Terrific thread. Thanks to all contributors. Hopefully more info will be unearthed. Dark times...

Sunflower not making the list is exactly why we need the feel flows box set, people need to be reminded of just how good it is

Definitely. Who knows - without Sunshine Tomorrow maybe Wild Honey isn't added to the 2020 list?

Here's the Beatles breakdown I posted on https://thebeachboystoday.proboards.com/

The Beatles lost With The Beatles in 2012 and 2020, but considering they included Meet The Beatles in each list, I'm not sure why it was included in the first place. I don't like to see albums on the list that overlap. That's an obvious problem with compilations and could even have been a factor in omitting Smiley Smile and Surf's Up (in favor or TSS/BWPS). Despite the 2012 list clearly being a minor revision of the 2003 list, there were some major changes. Look at Let It Be, it dropped from #86 to #392 in 2012! Then, when most other Beatles/classic rock albums were plummeting in 2020, it rose 50 spots. Go Figure! Other notable developments are Please Please Me being omitted from the 2020 list (after being a top 40 album!) and Abbey Road climbing to #5, leapfrogging four Beatles albums, to become their highest ranked album in 2020.

John Lennon took a somewhat unexpected hit in 2020. He's in great company, but the drop seems excessive to me. Especially considering the recent, critically acclaimed Imagine box set. Interesting that Band on the Run was omitted from the 2020 list in favor of Ram.

The Beatles
Sgt Pepper (1, 1, 24)
Revolver (3, 3, 11)
Rubber Soul (5, 5, 35)
The Beatles (10, 10, 29)
Abbey Road (14, 14, 5)
Please Please Me (39, 39, - )
Meet The Beatles (59, 53, 197)
Let It Be (86, 392, 342)
Help (332, 331, 266)
A Hard Day's Night (388, 307, 263)
With the Beatles (420, - , - )

John Lennon
Plastic Ono Band (22, 23, 85)
Imagine (76, 80, 223)

Paul McCartney
Band on the Run (418, 418, - )
Ram ( - , - , 450)

George Harrison
All Things Must Pass (437, 433, 368)

To back up what you're saying about Abbey Road - it was the highest selling vinyl album of the 2010s.
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rolling Stone once again chooses top 500 albums, Pet Sounds is once again at #2 on: September 22, 2020, 04:14:08 PM
There are also two albums with BBs on backing vocals on the list:

129. Pink Floyd, The Wall
214. Tom Petty, Wildflowers

The biggest surprise for me was the Beatles' Revolver (#11) ranking higher than Sgt. Pepper's LHCB (#24).

Why? Revolver was their best record.

I'm not surprised that Revolver ranked higher than SPLHCB, that's been coming for a while, but for Revolver to drop from 3 to 11 and, especially, SPLHCB to drop from 1 to 24 is pretty surprising.

I think they're comparable, quality-wise. It's just a matter of taste.

Very cool. Especially that he's familiar with, and a fan of, TWGMTR. Thanks for sharing.

Just to let you know, no announcements re: FEEL FLOWS will be coming via a fanzine.
If and when the project picks up steam -- I promise you guys will be first to know.
Also chiming in with a thanks for dropping by. Your phrasing gives me some hope that, if still stuck, it’s not completely off the cards yet.
Yes. "If and when" lightens the mood a bit.

You're just regurgitating the same stuff we've been reading on message boards for 7 years. Does anyone stop to consider whether these copyright "facts" are even accurate? The only thing I'm confused about is why some fans are posing as copyright experts.

Feel free to research it yourself. It might clear up some confusion.

Countless other watchers of that film dug deeper into this band because he chose the song "Feel Flows" in the end credits. (I'm guessing that was the very first time that song was licensed in any sort of Hollywood film? I would be shocked if there was an earlier example.) Crowe CLEARLY thinks highly of the 70-71 period of this band. He CLEARLY thought that was a significant song to put in his film. He's a music geek and scholar. This song being in that movie was no accident. Crowe is probably the most high profile person to specifically give center stage to the material of this band from this era, especially at that relatively early date of 2000.

I've always kinda assumed that Crowe chose "Feel Flows", at least in part, as a tribute to Carl. This was Crowe's first film since Carl's death. Has Crowe ever commented on that? Just a curiosity...

Looking over the comment Mike made, he did acknowledge that something "archival" is indeed happening, albeit in a dismissive, almost as an afterthought kind of way.

I have read his statement over and over again to find where he acknowledged that something was indeed happening and I'm not finding it.

He says "I think there will be opportunities to come up with compilations and, as you say, archival, but also new renditions with other artists and stuff, of many of our songs" but this doesn't at all mean that anything is going to actually happen.

He specifically says that he "thinks" there will be "opportunities" to "come up with" archival releases. Sad thing is, Feel Flows doesn't need an opportunity to be "come up with" - it is literally finished. It is completely ready to go. So there is no way he was referring to Feel Flows - in which case his statement doesn't mean anything to this thread, other than what he clearly didn't say in that statement.

Not only that, but it seems like he's just repeating the word of the interviewer to appease him and attempt to tie the answer together.

Any news?
65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: August 21, 2020, 02:26:00 PM
thetojo, I've been thinking about that as well. If this box set isn't released, then I think that's it for copyright extension box sets. Selling these projects as physical releases isn't easy, and that's with the full support of the band. Even any future digital-only releases will probably be compromised.
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Nate Ruess on collaborating with Brian Wilson on: August 19, 2020, 03:06:26 PM
I agree with you, Sam_BFC. I enjoy the firsthand recollections and insights of meeting and working with Brian and his band. I find that very interesting. The Mike bashing? Not so much. Reminds me of the old saying, "it's not what you say, it's how you say it."
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: August 14, 2020, 08:00:45 AM
I hope this is all just a brilliant PR campaign to generate buzz about this set...get a petition going, social media buzz, Mike Love completely snubs the set to get the people talking about how this set may not come out at all. Then in a week or two this thing is available for pre-order.

The same thing crossed my mind! We can dream...
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Feel Flows box set on: August 13, 2020, 07:49:33 PM
In all seriousness, you've gotta think if there weren't a hang up with Feel Flows then he would have mentioned it. So, not good.

Sounds like we might finally be getting Stars and Stripes Vol. 2, though.  LOL Cry
70  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Priess Tape on: August 13, 2020, 12:54:39 PM
Diane was getting phone calls from Marilyn, who was talking to Carl Wilson. Everyone applauded when Diane had received word that Carl was back in the group.

I realize this is a thread about the Priess tape, but I found this recollection interesting. As the Gaines book tells it, two weeks after the tarmac incident the group had a meeting and essentially got back together. But, Carl and Dennis didn't spend much time in Iowa and according to the Bellagio site there were concerts in mid October which featured members of Celebration. There was also Bambu sessions and the potential Dennis Wilson solo tour, and there's this recollection above from the MIU sessions which took place in Nov/Dec of 1977. So, I wonder about Carl and Dennis' status in the group in the fall of 1977. Did they quit for an extended period of time? Or, more than once?
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys trying to sack Bruce around Sunflower on: August 09, 2020, 01:02:56 PM
I was reading about Sunflower on Wikipedia - obviously not a legitimate source - and there was a quote that said:

In August, Carl, Dennis, Mike Love, and Jardine sought a permanent replacement for Johnston. They approached Carl's brother-in-law Billy Hinsche, who declined the offer to focus on his college studies.

I had never heard this before. Is this true? Did Bruce know at the time? What was the reasoning? Strange they wanted to boot him but ended up taking two of his songs for the album. And featuring him vocally on other songs on the album.

And their next A-side was "Tears In The Morning". So, if true, very odd. I think it's telling, though, that it wasn't until Blondie, Ricky, and Jack were on board, and Dennis had injured his hand, that they "finally" pushed Bruce out.

Edit: The wiki quote is referring to August 1969, not 1970.

If Bruce actually posted a sign that said “No Wilsons Allowed” in Brian’s home studio, he deserved to get kicked out.

Honestly, I don't think it's a big deal - assuming it happened only once. I'm sure much crazier sh*t went down.
72  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: August 06, 2020, 12:39:06 PM
In this 1979 segment for PM Magazine, co-host John Walls profiles the enduring popularity and recording success of the Beach Boys. The legendary rock band played a concert at the Beaumont Civic Center on October 2, 1979. Before the show, Walls speaks with fans about their interest in the Beach Boys. The segment also includes comments from band members Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston made during a pre-concert press conference. PM Magazine was a local news and entertainment television program broadcast on Beaumont's KFDM-TV in from late 1970s to the mid-1980s. This segment aired on November 8, 1979.

Thanks for sharing, Rocker. They sound good. Crowd was into it. I assume Dennis wasn't there, that he was suspended at the time. Interesting that the co-host mentioned the group planning their next two albums. Can't help but notice Brian jetting off the stage at the end.

I wonder if they ventured beyond Surf's Up and into late 1971 and 1972. Maybe something like "Carry Me Home" was included on this set. I doubt they had a hard cutoff.
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Songs that remind you of specific Beach Boys songs on: June 22, 2020, 10:01:12 AM
Lyrically, Bob Dylan's "Heart of Mine" is reminiscent of Brian's "Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel". Check out these (prominent) lines:

Don’t let her know
Don’t let her know that you love her

Don’t let her see
Don’t let her see that you need her

Don’t let her hear
Don’t let her hear you want her

Don’t let her know
Don’t let her know where you’re going
