76  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why are BB albums so short? on: May 18, 2020, 07:34:33 AM
2. Regarding the early LPs - 12 tracks were their standard, and BB tracks were quite short On average (“Little Deuce Coupe” is 1.5 minutes!). There is no incentive for a record company to include more tracks than they need to in order to move units (quite the opposite).

Right. They settled on a standard 12 track album for business reasons. Even if Brian had produced hundreds of songs per year, Capitol still would have packaged them 11-12 at a time. They infamously did this with the Beatles catalogue after coming late to the party. Read this article from March 1967 (the very first article, continuing on pg 10) just to get an idea of the record company perspective. They talk about publishing rate issues, not being able to get away with going lower than 10 tracks, and call 30 minutes a "full" album.

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=CykEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA1#v=onepage&q&f=false

By the way, they are talking about lowering the number of tracks even further in this article. The next two studio albums released by the Beach Boys only had 11 songs (SS, WH). All previous studio albums had 12 songs (except PS).
77  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Beach Boy duets? on: May 11, 2020, 07:29:50 AM
Both have (wordless) background vocals, but “Why Don’t They Let Us Fall In Love” and “It’s Just A Matter Of Time” are pretty straight duets by Mike and Brian.
78  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The trainwreck that is The 50th ann. CD on: May 09, 2020, 08:02:32 PM
If anything, autotune can make pitchy singing sound even worse, by over compensating with the software trying to find the right note. Like at 1:18 during this GV clip. You probably wouldn't have noticed Brian being slightly sharp or flat, but you're sure as hell notice the digital artifacts created by the autotune- what sounds like a "bad edit".

I couldn't agree more! Most people (including myself) don't have the ears or training to notice notes that are sung slightly out of tune here or there. And, even if we can, a natural voice singing out of tune still sounds better than an overtly processed voice (IMO). If we can hear the autotune, then it's done more harm than good.
79  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rank BBs album closing tracks on: April 22, 2020, 09:46:26 PM
In the Back of My Mind (Bull Session doesn't count), Caroline No and Funky Pretty are my favorite closers they did.
But is Funky Pretty the closing track, or Mt. Vernon and Fairway? Do you guys play the ep after the album, or before it?

Neither. It's a separate record. Like George Harrison's Apple Jam or John Lennon's Live Jam. Which I think is really cool by the way - free bonus discs w/ unique sleeves and labels.

*Edit: if I counted In The Back of My Mind as the closer of Today, I’d rank it at #1. But the OP asked me to rank the album closing TRACKS not songs, therefore....  Undecided

Yeah, as easy as it is for me to dismiss "Bull Sessions" as an early bonus track when rating the album, technically it is the closing track.

As far as best closers go (in chronological order):

-Auld Lang Syne
-Barbara Ann
-Caroline, No
-Surf's Up
-Cuddle Up
-Summer's Gone

And, yes, I'd include "In The Back Of My Mind" if it were the closer.
80  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If 15 Big Ones was a completely originals album on: April 16, 2020, 12:35:34 PM
Why did it have to be 15 songs anyway? The typical BBs album had 10 to 12. CATP only had 8.

They were treating it as a 15 year anniversary of the group to coincide with the bicentennial.

Thanks for sharing. I agree that it's strangely compelling. I'm appreciating the melodies more.

America's version of "Head and Heart" from their 1972 album, Homecoming. I prefer the lead vocal and the addition of chorus harmony vocals.

L.A. (Light Album)

Though, if we are including solo albums: Pacific Ocean Blue.
86  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Sunflower was a double album... on: February 17, 2020, 09:00:52 AM
The UK charts for 1970 are interesting. Best Of The Beach Boys re-entered 11 times. In May, Live In London was released and failed to chart. "Cottonfields", however, began its 17 week run. The next album released wasn't Sunflower, but, Greatest Hits, which featured "Cottonfields" and was a big success (#5; 20 consecutive weeks). Then Sunflower, also featuring "Cottonfields", was finally released in late 1970 and ended up only charting for 6 weeks, peaking in its first week at #29.

The positive lyrics Til I Die does exist. I doesn't circulate though.

This might be #1 on my list!

A while back there was a yearly head-to-head on Beatles and BB albums

Here's the link for 1968: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,25763.0.html

Beatles won 17 votes to 11.

92  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What's your favorite lead vocal from each Beach Boy? on: January 15, 2020, 11:57:29 AM
Where We Are is an outtake circa 1978 or so...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEksIhraQtg

I've always liked that outtake. Some fans, such as myself, might know it better as "It Could Be Anything". Anyway, if they had worked on it just a little more, giving it a group vibe, I think it would have fit nicely on MIU.

Is this 1969 EP technically the 1st standalone released EP by The Beach Boys since "4 By The Beach Boys" in 1964?

(Not really counting "Mt. Fairway & Vernon" as an EP since it wasn't a standalone release).

There's that weird "The Beach Boys Love Songs" EP from 2006. It shows up on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, etc.
https://www.thebeachboys.com/music/beach-boys-love-songs

There were also EPs in other regions. Like that cool 1977 UK EP with Mona/Rock And Roll Music/Sail On Sailor/Marcella.
94  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The potential success (or lack therof) of the aborted Lei'd in Hawaii album on: December 24, 2019, 05:41:31 AM

Interesting. The sequence on Sunshine Tomorrow is slightly different in that GOK is between THWFOS and GV. There's also no mention of BA or YGTHYLA. I wonder what the source of those tracks would have been. Live performances, presumably. If they were on the reel, I wish they would have included those vintage mixes on Sunshine Tomorrow.

They were from the 1966 Michigan concerts, not sure which shows though. They were understandably left off ST1 for CD space since they'd already been released in some form but I think it was a bad move not including the mono mixes on ST2.

Got it. Thanks for the info. They also could have mentioned this in the liner notes on ST1; including, which shows were the source of each.

96  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The potential success (or lack therof) of the aborted Lei'd in Hawaii album on: December 24, 2019, 05:27:00 AM
The album lineup on the reel was apparently:

Fred Vail Intro
The Letter
You're So Good to Me
Help You Rhonda
California Girls
God Only Knows
Surfer Girl
Sloop John B
With a Little Help From My Friends
Barbara Ann
You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Their Hearts Were Full of Spring
Good Vibrations

So they weren't planning to use Barbara Ann, Surfin', H&V or Game of Love, which is a shame. With a Little Help from My Friends is a really strange inclusion for a fake live album with all the tape speed discrepancies on the vocals.

97  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Lei'd In Hawaii Questions on: December 23, 2019, 04:42:28 PM
* Brian played bass on the "Lei'd" version of "Sloop", as well as the otherwise unheard instrumental "Hawthorne Blvd."  Alan and Carl rotated bass duties for the rest of the songs.  I haven't been able to sort it all out yet, but I think Carl played bass on "GOK" and "GV", while Al played bass on "Gettin' Hungry", and probably "Surfin'" and "Hawaii", as he did on the studio recordings of those songs.

c-man, this post is 10 years old, so I'm curious if you'd make any changes.

Upon re-reading the liner notes of my CD copy of Sunshine Tomorrow (gotta love physical media!)

Whoa, I re-read the liner notes just a week or so ago, too. I've been listening to those Lei'd In Hawaii studio recordings over and over. Anyway, I found the original liner notes to Wild Honey to be the most fascinating. It stated that "The Letter" would be included on a "new upcoming live album which will be highlights from a variety of shows". So...

- How many songs would have been faked vs the actual tracks used from the Hawaii concerts? Was literally nothing salvageable from the actual live sets?

I think, initially, it was concluded that nothing was salvageable from the actual live sets and they set out to record a fake live set in the studio. Then, they decided to abandon that idea (or did they?) and focus on Wild Honey. According to those original liner notes, there was still an idea to release a live album after Wild Honey. Was this a new idea to include the best performances they could from various shows (and potentially include some studio performances as well) or are they just trying to sell the studio recordings as being from actual shows? Either way, fascinating. I thought that by the time Wild Honey was being recorded in earnest, Lei'd In Hawaii (in whatever incarnation) had already been scrapped.

- How exactly were they planning to fake the live applause? Were they just going to fade into applause from the actual Hawaii concerts? Or use stock applause from other shows?  I can't imagine it sounding natural. It's like a 60s sitcom with live applause (Dick Van Dyke Show, for example) vs. a 60s sitcom with canned laughter (Gilligan's Island, Get Smart, etc) - pretty damn obvious.

Just a guess, but maybe they had recorded crowd noise separately from their instruments and vocals. That way they'd have some options when mixing.
99  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: December 19, 2019, 09:02:35 AM
Unless I've missed something, there has been no official announcement of any new Beach Boys product, compilation or box set.  All we have to work with is Jardine's vague statement.  But if this potential release was going to focus on the Sunflower/Surf's Up era, wouldn't it make more sense to put it out next year for the former album's 50th anniversary?  Hasn't that been basically how they've been releasing these last few compilations?  Why would we expect this to come out beforehand?

If there are any unreleased songs from the Sunflower/Surf's Up era that were recorded in 1969, then they'd need to be released by year end. Something akin to “Walkin’” or "Well You Know I Knew", which were recorded during the 20/20 sessions in 1968.

I'd be surprised if there's not at least a digital release of live performances, perhaps with a few studio recordings tacked on to ensure copyright protection (if there are any).

Well, that's about 100x more enjoyable than "Break Away". Nice version.
