Also Mike is going to be on The O'Reilly Factor tonight.  I know this because I was on the other board and filldeplage is trying to convince me that Bill O'Reilly is a credible journalist.  Go figure!

Well I don't know about "credible journalist" - that's stretching it a bit  Smiley - but he got a few good quotes from Brian when he and Mike were on the show in 2012. Brian said that "another word for genius is 'clever'," and called Mike a "conceptual genius."

Am taping tonight's program and might look at it later, if I read that he said something other than what he's been saying lately.

Gosh, so many good ones.

My favorite is In The Back of My Mind.

Some others, a little back in the pack, include Salt Lake City, Here Today, Kiss Me Baby

Edit

Thanks RR A1 for highlighting the rules for this final round.

For me, the best song is: I Saw Her Standing There

Might order the RR tote bag. Cool.

Fascinating. And sad.

According to a Wiki, they play "outsider music". (Some of Brian's music has that classification as well)

Am very intrigued with Philosophy of the World. They are very deliberate and consistent with their respective beats.
Sounds like the free form jazz I hear at our local JazzFest.

That car song is particularly sad - must get home, can't roam any more.
Was contrasting that with Fun Fun Fun - so she gets caught, can't drive, so what - friends will bring her places.
1331  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: So what did we all EAT today? + recipes. on: September 14, 2016, 09:32:15 AM
There's been a brouhaha down here concerning a video Disney posted on FB yesterday, supposedly a recipe for "gumbo."
They tried to make it "healthy", using whole wheat flour, etc.
Then they added crushed bay leaves. What? Bay leaves are what you put in, whole, because you have to take them out or you can get quite sick.
Then kale!
Then, the horror, Quinoa!

This abomination was not gumbo. Everyone knows that to make a real gumbo, one must make a roux (pronounced "roo") first. A roux is an equal mixture of flour (white flour, whole wheat flour doesn't work!) and oil/butter. The fat is heated then the flour added gradually, then stirred until the color desired (a medium to dark brown). this can take 10-15 minutes to do. What this video showed was adding some whole wheat flour to other ingredients.
And serving the "gumbo" with quinoa - oh, the horror! Only rice will do!

People down here have been doing videos making fun of this video, and Disney took it off FB.

Here's a video on how "NOT" to make gumbo!

Please don't try to go through my earlier posts, unless you want to fall asleep!

The Beach Boys were just one of the groups that I listened to growing up. Remember seeing them on TV a few times. I was probably 6, maybe 7, years old when I first heard them.
At that age period (1962-64) my favorite songs were actually "Soldier Boy", "Mr Bassman" (which I thought at the time was Mr Spaceman), "She's So Fine", and "My Boy Lollipop." That last song came out sometime in the period of Fun Fun Fun and I Get Around.

My feelings about the Beach Boys changed in 1966, at 9 years of age, upon hearing God Only Knows. Remember weeping, thinking that was the most beautiful song I ever heard.
At 10 and a half years old, Good Vibrations blew me away.
Loved Carl's wonderful voice on I Can Hear Music, which was played a lot down here.
Then they seemed to drop off the radar for a while, until Sail on, Sailor which also got a lot of AirPlay.
Would be reminded periodically about them while listening to the distant signal from WSB radio in Atlanta, which broadcast Atlanta Hawks basketball games. I listened to them because I was a fan of one of their players, Pete Maravich, who was there at that time. Whenever they played the Portland team (I think), the play by play announcer, Skip Caray, would say that Stan Love, one of the players, had a brother in the Beach Boys.

Are you sleepy yet? :-)

Anyway, moving right along, have been a fan all these years. Knowing about the conflicts in the band, I really didn't want to watch the TV movies about them. As I posted somewhere some time back, I just wanted to enjoy the music and not know "how the sausage was made," all the doo doo involved in making those incredible songs.

Seeing the movie L&M however made me decide to know more about the conflicts, to try and understand. Still trying to understand! And unfortunately my love for songs such as Surf's Up and Time to Get Alone is mixed with bittersweet feelings, knowing the conflicts involved with getting them recorded.

Enough for now.

Fascinating.

And as I post this to SS, there's a precious cat, Mr Fuzzy, who just turned 15 years old, sitting to my left.  Love

I'd like to hear "California girls" at least once.

California Girls gets played fairly often here. However, don't know the last time that I heard the intro - the disc jockeys insist on talking right through it.  Undecided

Curious - how did you become a Beach Boys fan?
1335  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: I Hear A Symphony: A \ on: September 12, 2016, 04:55:49 PM
Great performance.
Closed my eyes while listening. Mental video of horses galloping across a field, birds flying, swooping up and down, our dog chasing a squirrel up a tree...

Oh, Prokofiev. Mainly know him from the wonderful Peter and the Wolf heard when a child. Will explore him further.
Hard to go wrong with those incredible Russian composers.
1336  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: Songs you are obsessing over. on: September 12, 2016, 04:34:24 PM
Maybe not so much obsessing over but rather revisiting.
The Beach Boys' version of California Dreamin'. Haven't heard it in years - it's a real good version of this song.
The reason for revisiting? Read an interesting thread on another music forum about the Beach Boys in Russia. Forgive me if this is old news, but didn't know that the most played Beach Boys song by far on Russian radio is California Dreamin.
Posters from Moscow said that occasionally songs like California Girls or Good Vibrations are played, but California Dreamin is one of the only BB songs on regular rotation.

Any thoughts, Mari, RR A1? Don't know where in Russia you live - situation might be different there?
1337  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: The Beatles Survivor #1: Please Please Me on: September 12, 2016, 10:09:30 AM
Twist and Shout
aha!  I've found a friend  Grin
You have found another.  "Twist and Shout" should not be in the top 3 - Great version, but it is not an original Lennon/McCartney song.

Sorry, RR1 - it's a good song, amid other good songs. Just like Feelsflow, picked it because it's a cover. (Also, because two of the three other songs are better IMO)
1338  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: So what did we all do today? on: September 11, 2016, 06:30:19 PM
I've been going to the physiotherapist for my left knee, which is well buggered. On my last visit he prescribed me a set of walking exercises----all in a straight line and some involving bending the knees. I've made it more interesting by setting it to music (I'll spare you the details) using an early 1960s song that came to mind immediately (although I had to find out who sang it). And it works wonderfully well. The main problem is keeping my balance! Apparently that's a good thing, as it adds a side-to-side movement. This is the song in question:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Krn4HEA4iV8

Oh I need to walk as well, but it has been so hot. Instead have been following on FB a priest who's getting into shape to take an almost 1000 km pilgrimage in Spain. As he walks he's posting beautiful pictures of the Dutch countryside.
I love that song you posted, but fear that I would have trouble walking to it without falling on my face. Would have to practice before going out in public!
This morning, I had the (mis)fortune to hear "Surfin Bird" by the Trashmen. Watched the video online featuring a Dutch comedian providing choreography for the second half of the song. Maybe I can walk and wave my hands around like that in the park. Would scare wild dogs and muggers away.   Grin

Absolutely, John K!

It's so pervasive that when I read something like "put back in its proper place" it looks wrong. So used to seeing "put back in it's proper place."

Sorry to read that it's not just a problem down here.  People in this part of the US always wait until the last minute if not beyond to find their seats. At the show last December H&V was over half completed, and people were still climbing through my row, trying to find their seats without spilling their drinks all over everyone.
1342  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: So according to Mike, the reason he ended the reunion... on: September 10, 2016, 03:25:14 PM
Did it have to end this way? Could they have continued?
Okay, I'm not an insider, but looking from the outside, couldn't the group agree to end the 2012 tour on a certain date, allowing the various parties to tour the rest of the time on their own ,then make arrangements to do it again in 2013? Set a definite schedule, keep to it, allowing the rest of the year for other touring.
I don't think it would have been confusing to the public if the concerts were publicized correctly. Many fans of the Beach Boys' music don't even know much about who is/was in the band. Those in the know hopefully would be able to tell the difference between the Original Beach Boys group and the Mike/Bruce band.
Ticked off at both sides - why couldn't they actually TALK to each other instead of via email, press releases, letters to the editor etc.
Wasn't a member of any BBs boards in 2012, so didn't know better, and freaked when I read that Mike "fired" Brian. How could he kick out Brian, of all people?! I was furious! Of course, much later I found out that he wasn't fired. But the damage was done, ruining what should have been a joyous occasion.

I do believe that Melinda was acting in what she thought was Brian's best interest in requesting that the tour would end, as it seemed like he was a little slow at first working up enthusiasm for touring. But one can tell that over time he actually came to enjoy the shows so that's probably why Melinda did the follow up email. But it didn't have to be all or nothing. It could have ended for a while, then resumed.

Was Carl a bully for not recording the stuff with Brian and Don Was?
Actually, there's an interview online from 1995 where Brian completely tears into the whole thing. I do know there was a lot of bitterness from Brian towards Carl, but I personally do not know if they had patched things up before Carl passed, and to what extent. At some point Carl was vetoing much of what Brian wanted to do, and it is also mentioned in Peter Carlin's book.

I have been assured that when Carl passed, he and Brian were in a very good, loving place with each other, and this was by more than one person who was "there" (I wasn't, just to be clear).  I did see Brian within the year (I think) and he absolutely glowed at the mention of Carl.  That doesn't strike me as losing a brother with any bad feelings between them.  I hope that makes some people feel better.

Good..I wasn't sure as that period isn't discussed much.

I think the Carlin book states that Brian and Melinda visited Carl and watched the Super Bowl game together on TV in 1998, just a few days before Carl passed away, and patched things up. Brian was very emotional at the funeral.

I can see where you're coming from, but thankfully for myself that doesn't affect how I view the music. Actually, the only person I can think of where my dislike for them makes me not want to hear their music is Ted Nugent.

Yes. This!
1345  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Book Discussion Thread (and how it relates to the SS board) on: September 10, 2016, 10:15:05 AM
I'm willing to give at least some of those at that Board a pass, as they're not from the US.
Guess I'm also hypersensitive to this as a grandniece and 3 grandnephews of mine are half black.

I'm sincerely happy if that back and forth at Dorsey High could take place then. Just know that, down here at that time if a black person objected enough to being called that word, he/she could get in trouble with the authorities.
1346  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike's Book Discussion Thread (and how it relates to the SS board) on: September 10, 2016, 08:02:15 AM
His using that word bothered me a lot. Perhaps because I grew up in the Deep South of the US.
My Mom was fairly "traditional" concerning race relations back in the late 50s/early 60s, my Dad a lot more liberal. But both of them let it be clearly known that using the "n-word" in their presence would bring punishment. My folks were definitely an anomaly down here! My white friends would use that word - I would cringe and thought less of them as a result. That word was always used as an epithet.
Perhaps things were different in Inglewood and Dorsey High back then, where white kids could use that word in a joshing way and the black kids wouldn't mind. (Their parents might have thought differently, however, as most of the African Americans in the Los Angeles area migrated there from New Orleans and other segregated Deep South areas, where that word was not considered to be a "term of endearment")
Need to explore this topic further.
1347  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: So what did we all do today? on: September 08, 2016, 08:07:22 PM
Got kind of stressful today. Family stuff. Gave myself a five minute "pity party" then went on with the day.
Turned on TV. Just what I needed - the station was showing "Brian Wilson and Friends." Brought my blood pressure down. :-)

Then watched a Charlie Chaplin documentary, about his early days before building his own studio. Discussed how he used more tape making one of his 20 minute masterpieces (The Immigrant, 1917) than the 3 hour DW Griffith movie, Intolerance. During this time he'd go to the studio not knowing exactly what would happen but would let everything slowly develop. Kind of like Brian with GV.

Being the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, BBC America is showing a marathon of all the original episodes. Watching that now and will tune in for more tomorrow.
Live long and prosper, y'all!

1349  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: The What Are You Reading? Thread on: September 06, 2016, 05:14:58 PM
That's great that the library offers those books.
Unfortunately I don't think most Americans are into "heavy" reading. We're losing the patience to read things where we actually have to think, to take our time with difficult concepts. A lot of us want to know from someone else (a politician, or the media) what opinions to have. Sad.

Off my "soapbox" now.

Am presently reading John Fogerty's Fortunate Son. Good book, but a downer. Wish I had decided to read it at a different time, as he's starting to relate problems with band members. I'll be reading more about stuff like that when another book comes out next week, written by someone who's discussed a great deal on this board.   Smiley
The other book I'm reading has the provocative title The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu by Joshua Hammer, on their quest to save precious manuscripts from many hundreds of years ago, which are in danger of being destroyed by Al Qaeda. Fascinating so far.
1350  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: The What Are You Reading? Thread on: September 06, 2016, 08:42:51 AM
when I was working at the local dental school, outside of the library was a bookshelf with books of all types. People could take one, donate one, etc.
Our local libraries have these as well. The books are either free, or for next to nothing in cost.
They're good places to get mysteries, 'who done it' books etc. also cookbooks.

P.S. For 3 years we had in my department a resident whose last name was Jardine. He was from the central US. Never got the nerve to ask him if he was related in any way to Al...
