Even Susie Cincinnati was unreleased and might've had some single potential given its "old school" style which was to popular at the time.

Well technically, "Susie Cincinnati" was already released back in 1970 as the b-side to "Add Some Music to Your Day", but since the single flopped, I guess the track was as good as unreleased to the group!

Wasn't it also the b-side (in the US) to Child of Winter in Dec. 1974? Then in Nov. 1976 the b-side to Everyone's In Love With You. Still, it certainly should have found a home on a 1975 studio album.

Edit: Or was Susie the a-side in 1976? If so, Wiki is surely misleading...

Ahh, just read Kerr is sitting their best players and Kawhi will be out with a concussion. So much for a great game. Spurs should only be a half game out, with the tiebreaker, after tmw's game tho. Didnt expect that when the season started. Cavs havent been great lately either.

Hey guys, there's a part of the Smile Sessions where Brian maps out a bass vocal and does a real low note - like so low (for the era) that it's almost debatable whether it was him (I think Mike was there with him? I was 80% sure it was Brian) Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I think it may have been a version of Wonderful, or perhaps a Love to Say Dada session. Bonus points if you can name the note  Grin

My instinct is to say it was for the How I Love My Girl sessions.

Or the 'Rock With Me Henry' version of Wonderful? I remember in the Vocal Range thread it was stated that Brian was attempting to hit an Ab1.

How was the music during the game? Apparently, during the 1st half of the Knicks game no music was played or any other form of in-game entertainment. Is this something that other teams have done in recent years? Ive never heard of it. The intent was to allow the fans to 'experience the game in its purest form'. Surprised the Knicks were willing to spotlight their product on the floor like that. Or perhaps they were trying to further endear themselves to potential free agents. I actually think it's a cool idea (even if it's just a one-off). It would have been interesting to be there. Draymond Green said it was 'pathetic' and 'completely disrespectful' LOL As a player (I'm trying to think way back to my playing days), I think it's more intense without the distractions. It's more intimate. I dont attend many games and have only been to MSG once to see a Knicks game, so i can't really comment on that experience. I just try to tune all that stuff out though. I just enjoy the game itself.

My pick for booting off this first round is easy.

The Word.

Blasphemy!

Did you mean to break my heart and watch me die?

I can't vote off What Goes On yet either. I love singing along to John's part and listening to Paul's bass playing. And I truly love that lyric. I always get a kick out of it. This album may very well be the hardest to rank. The quality and production of songs are so consistent, it's harder to parse them. Revolver, Sgt Pepper, and the White Album are stylistically more diverse, which makes it a little easier to rank our preferences.

My vote this round is for Drive My Car. I like John and Paul's harmony. John, particularly, gets a cool tone which compliments Paul's shouting very well. The harmonies only get better, though... Overall, one of the few Beatles songs I don't care much about. Never cared for the lyrics.

That internship sounds like a blast, Captain. So, if you had the Wolves' ear, what would you have to say about this Rubio/Rose swap with NY? The way I hear it, the Wolves approached the Knicks about Rose. I, for one, would love to get Rubio! I have a feeling you're hoping this rumor is unfounded? My hope for the Knicks has finally evaporated, so I doubt we'll get Rubio or move Melo.

I agree about Cousins. Not worth the hassle. Addition by subtraction. It's not like they've won anything with him... It is interesting that the Pelicans now have both Anthony Davis and Cousins on the same roster. I am curious to see how that unfolds. Will they stay long-term?

I haven't been participating in this thread lately because after watching nearly every minute of the Knicks first 29 games, I haven't watched a minute of the past 28. It's odd for me to lose interest like that, but could my timing have been better? The Knicks started out 16-13, only to go 7-21 since. Pathetic situation. I'm just interested in Melo trade rumors at this point. I foresee him being moved this summer, although if there's any sign of Jackson being on his way out, then I could see Melo waiting him out.

I'm very interested in the revised and expanded edition of The Real Beach Boy. Are there still legal clearance and liability issues? I hope everything works out. I'm looking forward to it!

Nice song selection. I enjoyed the playlist. Especially incorporating You've Touched Me into Where Has Love Been. That was awesome!

I mean, Love You and 15 Big Ones are just as good Smiley

I agree with Love You, as it's  a stunning, original work.

Interested in your hearing your thoughts behind putting 15 Big Ones up there with Pet Sounds,  Donny.

If I may, DonnyL was quoting Brian Wilson. And I gotta say... I love how much Brian loves his own work.

As far as Pet Sounds being overrated? I don't think so. I'm willing to consider it, but I just can't get there. It deserves the praise it receives and its status as one of the greatest records ever made.

While I personally don't think PS is overrated, I can understand why some people don't like the album and therefor can't understand why the album tops many critics best lists.  The reasons are all detailed in the links from the first post - too many downbeat slow sentimental (one person said syrupy) depressing songs (Mike Love's critical appraisal as well?), only a few good songs (essentially because of the first point), overblown production that essentially copied Spector and so wasn't innovative, high voices/falsetto on some songs that are emasculating or embarrassing to even listen to (a criticism that Brian could relate to, feeling the same way about some of his vocal performances like on Let Him Run Wild).

That's what I get out of the linked articles, and that these people who don't like the album believe the reasons the album is revered is because of the mythic back story that critics love - crazy mentally unstable rock star fights with record company to release his masterpiece before breaking down completely during the Smile sessions.

The albums songs ARE sentimental at times but also sensitive, reflecting the sensitive, emotional and emotionally troubled artist himself, and those sentiments are given a remarkable musical backdrop and melodies and harmonies that are nothing short of genius for those who can appreciate them.  And what the macho let's rock and roll upbeat only critics of PS perhaps don't realize is that the emotions and feelings explored in Pet Sounds are universal and very common in adolescence, even though at the time, 1966, few men or high school boys would ever admit to it.  It's a different age now, but it was very brave of Brian, with Tony's help, to bare his feelings and expose himself like that, when to do that in high school in 1966 would likely invite ridicule and taunts to "man up."

Great post. Pet Sounds isn't going to be everyone's favorite album, but that doesn't mean it's overrated. I don't care for most 'classic' albums, but that doesn't take away from their greatness.

...it even strangely works having Good Vibrations on there. Its like nature has reclaimed an abandoned city, with little bits of the Smile structure poking through the foliage.

Wow. I like that thought! With that said, I was about to revive an old thread to say that Good Vibrations and Bull Sessions With 'Big Daddy' are my two most skipped songs in the Beach Boys discography! I guess I'll just mention it here and save it for my Smiley Smile review (whenever I get around to it). Smiley Smile is so unique and it sets a mood like no other album I know of...Good Vibrations takes me out of it, so I skip it. Next time, I'll consider your take on it.

They were back in LA on Jan 25 1988 to pick up the award of merit at the American Music Awards. Mike was wearing a hard hat in case people attacked him after his Hall of Fame speech the previous week.

LOL That's great! Thanks for sharing.

Separately, I'm not necessarily comfortable with the assumption that the thread was deleted specifically or solely because it reflected "poorly on this board", as if it was covering up members "running off" Desper from the board. I honestly have no idea how the entire thread was deleted instead of simply locked. I do remember the post that re-posted Desper's original comments *sans* any political references, which proved to me more than anything that the damn post could have been made that way in the first place.
Well, I don't feel great about it either, but what else am I supposed to think? It had been sandboxed and presumably locked, at that point, deleting it only serves to keep people from reading it. Also (since it's been brought up again), I found the 'Desper Talks Early BBs Touring' thread to be in poor taste. I didn't say anything at the time or earlier in this thread because I believe Pretty Funky had good intentions, but look at it from Desper's point of view. To be blatantly censored (effectively being told what he's here for) after providing so much to the board and to have some of the same people who ganged up on him such as mathen_ arrogantly reply, "now that's a nice topic!!!"...I mean, come on! I realize how mild that seems out of context and with everything else deleted, but it was incredibly inappropriate IMO. Btw, Desper's initial post wasn't even inflammatory.

Let me also mention that I'm no stranger to overreaction or misinterpretation of one's motives in starting a thread. So believe it or not, I'm empathetic to the motives behind a post being mischaracterized. I started a thread a year or two back trying to delve into some comments Elliott Lott had made circa 1999 about Mike not wanting to appear on stage with Carl, and a couple of the usual pro-Mike suspects immediately jumped on me assuming I was just looking to start some sort of anti-Mike thread. As I recall, I acknowledged how it could easily appear or be interpreted that way (I think I even said so in my *initial* post), and went to great pains to *very specifically* explain that I truly was trying to get to the bottom of a murky piece of BB-related history. I didn't feign incredulity as if I didn't even understand how someone could *possibly* read something negative into my motives. After being lambasted by the usual small group of suspects, the thread kind of died down, and eventually Ray Lawlor posted basically confirming and elaborating on that very story, which was the *precise* thing I was looking for when I started the thread.
That's a shame when you ask an honest question and people misread you. That's actually a pet peeve of mine (I'm making a list for the thread here Smiley) When people look past your actual question and answer the question they think you're really asking (they're so clever Roll Eyes). Anyway, I'll search for that thread later, I'm interested in reading (or perhaps re-reading) your question and Ray Lawlor's response.
724  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: AGD missing, the future of this forum on: January 24, 2017, 01:27:02 PM
Mr. Desper left because he was disrespected. The thread has been deleted. I assume because it reflects poorly on the board. Hopefully, he'll return. There's a lot more I could say about this, but what's the point? He's surely missed by many members and readers. I will say though, that I remember reading his initial post and thinking "oh yeah, I just heard about this". Meaning, I was watching TV or reading an article which mentioned Trump's rallies and contrasted them with Clinton's. Specifically, that he'd sometimes have multiple rallies (in different states) on the same day. It's not hard to imagine how that might have sparked Desper's memories of the BBs touring. Also, whether or not Desper was called an "asshat" or an "idiot" is completely beside the point.

If you were John Lennon’s engineer then we might want to set aside the uncomfortable aspect of that comparison rather than hone in on it.

We might but I wouldn't blame anyone for engaging with it and I would hope that if I were the engineer, I would be able to accept that and take ownership over my words and actions.

Well put.

I just don't like the idea that anybody here should have to compromise their ethics or morals (e.g. *not* say something to an insider that they *would* say to a random poster) in exchange for interesting Beach Boys trivia.

I agree with DonnyL. I also think insiders and honored guests and moderators should be held to the same standards as everyone else, but it's not a matter of bringing them down, but raising everyone else up. Engaging wasn't the problem, it was the disrespectful tone of a few posters. And sure, you can disagree while maintaining tolerance, but I disagree that Desper's views (or perceived views) were entirely tolerated. Generally speaking, HeyJude, I think you have been downplaying the reaction by some in that thread. It's too bad we can't go back and refresh our memories.
