201  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2019 Tour Thread on: September 02, 2019, 09:32:42 AM
Yes, that was a great review.
Wish I could get to a show but these aren't coming anywhere near here.
I fear that a few songs will be taken out to make it not so long of a show.

Maybe BW and company can do a few shows on their own after this is over, interspersing the deep cuts with the hits. If there's a long stretch of deep cuts the casual fan will get antsy.
Also, before at least some of the lesser known songs someone could give a brief intro about it.
Regardless, it seems like Brian's a lot more engaged now, and that's good news indeed.

Yes, usually when someone writes a review giving details instead of generalities (as in, "The ending will be a surprise" ), the reviewer will indicate with **Spoiler Alert** or some such. I was slightly miffed at first to see the spoiler and stopped reading that post. But it's okay. It sounds so far fetched that I'm curious how it comes about.

I'm also glad that you enjoyed your trip to San Francisco.
The U.S. isn't known generally for great chocolate, but San Francisco is an exception.
And you got a chair for your kitty. Sweet!

Glad you came back. Sometimes we just need a break.
Thought of you - got tickets to see Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen this Sunday. Will also be playing on Wednesday - might go to that showing as well lol.

Sold! Okay, I'll go and see it while it's still in the theaters

Oh my I just saw that on FB and was going to ask about it.
Is this recent?
Hope Bruce wasn't hurt.
The guy behind the guitar player was beyond creepy.

Being lazy today. Back tomorrow to the Real World.

John K, hope you weren't affected by the bad weather over there. I saw footage of a tornado in Luxembourg along with hearing that there were also tornadoes in the Netherlands including Amsterdam.

It is truly sad and maddening with the latest mass shootings in California, Texas and Ohio. What's even more maddening is that nothing will be done about it.

I hope RangeRover is having a good trip to San Francisco and elsewhere. I was relieved when she had posted that a friend would be traveling with her. Looking forward to reading her comments upon her return.

So sad to read about the temperatures in Europe - over 40C in Paris. Unbelievable!  Embarrassed

214  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Last Beach Boys song you heard on the radio on: July 07, 2019, 08:47:31 AM
Recently on the 60s channel the guy introduced a song as one that "Brian said he didn't like, but that couldn't be the case because he recorded a solo version later on." (It's not that he didn't like the song, but didn't like the way he sounded on it)

Of course the song was Let Him Run Wild.
Brian sounded fine to me. :-)
215  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: I Hear A Symphony: A \ on: July 01, 2019, 08:00:38 AM
Just a note to thank you for posting about The Planets, one of my favorite symphonies.
And I can't get enough Dvorak!
Thanks again.

PS wish I could figure out how to put accent marks in on my tablet.

Update: the tablet doesn't have the accent for the r, but has for the a - á. Not easy to work with it though. Miss my old PC at work - could do all the accents, different alphabets etc.
Accents are important . One of our Residents was preparing a slide presentation he was going to give in México. One of the slides was concerning a 5 year old child. This was in the old days before programs such as Powerpoint, so our audiovisual department had to make the slides. The text in the slides was in Spanish. The Resident freaked when he saw the slide about the child. It was supposed to have the word " año, " for "year." Instead it read " ano", er , not right!
216  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The 1980's Appreciation Lounge on: June 27, 2019, 07:43:31 AM
Don't know why I don't appreciate 80s popular music. The first few years had some great songs.
Probably my favorites are:
Joe Jackson - Steppin Out
Eurythmics - Would I Lie to You
Billy Joel - Allentown, Pressure

Also remember enjoying music from the DBs, Stray Cats, Men at Work, The Gap Band, Thompson Twins, Elton John, Style Council. Plus some "legacy" artists did some great songs -Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, The Kinks.

Starting around 1985 or so I started getting into a lot of alternative stuff, after starting a subscription to a magazine called 'Dirty Linen' which focused on folk, ethnic, and various alternative bands. One group I particularly fell in love with was Los Lobos. I bought an album by them, 'How Will the Wolf Survive?' that totally blew me away.

Their opening song is "Don't Worry Baby." It's not the Wilson/ Christian version. Totally different. Definitely worth your while if you are interested in some great rockin music.

I'd forgotten that The Communards had done a stunning version of "Never Could Say Goodbye", best known to me from Gloria Gaynor's disco romp:

That is a great version.
Gloria Gaynor does a good job. I LOVE Isaac Hayes's super soulful take. Although it's okay, my least favorite is the original version by the Jackson 5.
218  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Old Record Parade on: June 24, 2019, 10:48:06 AM
Took my Mom to the Dentist today. These appointments usually don't go well so I was a bit stressed.
Tuned the radio to the Soultown channel. And guess what played as I neared the office ?
"Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" by Stevie Wonder. Had to laugh, and figured that the radio gods or whoever arranged for me to hear it. A wonderful song, Stevie at or near his peak.
Yes, the appointment went well. All the people at the office went out of their way to make my Mother comfortable .
So I wasn't surprised when the first song I heard going home was "Lean on Me" by Bill Withers . :-)
219  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Dave Bartholomew RIP on: June 23, 2019, 03:13:31 PM
Wonderful video of the two of them.
Kudos to Eric Paulsen for bringing them together. Paulsen was good friends with Fats Domino and his family in Domino's later years.
220  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Dave Bartholomew RIP on: June 23, 2019, 10:57:06 AM
Just received word that Rock and Roll pioneer Dave Bartholomew has died at the age of 100.
Yes he lived a long life but this still hurts. 2019 has been a horrible year for my city, particularly this past month or so. We've lost several musicians of note, an iconic chef, and a couple of local writers . Hopefully they are having a big ole party up yonder.

(Info courtesy Dominic Massa, WWL TV)
Bartholomew was a trumpeter, band leader, producer, songwriter and arranger.
He's a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
He started working with Fats Domino in the late 40s and in 1949 produced the hit "The Fat Man" (considered by some to be if not the earliest, one of the first "rock and roll" records).
He continued working with Domino, co writing hits such as Ain 't That a Shame, Blue Monday, Walking to New Orleans, Let the Four Winds Blow, plus other songs. He produced and arranged Blueberry Hill.
It was said that he was a stabilizing influence on Domino, helping him remain focused during recording sessions .
He also produced for a number of other local musicians.

Trivia: In 1952 he wrote the song My Ding-a-Ling, which became a big hit later on for Chuck Berry.

(P.S. don’t tell . . . )

I know notting...  Grin

So (1) Mike made a remark on Václav Havel sitting in the audience... and got away with it > Capitalists vs Communists 1-0
And (2) marvellous payback action with the tix > Ca vs Co 2-0.

Just kidding here. Seriously, great story! Thanks for sharing!

Note: not taking any political side or trying to derail this topic (although I don’t mind living in a capitalistic world...)

The

Maybe I'm wrong, but
Wasn't the gentleman in the audience Alexander Dubcek?  I know I thought of him as a hero during the Prague Spring and I wept when the tanks rolled in. Of course maybe Havel was there as well.
Joining the chorus of thanking Mr Desper for his wonderful memories and insights.

Any idea when this might be available? I missed it last time. I sent an email to him many months ago indicating my interest in getting the book.

Yes I got the digital download as well, thank goodness.
I'm re-reading Becoming the Beach Boys. It's great to be able to listen to those songs that are referenced.
224  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Favourite TV Show Themes on: June 12, 2019, 05:42:15 PM
"Laverne & Shirley" - nice cheery song with good vocs & crucial reason - it fits the lovely & funny ladies which TV series tells about. Didn't check its related series ("Happy Days" is it? "Happy Times"? Keep forgetting), seems like it's about family, looking at publicity pic.

The Laverne and Shirley theme is nice.
The other show would be Happy Days
