Hey, slightly different format this time. Just 3 clips (one 2 second, one 1 second, one .5 second), played 3 times each. After listening post your answers in code by abbreviating the album and song titles. So, if you think the answers are "Let Us Go On This Way", "Farmer's Daughter", and "Where I Belong" post something like "1. lylugotw 2. susafd 3. tbbwib". Not much of a code but it's quick and I think it might be enough not to spoil the game. I'll post the answer clips on Wednesday evening. If there's enough interest, I was thinking of maintaining a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule for a few weeks. Have at it! (If these are too easy, trust me, I can make it a LOT harder!) https://soundcloud.com/b-e-18181486/beach-boys-game-2

And yet I still can't fully make out what Carl's singing at the end of "All I Wanna Do", lol. It's clear that the beginning bit is "If you get lonely in the night..." Anyone decipher what follows?
It's 'If you get lonely in the night I'd come and be with you' Yeah, it's finally clear to me after hearing the 'vocals only' track! "Won't You Tell Me" - Was Brian laughing at Murry's comment or at something else happening in the studio? I couldn't tell. What disturbed me was hearing Murry's voice say "Brian, I'm talking to you" like Brian was 10 or something. I tensed up hearing that, even though that demo is a treat over all.
I'm getting 'Beauty, Brian I'm talking beauty' from Murry here. He very definitely loves this song! You're right, nice catch.

Hey, rab, thanks for playing. I had fun putting it together. I've posted it on two other forums and most fans are scoring between 8-12 so no need to be embarrassed! It's tough with the Beach Boys because their catalog is huge. Either our brains can't quite sift through the hundreds of songs we're familiar with in time or the snippet happens to be one of the few tracks we aren't too familiar with. When I played the Beatles version, I think I actually got the easiest ones wrong! Boy, was I kicking myself. But, that's the fun of it, really.

I recently watched a Beatles YouTube video where they played 15 short song snippets and you had to guess each song. They used five 2.0 second, five 1.0 second, and five 0.5 second clips, but I ended up with three 2.0 second, seven 1.5 second, three 1.0 second, and two 0.5 second clips. So, considerably easier, I think! The soundcloud track I'm posting here is only about 5 minutes long. You'll hear each snippet twice (5 seconds apart) and then you'll hear an extended version to reveal the answer. If you'd like to pause it after the first and/or second play to ponder the answer for a few moments, feel free to do so, but then you gotta guess! I think it'll be too easy if you take your time and listen to it over and over. I didn't try to be tricky. I selected memorable/distinctive moments. I picked songs from the studio albums. I balanced out the hits and non-hits, and spanned the decades. I encourage everyone to share their score (e.g. "10/15" if you got 10 right) but be careful not to reveal the answers. (At least not until such a time that everyone who's interested has had a chance to play.) Get out your headphones and have at it! https://soundcloud.com/b-e-18181486/beach-boys-game-1

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: She Knows Me Too Well- An abusive relationship set to music

She Knows Me Too Well has great lyrics. It's telling an interesting and complicated story, much like other Today and Pet Sounds tracks.
There is though a few other lyrics in the Beach Boys world that irritates me in the similar manner that someone might think about SKMTW, first one being The Little Girl I Once Knew:
"We met when she was younger And I had no eyes for her A few years went by and I saw her Now I'm gonna try for her"
That just sounds creepy to me. And it's a shame, because the music is great, but the idea behind the lyrics is just so stupid.
Nothing creepy about it. Imagine the guy is 3 or 4 years older than the girl. He sees her when she's 11 or 12, and has no interest in her. "She's just a little girl!" A few years go by, now she's 14 or 15 - wearing makeup, more developed. This kind of thing happens all the time. They could even be the same age. I don't think it's creepy.

I happen to love the sound of the drums on that track 🥺
The drums are perfect on that song. Yes they are loud, but the drum pattern is simple enough that the loudness only compliments the mood of the song. The drums mix with the bass perfectly, and both set a driving rhythm that makes the song unique yet absolutely listenable. That’s probably my most played song from that album. I don't mind the drums on this track, either, but have always noticed how loud they and the bass are. Being Ricky and Blondie's first BBs track, it's as if they're introducing themselves in a conspicuous manner - stepping right up to the album's listeners, extending their hand, and saying, "Welcome to OUR musical world". The drums and bass are too loud for my taste. Conversely, the lead vocals are buried. I wish they'd introduced themselves by leaning closer to the mic!

I'm dropping the following without a second thought:
-Louie, Louie -Long, Tall Texan -409 (the duplicate on Vol. 3) -Frosty The Snowman -Girl Don't Tell Me -Surfin'
There's a lot of competition to fill these spots. First check out the charting songs (top 100) left off (in chronological order): -Ten Little Indians #49 -Shut Down #23 -Be True To Your School #6 -Do You Wanna Dance #12 -Sloop John B #3 -Wouldn't It Be Nice #8 -Wild Honey #31 -Friends #47 -Do It Again #20 (cutting it close, but this was released prior to Vol. 3) Then consider some of these quality album tracks (in chronological order): -Lonely Sea -Hawaii -Ballad of Ole Betsy -Car Crazy Cutie -Custom Machine -Keep An Eye On Summer -All Summer Long -We'll Run Away -Hushabye -Girls On The Beach -Don't Back Down -Good To My Baby -In The Back Of My Mind -There's No Other (Like My Baby) Also, consider that "God Only Knows" was the only Pet Sounds track included! Craziness!

On the original it might be some sort of synth handclaps mixed with real handclaps, I tried to put mine louder in my mix but I couldn't get it to work with all the harmony and other stuff going on.
Ah, okay, I suspected you included it low in the mix, but then I thought my ears were playing tricks on me. Great mix, by the way. I meant to comment on that in my initial reply. Brians productions were amazing in all different sounds he could fit in the soundspace without any clashing. I have more and more respect and appreciation for Brian and what he does with each passing day.
Definitely. His unique approach to percussion intrigues me. I mean, there's NO drums on "I'll Bet He's Nice" but you don't really notice unless you're listening for it. Much of Love You is just a snare drum or "handclaps". Wild Honey has a similar approach. Then there's a lot of the mid '60s hits, and certainly Pet Sounds and Smile. It's often a minimalist approach, that frees up the soundspace. But, his songs still drive forward.

First I just want to say that I side with much of Sam_BFC, rab2591, and marcella27's posts in this thread. Too bad there's not a 'like' button here! Not a fan of politicization. I don't mind art that speaks in a political manner, but when groups simply play their unrelated tracks at an event like this it just seems like a lazy play for support. It's a far cry from something like "What's Going On", or stuff like that. Spreading a message and talking about the world. I don't like when artists do events like this for anyone. (Remember the cringe-fest for Clinton in 2016...all those artists who have probably never even voted... yikes)
It's his right, it's legal and he has the right to use the name. I wouldn't even call it entirely morally wrong. But it is absolutely a half-assed and entirely non-artistic show of support. The bad kind of politicization for sure.
Interesting distinction, FatherOfTheMan. Very thought-provoking.

With a lot of John's music, you kind of have to agree with his POV to enjoy it.
Hmm. For some of his more overtly political, STINYC-era material? Yes, I can certainly see that. But I don't get that sense for "a lot" of his music. There are parts of John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band that I love, and parts that I hate.
I'm curious what parts you hate (and love, for that matter), but especially hate. Rock 'N' Roll has some of his best singing on it.
I totally agree. Especially for his solo career.
