I confess to not ever hearing the whole Mr Tambourine Man album by The Byrds.

A few days ago while listening on the satellite underground garage channel the song  'Here Without You' was played.

What an incredible song. The harmonies are so beautiful. Downloaded the song and have been listening to it frequently, loving it more each time.

Mary,
Your Dad is blessed to have a loving, caring daughter such as you are.

All the best,

AXS has also run the Musicares Tribute to Brian very recently so hopefully that will pop up again as well

Al said it was originally 800 dollars but with 25 years of interest accumulated he estimated that it had gone up to 15,000 dollars!

His ability to hold, indeed, nurture, a grudge for decades.  Smiley
Sad don't tell me. I don't want to know.

That scene with Gary Usher and Al in The Wilson Project was hilarious. Why didn't Al approach Brian about paying the money back as he was the one who asked Al for it in the first place?  Al's reply, "Brian's different." LOL
1507  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: David Bowie R.I.P. on: January 17, 2016, 04:27:32 PM
There was a nice 'send off' down here in New Orleans yesterday afternoon, courtesy of Arcade Fire and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, who wound their way through the French Quarter with loads of fans in what's known as a 'second line' parade.

I'm unable to put a video on but there are a number of them available online.

One is 'A la Nouvelle-Orleans, Arcade Fire parade en hommage a David Bowie' from Le Huffington Post

RIP Mr Bowie.

Was listening to the weekly 60s XMSirius survey countdown, which covered the top 40 US pop songs for this week back in 1964.
Host Lou Simon at one point said that there was one song he'd play even though it was no longer in the top 40 - it had been a top 10 hit and was still in the top 100. He said that he remembered his brother getting this record and went crazy over it. Said that it was his favorite BBs song.

The song? Be True to Your School! He said that it was happy music, a 'non-stop smile' with wonderful production. Then he played the song.

About a half hour later, after playing a bunch more hits on the survey, Simon said, 'Do you ever have a lyric that you can't shake?' Then he said the lyric in question -'My girl will be working on the pompoms now and she'll be yelling tonight.' He went gaga all of a sudden, taking the Lord's name in vain - twice - and said that he wished he could play the song again. Too funny.

BTW, #10 that week was Drag City, tied with Little Deuce Coupe as my favorite Car Song.
1509  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Favorite instrumentals on: January 13, 2016, 06:31:45 AM
Yes, that version (although the Sounds Orchestral version is okay).
Am a fan of the 'West Coast sound'.

As this thread apparently is supposed to be pop instrumentals, and most of the ones I listed earlier were different genres, here are a couple of pop favorites:

Soul Sacrifice - Santana
Jessica - Allman Brothers
Walk don't Run - Ventures
Telstar - The Tornados
1510  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Favorite instrumentals on: January 10, 2016, 06:38:13 AM
Thank you, kind sir. Still lurking but didn't want to post until I could think clearly.

Wonderful song! The piano at times is shades of Professor Longhair.

Among my favorites:
Cast your fate to the Wind

Blue Rondo a la Turk; Forty Days - Dave Brubeck Quartet

American Garage - Pat Metheny (got me up many a morning back in the early 80s)

Blue Men of the Sahara - Strength in Numbers
Metric Lips - New Grass Revival
Sinister Minister (and many others) - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
1511  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Great Voices in Music on: January 04, 2016, 05:53:06 AM
I think Al has a great voice.
Yes, everybody says it except NOLA BB fan. Even his fellow BBs members think so.

Please see my edit of the original post. Oh my I feel awful at the implication that Al doesn't have a great voice when I think he does. He did a great job at the concert I saw last month.
I'm in tears now. Will stop posting until I can think and write more coherently

And they did Back in the USSR as a tribute to Brian? So Mike didn't have anything to do with that song?
Thought I was finally getting all the facts down and then I read this.

1513  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I heard \ on: December 31, 2015, 12:24:29 AM
On the Sirius XM Underground Garage channel they played Hang On To Your Ego

On their 60s channel, mornings, between songs, can hear covers of BB songs in the background usually as the DJ's talking. The most common played is Lets Go Away for a While. Have also heard In My Room, GOK, Our Prayer, and Surfs Up. On the rare occasions without BB music the most often played is cover of Octopus' Garden.
1514  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Great Voices in Music on: December 27, 2015, 06:01:42 PM
Living in New Orleans, I'm partial to Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas and John Boutte (he sang the Treme TV show theme song; also check out his take on A Change is Gonna Come)

Aretha Franklin, Sarah Vaughn, Roy Orbison, Lou Rawls, Cisco Houston

Vocal groups such as the Boswell Sisters, Louvin Brothers, Everly Brothers

And those 3 brothers from Hawthorne CA
EDIT - should have listed the Wilsons with the other sibling pairings!
I never meant to imply that Al and Mike don't sing well.
The BBs blend gets more amazing every day. That's why I subscribed to this Board.
Apologies if I've given offense. Chronic sleep deprivation while being a 24/7 caregiver these past few days has made me loopy!

Maybe a bit early to post but for those with access to the AXS network, on Sunday Dec 27 at 1:00 pm US Central time, there will be a rebroadcast of the Musicares show honoring Brian
1516  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Misheard Vocals on: December 21, 2015, 07:19:41 PM
One morning, half asleep, was listening to Surfs Up.
Instead of 'bygone, bygone' I heard 'Mike Love, Mike Love'
Now I can't get that out of my head!

On the Lost Concert version of Little Deuce Coupe instead of 'well she blows them outta the water' it sure sounds like Mike is singing:
'Well she blows some marijuana'
1517  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian and Dr. Landy on reelz tv Dr. Feelgood.... on: December 12, 2015, 08:53:41 PM
While Reelz doesn't exactly have a reputation for award winning journalism, this program was better than I expected.
It covered both Landy periods.
On the pro Brian side were Peter Carlin, Russ Titelman, David Wild of Rolling Stone magazine, Brian's former attorney, and an L.A. Journalist. On the Landy side was his lawyer, Mark Meador.

Meador was quite proud of how much money he got out of Brian's family/the BBs for the second round with Landy.  Said that it showed that he did his job well. Also didn't see the ethical problem with Landy being involved with Brian's music career as he saw it as 'therapeutic'!

Mentioned Peter Reum as being a 'hero' as he noticed that the meds were affecting Brian physically. Melinda and Carl were both mentioned as instrumental in freeing Brian.
There were a couple of brief clips of Brian being interviewed on the Larry King show where he spoke about Landy.

The will was mentioned, but curiously the 'autobiography' was not.

Showed the press conference with Stan Love, and Brian giving his statement. Had seen that before but somehow hadnt noticed the look in Brian's eyes as he was leaving, or maybe seeing it on a bigger screen made me see the look of - terror?

The show will be repeating several more times so plan to see it again.

Today (December 7) is a day of remembrance in the US. As this is the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and people of my parents' time can remember what they were doing when they heard the news, the DJs on the satellite radio asked what other dates were significant.
Of course, December 8 1980 is etched in my brain - how I found out the news that terrible Monday night.

Today others gave what were significant dates for them. One was December 28 1983 and the DJ immediately said, oh yes, Dennis Wilson, then mentioned how Brian had honored his memory last Friday night by singing Forever.

Yesterday another DJ related rather solemnly his memory. He and another DJ were big Beach Boys fans and they heard news that hit them hard. He went home and his wife asked him 'Why are you crying?' And he answered, 'Carl Wilson died!'
Then he played God Only Knows.
I lost it.
1519  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson 2016 Tour Thread (Pet Sounds 50th Anniversary Tour) on: December 05, 2015, 06:41:58 AM
Great! Last night Blondie went on and on about how much he enjoyed the present tour and that he'd love to keep on going.
So now it looks to be confirmed - Blondie and Al.
Hate to be greedy as some of you missed seeing the group this year, but hope and pray I can somehow see them at least one more time
1520  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson / Al Jardine / Blondie Chaplin Fall 2015 Tour Thread on: December 04, 2015, 08:18:00 PM
Biloxi show- They performed Little Saint Nick .
And- Brian sang 'Forever' in honor of Dennis. And sang it wonderfully!
Who said Brian was 'out of it'? Sure wasn't tonight! He was the first one out, said hello to the crowd, introduced songs and musicians, sang many songs, all in the original key.
He even waved his hands out in front of him, sending Good Vibrations to the appreciative crowd .

Oh what a wonderful night!

Guess this would be the best place to post this.

For those with access to the AXS TV network, it will be showing 'Brian Wilson and Friends' on Friday December 4. Check local listings-,the time in my neck of the woods (US Central Time) is 12:20 pm. Guess this was the Las Vegas show.

Just don't care for him anymore.
However, that said, thought that Love and Death was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Oh that's an incredible book! So much information. A little slow for me at first but eventually became a book I couldn't put down.
Lots of pictures which I haven't seen before, plus an appendix with some interesting extra info.
I had downloaded the book as it was cheaper but plan to use it for reference so will eventually get a hard copy.
1525  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Which pop stars share your birthday on: November 13, 2015, 07:18:04 AM
. But then there was this name:

1918, Born on this day, Professor Longhair, US rock & roll piano player. Influenced Fats Domino and Dr John. Died on 30th Jan 1980.

Wow, sounds like someone I should know.

Wow, you share the same birthday as the Fess? Yes, please explore his music. He's best known for his two Mardi Gras anthems played all the time down here during the Carnival season- Go to the Mardi Gras, and Big Chief (honoring the Mardi Gras Indians). Also the song, Tipitina (which our legendary nightspot is named after ).

As for me, I share a birthday with some guitar picker named David Gilmour. :-)
