151  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: April 03, 2019, 08:19:18 AM
the speeding up of CN was most probably done at the time for the 45 single release, in other words that's what Murry & Capitol felt was necessary if a Brian Wilson solo record was going to have the best radio play chance

the speed change was merely carried over when it was placed on the PS album now as a group effort

I don't think Capitol had anything to do with that decision. And Murry had nothing to say about their releases (he was fired by then), it was just a suggestion by him to Brian. Brian liked it and went ahead with it.

I don't think he ever changed his mind either. For the Classics Selected By Brian Wilson comp, he said that CN "represents the sweetest I can sing" (which I find very interesting considering it's sped-up). Does anyone recall if he mentioned it in his book?

Jessie Reiswig, I believe you're correct. The original speed version of "Caroline, No" is still only available on the Pet Sounds Sessions box set. Unfortunately, this version isn't available on streaming services, such as, Spotify. Also, Spotify mistitles the stereo sped-up version that's included on Classics Selected By Brian Wilson as original speed.

That's a damn shame that it's not on proper streaming services. Good thing for YouTube and my iPod classic.

The tracks (stereo and mono) can still be purchased on iTunes. Weirdly, iTunes mistitles the box set as "40th anniversary".

Out of curiosity, how highly do you rank All Summer Long among your favorite BB albums? Would it be higher if it weren't for OFRS? Personally, All Summer Long has always been top 5 for me. Usually, either 3rd or 4th.
As far as albums go it's definitely up there for me. Even with the inclusion of OFRS it is one of their stronger albums. For their pre-Pet Sounds I'd rank it behind Today and Summer Days. It's probably #5 or #6 for me overall.

That's high praise, and I never tire hearing it! 'The Definitive SSMB Album Ranking' thread currently has it at #13.  Angry

I would like to point out first, that it is actually Al Jardine singing lead on Santa Ann Winds.

Mike sings...
"And see the San Gabriel Mountain scene"
"Becoming one with the boundless sea"
"Whispering the wisdom and its purity"

Anywho, that's my lousy armchair quarterback qualm with the album. I'm beyond happy we have all this music, so this isn't supposed to be a rip at the album, just an observation.

Absolutely, rab. It's understood.

All Summer Long's 'Our Favorite Recording Session' - basically the entire album is chock full of hooks, harmonies, killer chords, hits (even a #1 hit), and the flow is kinda just abruptly halted by the filler talking track. Idk, it doesn't really sabotage the album, but on the other hand, I'm less likely to play it when other people are around lest they have to hear Mike Love's fake southern accent. And I'm not knocking that either, I'm glad these guys had fun, and I'm glad they thought it would be funny to put on a record. I'm just less inclined to play it for other people because of how weird that track is.

Yeah, I was just having a little fun using the word "sabotage" in the title, but if a certain aspect of the album keeps you from playing it as often as you otherwise would then it deserves a mention. I appreciate the little bit of effort put into the last few seconds of OFRS to set up the final track. Brian says, "Let's make one. You guys ready? Let's go."

Out of curiosity, how highly do you rank All Summer Long among your favorite BB albums? Would it be higher if it weren't for OFRS? Personally, All Summer Long has always been top 5 for me. Usually, either 3rd or 4th.

3) Smiley Smile: Okay, I'm only being half serious with this one, but "Good Vibrations" takes me out of this album! Production-wise, it's jarring. Simple as that. I've said before that GV is probably my most skipped BB song, and that's true. It's also one of my favorite BB songs. So, do I believe that Smiley Smile is worse off because of it? No.

Yes! I wonder if substituting the Lai'd In Hawaii version of Good Vibrations would temper that. I've never tried it though.

Good idea. I'll try that sometime.

Are there any albums that you feel are significantly let down by the inclusion of one song? Feel free to expand your answers to include any specific element of an album that bothers you.

1) Surfer Girl: This may still rate as a classic, all-time great album, but the inclusion of "South Bay Surfer" epically undermines its greatness. I like the underlying song, but the performance, arrangement, production, and sequence leave a lot to be desired. It's entirely out of place; whereas, the rest of the album is fantastic and cohesive. If it weren't for this blunder Surfer Girl would easily be among my top 10 favorite BB albums. Instead, it's #15.

2) Shut Down Vol. 2: This album could stand to lose 2-3 of its tracks. The disparity between the best and worst material does not make for an enjoyable listening experience. That said, sequencing "Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson" in the middle of Side 1 was a huge mistake. I had the same misgiving with "South Bay Surfer". In my opinion, if you are going to include an inferior song on an album you are best off hiding it in the middle of Side 2 and if you are going to include a talk track you are best off including it as the last track (that way it can be heard as a bonus/hidden track). The sequencing of "Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson" torpedoed the listening experience. It's a shame when you consider just how great 3/4 of this album is. I never listen to it from start to finish.

3) Smiley Smile: Okay, I'm only being half serious with this one, but "Good Vibrations" takes me out of this album! Production-wise, it's jarring. Simple as that. 4) Carl & the Passions - So Tough: I feel like this album is a bit underrated. Personally, I prefer it to Surf's Up. Unfortunately, it only has 8 songs. I love 7 of them. "Here She Comes" is not one of them. To make matters worse, for me, it's sequenced 2nd and is over 5 minutes long. Not ideal. The lead vocals are also mixed ridiculously low relative to the rest of the album (and most importantly the songs immediately preceding and following it). I don't hate the song, though. The fade out is awesome. Perhaps with a better mix, edit, and another Beach Boy sharing the lead with Ricky, I'd love it too.

5) Keepin' The Summer Alive - Mike's nasal lead vocals, and the production thereof, on "Some Of Your Love" and "Santa Ana Winds" really brings the album down for me. It's too bad, because I think it's actually a pretty good album, all things considered. "Santa Ana Winds" is especially frustrating because it was such an easy fix. Just have someone else sing his lead vocal line if he couldn't get it right. His bass vocal part is fantastic.

Anyhoo, didn't like the album. Zero favorites. It may be single such album by Paul. Can you say the same about any Beatle/ Paul?

My two least favorite Paul solo albums are Pipes Of Peace (1983) and Kisses On The Bottom (2012). I can't really say that I like either album nor are any of the songs a favorite of mine.

Anyhoo, since this thread isn't about favorites you listen to but *general* "what you listen to", here's album I listen to via kitchen radio (yes, it plays at times full albums) - New by Paul. Not sure why it's played few yrs after the fact but there you go. It's today's radio pick. I'm famously Paul fan but don't like few tracks they played. Maybe it improves with next tracks? Yay? Nay? Listening tbc. Btw, listened to New before but forgot what songs sound like, every single. Thus, the radio helps to refresh brains but it's like listening to it 1st time, really. As if previously I dreamed that I listened to it but in fact didn't. But I did listen, yet don't recall if liked it or disliked. Bizarre.

I'm not a huge fan of McCartney's New. Some fans rank it very highly among Paul's solo albums - I don't. That said, there are a few standout songs IMO. My favorite song is "New". Fantastic! I'm also a big fan of the hidden track "Scared". Beyond that, I like "Save Us", "On My Way To Work", and "Early Days" quite a bit.

"Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers their songs. He’s about to become a very big deal. From Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Richard Curtis, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and Notting Hill, comes a rock-n-roll comedy about music, dreams, friendship, and the long and winding road that leads to the love of your life."

Having recently acquired a decent turntable and speakers, and having had a curiosity about vinyl for a long time, I started buying some LPs. I have about a dozen now, and today's listening selection was James Taylor "Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon".

James Taylor was in top form in the early 70s. Sweet Baby James (1970), Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon (1971), and One Man Dog (1972) are all fantastic albums. I hadn't listened to JT in a while. Thanks for planting the suggestion.  Smiley

The funny thing is that in McCartney's interview from the fall, he doesn't say definitively that the original cut of the film as released to theaters will be re-released...yet the hints are along the lines of the original release was a "downer" so a new edit will be a more fun and happy version?

I'm lazy, so is there word alongside the news of Peter Jackson's work on the project that says the original version of Let It Be will be re-released? Or is it just that Jackson will be recutting a new version from the nearly 60 hours of existing footage?

Whatever the case, I'm confused about just what is coming out...and I hope they do re-release the original edit so people can see it. Wasn't it John or George or both of them who later said fans should see Let It Be so they could get an idea of how dreary and bad the scene really was by 1969 rather than trying to sugarcoat it?

They are definitely restoring and re-releasing the original film. That is why I'm so excited about this! No reservations. We get the best (hopefully) of both worlds. The only worry is that years down the road the new film could be prioritized and, therefore, outlast the original, but that is a risk worth taking. As you said, the original film has already been kept under wraps for nearly 40 years (last release was on VHS in '81) and it's not like it's a secret what's on it. People have still found a way to watch it and have read about it. So, the fact that it'll finally be released (presumably) on DVD and Blu-ray is huge. IMO that gives them the freedom to create a happier version (if that truly is what transpires), that won't necessarily be dishonest or sugarcoating. It's just another look, another perspective. The source material is the same. I think it's fair to suspect that the original film may not have been the most accurate representation of the overall mood. Regardless, we'll have both films to enjoy, analyze, and decide for ourselves. I can't wait!!!

Or will the "new" Beatles movie be made up exclusively of unreleased stuff?

I do not believe so.

Thanks, Rocker.

Edit: Just read..."following the arrival of Jackson’s new film, a restored version of Lindsay-Hogg’s Let It Be will also be released."

Don't know if any photos were taken but IIRC they did appear together onstage singing "Auld Lang Syne" during "New Year's Rockin' Eve" in late November 1974. Video footage exists, apparently.

Why yes it does exist...and here it is!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3ByPro4Jao

Too bad the Beach Boys aren't audible. I was hoping for another "O Come All Ye Faithful" moment.

What's just as interesting is that to my ears, I think you can hear on this specific track the cut-and-paste process of splicing tape and reusing the same "takes" for different sections of the same songs, as described by Jim Lockert in that famous quote where he spoke about the "marathon" mixing session which was done to finish the album.

My memory needs refreshing...could someone post or provide a link to Lockert's comments?

If anyone else is interested in reading them - I found a previous post by guitarfool2002, thanks!

But if they were able to add the Cottonfields single to the UK version of Sunflower, why not Break Away?  Both songs were Capital singles.

Hopefully, someone else will weigh in, because this is a murky area. Technically, I assume that the Beach Boys could have included "Break Away" on Sunflower, but that would have required licensing the song from Capitol. Similarly, they considered licensing "The Lord's Prayer" from Capitol for inclusion on Keepin' The Summer Alive. I assume this was the case for "Cottonfields" inclusion on the UK Sunflower. I wonder if this was made any easier considering EMI owned Capitol and Stateside ? I don't know. Like I said, this is a murky area for me. "Cottonfields" was included in other territories because it was an international hit and they thought its inclusion would result in greater sales.

Off the top of my head, other than Transcendental Meditation I cannot think of another "BBs" track that has all Brian harmonies, other than the unreleased Don't Talk intro. (I'm excluding tracks like Caroline, No, since it's just a lead vocal with no harmonies).

Is there another example I'm missing?

The first one that pops in my head is "The Surfer Moon".

I did not realize that was a Wall of Brians, very cool, I'll have to relisten!

Not a 'wall' per se, but he does sing harmony (unlike "Caroline, No"). Beautifully sung!

Edit: "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" is, what, like 90% Brian? Maybe more.
