopic on: March 06, 2008, 08:22:42 AM
I've said this before, but I think Alec Baldwin would be a great Brian (40+).......(years added/taken away with makeup).  The hard part would be finding someone that looks like a young Brian.  Billy Baldwin as Dennis, hell even Stephen Baldwin as Carl.  They're brothers and all resemble each other and with the right makeup they resemble the Wilson's....especially Alec and Billy IMO.  Check out pics of them on Google for your own opinion.
100  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / "The Wall" and The Beach Boys on: February 29, 2008, 03:59:09 PM
Just listened to Pink Floyd's The Wall this afternoon. I was thinking about how it would have sounded if the BB's would have accepted the offer to do some (if not all) of the backing vocals.  I know Bruce sang on one song, but if I'm not mistaken I could have sworn that they were all offered a chance to perform on the album. I think it would have sounded excellent, especially if Brian was at least in his MIU vocal range..rather than his Love You range.

What the hell happened?  I think they had a BB album deadline to meet at the time (LA Album).

Anyhow, I think it would have been pretty cool for the group at the time seeing as how successful the album was and how "cool" Pink Floyd was compared to the BB's.
